When LSU football coach Lane Kiffin said on Thursday that Saturday’s night’s season opener was “going to be electric,” he didn’t mean it literally.
But there were lightning strikes not far from Tiger Stadium after 5 p.m., and game officials announced a lightning delay of 90 minutes at 5:40 p.m., pushing the start of the game between No. 11 LSU and No. 23 Clemson back from the original kickoff of 6:49 p.m. The earliest the new start would therefore be 7:10 p.m.
But that didn’t look likely as immediately after the announcement, hard rain fell at 5:43 p.m., scattering several hundred fans in the stadium to take cover. Then another bolt of lightning struck a minute later.

“Kickoff will be later than expected,” the Tiger Stadium public address announcer stated, and within a few minutes they were playing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1970 hit, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain,” written by CCR lead singer John Fogerty.
Rain was expected to continue on and off through about 8 p.m.
Come hell or high water and lightning, Kiffin is expected to make his LSU coaching debut at some time tonight after the six previous seasons at Ole Miss.
