Madison Prep’s Jones wins Tiger Rag/OLOL Children’s Health Shining Star of the Week

St. James may not have gotten the full effect of Madison Prep’s David Jones, but they certainly saw enough of the junior jack-of-all trades.

With the two teams locked in a competitive Nos. 8 vs. 9 battle to advance in the Class 3A state playoffs, it was Jones who helped provide the Chargers needed separation to take another step toward their state title defense.

Jones, who wasn’t called upon at running back, was a major force on defense and special teams for Madison Prep in a 33-10 victory over St. James.

For his efforts Jones was selected the Tiger Rag Magazine/Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health Shining Star of the Week.

“He had an impact pretty much in all phases of the game,” Madison Prep head football coach Landry Williams. “You could see the ability. He had the team motivated and rallied behind him. We used that to score touchdowns and played lights out on defense.”

Jones led Madison Prep with nine tackles from his corner back spot and was also part of the Chargers’ coverage on St. James standout wide receiver Shazz Preston.

With St. James driving into Madison Prep territory, Jones came up with a key interception that turned away the Wildcats. He was also pivotal on special teams with four punt returns for 96 yards and two kickoff returns for 90 yards, the latter helping to set up his team’s go-ahead touchdown after a long return to St. James’ 20-yard line.

“David’s done that all the time and we’ve gotten used to it around here,” Williams said. “He’s an amazing guy and it’s great to have him on your team. We love the way David plays and we continue to use the momentum he brings in the playoffs.”
