LSU defensive tackle Deuce Geralds was named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week after recording two sacks and five tackles in the Tigers’ 35-6 win over Texas A&M. Geralds is the first non-quarterback to win the honor this season. Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon was named Freshman of the Week the first two weeks and Vanderbilt’s Jared Curtis got the nod last week.
Geralds, a four-star recruit out of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia, has been a standout for the Tigers since he arrived in Baton Rouge. The 18-year-old has started the first four games of his career and racked up four sacks, 13 total tackles and one forced fumble. His other two sacks both came against Louisiana Tech.
“Deuce has done great, obviously, as a true freshman,” Kiffin said after Saturday’s win. “There aren’t many stories like that out there anymore because if you think about it, everyone’s portalized, right? So there’s not many spots that aren’t filled where a lot of times sometimes you got to go to true freshmen to play them, and you see less and less of that around the country. So Deuce is really unique, done a great job.”
Geralds helped the defense shut down the Aggies and quarterback Marcel Reed. The Tigers allowed just 197 yards of offense and 11 first downs and forced two interceptions. Reed finished the game with -13 rushing yards after gashing LSU on the ground each of the last two seasons. The Aggies had just 97 yards rushing as a team and averaged 2.8 yards per carry.
