Since becoming the first pick of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers out of LSU in 2016, guard Ben Simmons has missed three complete seasons for injuries or mental health – 2016-17 and 2021-22 with Philly and 2025-26 while not on an NBA team.
He joined the Sacramento Kings just last September and appeared on his way to playing in the 2026-27 season. Simmons scored 14 points with eight rebounds and seven assists on Friday in a 126-97 exhibition loss at San Antonio. But on Sunday, Simmons tore his right Achilles in practice. It will require surgery, and he is expected to miss the fourth season of his NBA career, according to ESPN.
The three-time All-Star took 2025-26 off “to get away and have some space and just find myself,” he told Men’s Health magazine over the summer. In recent years, he has become interested in deep-sea fishing, according to The Athletic. He likely will have more time for that now.
Through a possible 10 NBA seasons before this coming season, Simmons has played fewer than 59 games in a regular season eight times. The only time he played the full 81-game regular season was in his first season in 2017-18. He was a three-time All-Star from 2019-21.
Simmon’s career three-point shooting percentage is .139, and he is a 59 percent shooter from the free throw line.
