I think so. Um, you know, I feel like I’ve been in his head a lot thinking about him and trying to think about why

he does the things that he does. And so I I think that I got maybe farther than others have. Um but I’ll also I’ll give

you the caveat of I mean there are people who have been around him a lot who and you know one of them I even quoted in the book who essentially said

like it’s impossible to fully know this guy, right? Like he’s in some ways unknowable just kind of how he acts and how he can be guarded and all these

different things. So, um, he he’s a tricky guy in that regard. But I do feel like just from kind of having his whole

life played out for me by talking to all these different people all along the way that I can at least understand him much

better than I did before and can, you know, have a better sense as to how his, you know, early years and everything else have shaped him into the person he

Well, well, that’s good because that sort of segus to my next question. Your subtitle calls him Kein, college football’s agent of chaos. Do do you

think he creates the chaos strategically or or do you think he creates it compulsively and then uses his intelligence to escape it?

I think it’s all the above, honestly. I I think there are times where it’s strategic and there’s other things that it’s just this innate thing in him that

he seeks out and he’s had it for a lot of his life. I think that normal can

feel boring to him and stable can feel boring to him and there’s you know some um adrenaline seeking behavior that he

it’s something that is a big part of his life and it’s not all bad chaos some of it is good chaos but there’s no question

that he has more of it um and seeks out more of it and chases more of it than your average college football coach. And I think to your latter point, there is

some of that where it spins a bit out of control and he has to figure out how do I get myself out of this one? And he has

some very smart people around him who help with that, including his agent. But there are these times where he’s so used to, I think, kind of getting his way and

being able to outsmart and outthink people to kind of even when it’s chaotic to find a way to win. And those rare times he can’t, I think it’s, you know, it’s hard for him. Well, you kind of

were uh involved, if I remember correctly, in some of that that chaos.

They towards the end of the book, they like I think it was in June, they invited you to a meeting and all of a sudden some big guns showed up at the table that shocked you or surprised you.

Yeah. I mean, that was certainly um a surprising interaction. And the thing that was with Lane that like this is kind of you know what I was saying

earlier. I feel like I I was in his head a little bit and trying to be [clears throat] in his head because like Lane will say things or do things and like it’s not always quite clear like

what the intention behind it is. There’s a crypticness to some of his interactions. And so even just texting with him, you’re like, “What am I

supposed to take away from this?” Like what what did you mean by that? What’s happening here? And so there was some kind of

funny um and strange I guess you know interactions in that regard but also just you know all right we’re going to

meet and I think it’s just the two of us meeting. We’re going to talk things out.

I was thinking all right we’re going to do an interview and then it’s like well Jimmy said this meaning his agent. It’s like okay is Jimmy going to be involved in this meeting too? I didn’t know that.

And then I show up and there’s another person at the meeting that was never mentioned. It’s like okay now it’s threeon one. like what did I walk into here? And it was it was a perfectly fine

conversation. Um at tense intense at times, but you know, it wasn’t uh anything that I couldn’t necessarily

handle, but it was just more of like it it catches you off guard and there’s just always this aspect of Lane where it feels like he’s playing chess against

you. Like he’s always kind of thinking a couple moves ahead. And so you have to kind of read between the lines and like what is he really saying? What does he

really mean by that for even just what he’s saying in this moment?

and listen, I’ll be very, you know, candid, like I, you know, reached out to Lane before I started the book. Like Harper Collins is the publisher of the

book. Like re, you know, they wanted me to do it. They offered me a contract. I reached out to Lane and was like, “Hey, Harper wants me to do this. You know,

I’m about to take on this project. Would love to talk to you if you’re interested. I want you to hear it from me first.” So, before I ever reached out

to anybody, he knew um what I was trying to do. And you know, he sent me kind of a piffy, funny response text right away,

which didn’t shock me. And and then I reached out a couple times to try to figure out, hey, do you want to talk? Do you not want to talk? And like ultimately, even though we had meetings,

we exchanged texts, things like that, he did not sit down for an interview. And so he didn’t get to tell maybe some of

his side of some of these stories, but I think, you know, when you talk to as many people as I did and really tried to

find people, you know, who love Lane u and can speak very positively about Lane in addition to, of course, some people who Lane, you know, who probably don’t

like Lane and to balance it all out. So, I tried to get as much of a a balance there as I could. Um, but like you know

there’s certain stuff in Lane’s past that I I I think he probably doesn’t want necessarily the whole world to to read about, but that’s also part of his story and part of his experience.

I did, but I talked to a lot of people who are are friends of Chris’s and love Chris. And it’s kind of interesting, Glenn, even you know, being back in

Oxford this past weekend. You know, I was around Miss Boosters, people at Miss University, you know, just I was in town

for days, so I was just around a lot of people. And you will not hear a single person say anything negative about Chris

Kein. That’s a guy who’s still very well thought of. Now, did all those people have as many nice things to say about

his older brother? No, they did not. But Chris Gin seems to be, you know, kind of safe from all that. And I think just because of how good of a guy he is and

and how caring he is and all that. So throughout the process, I was able to talk to, you know, some of Chris’s friends and and just try to get his, you

know, kind of how has he talked about it? What’s it like to be the younger brother of OA Keifin and the son of Ammani Kein to try to get that, you

know, perspective. Were Were you able to work on the book before uh his father Monty passed away a couple years ago?

I didn’t um I mean I I had the idea before he did but I was not like actively working on the book at that

point. So you know the that’s a challenge right? So where what you try to do at least what I tried to do and unfortunately like and Lane talked about

this publicly like you know the last few years of Monty’s life you know he had dementia and so there were times where I was you know around Monty and interacted

with him he’s nice guy um but you know at that point might have been too late even if I wanted to. So, you know, what

I tried to do was, you know, one, it helps that Monty Keifin was a public figure. So, he’s done interviews over the years that that help that gives you

kind of a baseline of things to work with. And then I talked to a lot of Monty’s friends and former colleagues, uh, you know, one of them, Rick Mter,

who’s the son who’s the father of current, you know, Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Mentor. Like Rick and Monty work together NC State and Arkansas. And

so, you know, he gives a perspective and I I talked to a lot of guys who got, you know, either worked with him at Arkansas when he was Lou Holtz’s defensive

coordinator at Nebraska, when he was defensive coordinator there, or then when he was the head coach at NC State.

So, I thought that I got a pretty good feel for who Monty was. And he was just talking to people like how did Monty talk about his son? Like, what did he say about Lane? What did he love about

Lane? You know, what did he think maybe were some things that Lane needed help with? And so I got those perspectives, you know, through some of the people um

that he was close with until the day he died.

want in the book or people to know about some of the things he’s done in this past, but he’s sober now. He’s been sober since supposedly 2021. He’s older.

He he seems to be more attentive to his daughters, his family, his son.

Did anything in your reporting convince you he has genuinely changed? Um or has he is it merely better managed now?

Well, I think all those things that you just mentioned are changes that he made.

Um and people, you know, in Oxford and around Miss will tell you that, you know, him becoming sober made him a lot more clear-headed and a better person in

a lot of different ways. You know, getting his family back uh in the same town as him. you know, people at FAU would told me like how badly he missed

his family, um that he was not able to be a full-time parent. So, having them back in his life, I think was huge for

him. And I think he has tried to change and evolve. Um but from what you know, you guys were asking about earlier, like there’s always going to be that chaos.

And so, I think you can be sober. I think you can be more attentive as a father. I think you can be more mature in a variety of ways, but I also think

that chaos is always going to be there and it’s going to lead to moments where um you know people might scratch their heads a little bit like why did this happen or why does he do this or

whatever it might be. So you have to accept that as part of the Lane Keifin experience, but I do think that LSU is getting or has gotten the best version of Lane Keifin yet.
