LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson may be in the midst of fall scrimmages at the moment, but that doesn’t mean he cannot be working on the 2028 season.

Johnson just flipped the No. 2 catcher in the nation and No. 32 overall prospect by Perfect Game for the Class of 2027 in Caden Borcherding of Etowah High in Woodstock, Georgia. Borcherding (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) had been committed to Clemson since September of last year. If he does not decide to go pro, depending on where he is picked in the 2027 Major League Baseball Draft, Borcherding would play for LSU in 2028.

Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina are among the programs recruiting Borcherding in addition to Clemson and LSU.

Johnson was conducting intra-squad scrimmages with the Tigers from Oct. 8-18. The Tigers will scrimmage Samford on Saturday, October 31, at 3 p.m. at Keesler Federal Park in Biloxi and play there again on Nov. 1 against Samford.

LSU will host Troy on Nov. 8 at Alex Box Stadium at 1 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 13 at a time to be announced.
