The biggest beating in Dabo Swinney’s head coaching career at Clemson, 51-10, at LSU on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium moved LSU (1-0) to No. 8 from No. 11 in the first in-season Associated Press college football poll of the year on Tuesday.
LSU’s 41-point victory, which could have been worse, beat Swinney’s previous most lopsided loss, which was by 37 points to Florida State, 51-14, in 2013 and again by 37 to West Virginia, 70-33, on Jan. 4, 2012, in the Orange Bowl.
LSU’s rolled up 644 yards of offense, including 309 on the ground, and led 31-3 at halftime in new coach Lane Kiffin’s debut.
The Tigers next play on Saturday against Louisiana Tech (1-0), which also knows how to score as it beat Northwestern State, 80-6, on Saturday. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.
The rest of the top 10 had Ohio State at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Oregon, No. 7 Miami, No. 9 Ole Miss, which hosts LSU on Sept 19 (6:30 p.m., ABC), and No. 10 Texas A&M, which will be at LSU on Sept. 26.
The second 10 saw No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 12 Alabama, No. 13 Texas Tech, No. 14 USC, No. 15 BYU, No. 16 Penn State, No. 17 SMU, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 19 Washington and No. 20 Utah. The bottom five featured No 21 Iowa, No. 22 Houston, No. 23 Missouri, No. 24 Louisville and No. 25 Virginia.
Michigan, which was fortunate to get another second on the clock to beat 27-point underdog Western Michigan, 13-12, dropped from No. 16 and completely out of the poll in the biggest drop since 2008.
