Lane Kiffin will be in the building … and so will media members!

“LSU Coach Lane Kiffin – Media Opportunity,” shouted the headline in the LSU athletic department email at 5:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

“LSU coach Lane Kiffin will meet with members of the media tomorrow (Feb. 4) at 2 p.m. in the Team Room at Football Ops (Operations). Coach Kiffin will discuss LSU’s Transfer Portal class, high school signees, new coaches on staff, etc.,” the release said.

It will be Kiffin’s first public appearance at LSU – other than daily and sometimes hourly tweets – since Dec. 1 when he was introduced as the Tigers’ new coach in the suites at Tiger Stadium. That was one day after arriving on campus as coach following six seasons as Ole Miss’ head coach.

Kiffin was later interviewed during LSU’s 38-35 loss to Houston in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 27 on ESPN.

And he spoke on Jan. 20 at the Leadership Power Breakfast at the Hilton Capitol Center in Baton Rouge. And that has been it … until now.

In between those appearances, he put together probably the greatest NCAA Transfer Portal signing class with 41 additions to the roster and hired a top flight coaching staff as well as personnel experts.

So, press conferences may be overrated. I always felt former LSU coach Les Miles did too many of them. For one season, he spoke after the Saturday game, again on Sunday, at his usual press conference on Monday, again on Wednesday on the SEC teleconference and after practice during the week.

So did former LSU coach Gerry DiNardo. In the past, the feeling was the head coach needed to educate the media. That didn’t always work, particularly when they were losing. And sometimes they backfired, such as when Miles tried to explain the Jan. 9, 2012, loss to Alabama by 21-0 in the national championship game two days later in a press conference. Not a good call by whoever made that call, and it wasn’t Miles.

For many years, the LSU football coach did more press conferences than the governor of Louisiana.

Perhaps, less frequent press conferences are better for the football coach at LSU. It might be best just to let the coach work.

So far, so good with Kiffin, who never appears to not be working or tweeting.

So, enjoy today’s press conference that Tiger Rag will cover as if it is a SEC football game.

Because we might not see Kiffin in another one until the 2026 season starts.
