John Talty, a CBS Sports college football writer and the author of “Lane Being Lane” – a biography on LSU coach Lane Kiffin, details his experience researching Kiffin and writing the book. He recaps the environment and reception that awaited Kiffin at Ole Miss and gives some insight into how he’s matured as a coach and a person.

Dave Wilson covers Texas A&M and Texas for ESPN and joins the show to break down the must-win matchup between the No. 23 Aggies (2-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) and No. 10 Tigers (2-1, 0-1) on Saturday.

Chapter 2: Interview with John Talty

1:00

1 minute

All right, welcome back to Tiger Rag Radio as we begin hour number two. Dave Wilson, who covers Texas A&M for ESPN,

1:07

1 minute, 7 seconds

he will join us coming up later on this hour to preview what could be an elimination game when you look at the college football playoff between uh LSU and Texas A&M coming up this Saturday.

1:18

1 minute, 18 seconds

Maybe not an elimination game, but it certainly feels mustwin uh for the month of September. big game last week. Of

1:26

1 minute, 26 seconds

course, LSU Miss Tigers come up a little short. And there was also a new book that came out um last week written by

1:35

1 minute, 35 seconds

John Talty, a bio who wrote a biography on Lane Kein. It’s called Lane being Lane. John is also a college football

1:42

1 minute, 42 seconds

reporter for CBS Sports and he joins us now here on Tiger Rag Radio. John, how you doing tonight?

1:50

1 minute, 50 seconds

Great. Appreciate you guys having me on.

1:51

1 minute, 51 seconds

Well, it’s great to have you on. you were at the game covering it on Saturday and you have such an interesting perspective on this considering you just

1:58

1 minute, 58 seconds

wrote a book on Lane Keifin. So watching the drama unfold in the game on Saturday night, knowing what you know about Lane,

2:06

2 minutes, 6 seconds

what were some of the main thoughts going through your head and maybe what he was thinking as especially as far as

2:13

2 minutes, 13 seconds

uh when it came to the reception that he was receiving from the Old Miss fan base. Yeah, there’s just such an interesting environment and it’s

2:21

2 minutes, 21 seconds

something that I think is like why we love college sports because like that just doesn’t happen at the NFL level. Um that level of reaction is just something that’s so perfectly SEC in every way.

2:32

2 minutes, 32 seconds

And you know what I thought was interesting and you know I know Glenn you were there so I’m curious your take on it but like it felt like he was

2:40

2 minutes, 40 seconds

trying so hard to control his emotions that he almost felt flat in the first half like he was felt low energy in some

2:48

2 minutes, 48 seconds

ways and I wonder if maybe he turned the dial down a little bit too far because he didn’t want to be caught up by the

2:57

2 minutes, 57 seconds

emotions of it all and having you know 70,000 fans saying f Wayne Gippin like he was trying to seemingly control

3:04

3 minutes, 4 seconds

himself and it just felt like he you know was a little off a little out of rhythm. They just did not seem great in the first half and it felt like second

3:12

3 minutes, 12 seconds

half he was getting his mojo back and it felt like you more of the lane tiffen that we kind of expect on the sideline.

3:18

3 minutes, 18 seconds

So, I thought that was kind of an interesting impact and, you know, angle to the game, but there’s just not many

3:25

3 minutes, 25 seconds

games that I’ve been to that just had kind of all the drama and storylines the way that that one did on Saturday.

3:33

3 minutes, 33 seconds

Hey, John, this is this is Todd. Do I mean and this may sound like a weird question, but do do you feel like after

3:41

3 minutes, 41 seconds

spending the time covering him all these years and then doing all the reporting for Lane after Lane being Lane and

3:48

3 minutes, 48 seconds

writing this book, do you feel like you know him?

3:52

3 minutes, 52 seconds

I think so. Um, you know, I feel like I’ve been in his head a lot thinking about him and trying to think about why

3:59

3 minutes, 59 seconds

he does the things that he does. And so I I think that I got maybe farther than others have. Um but I’ll also I’ll give

4:08

4 minutes, 8 seconds

you the caveat of I mean there are people who have been around him a lot who and you know one of them I even quoted in the book who essentially said

4:16

4 minutes, 16 seconds

like it’s impossible to fully know this guy, right? Like he’s in some ways unknowable just kind of how he acts and how he can be guarded and all these

4:24

4 minutes, 24 seconds

different things. So, um, he he’s a tricky guy in that regard. But I do feel like just from kind of having his whole

4:32

4 minutes, 32 seconds

life played out for me by talking to all these different people all along the way that I can at least understand him much

4:40

4 minutes, 40 seconds

better than I did before and can, you know, have a better sense as to how his, you know, early years and everything else have shaped him into the person he

4:48

4 minutes, 48 seconds

is and in part why he reacts the way he does to certain things.

4:52

4 minutes, 52 seconds

Well, well, that’s good because that sort of segus to my next question. Your subtitle calls him Kein, college football’s agent of chaos. Do do you

5:00

5 minutes

think he creates the chaos strategically or or do you think he creates it compulsively and then uses his intelligence to escape it?

5:09

5 minutes, 9 seconds

I think it’s all the above, honestly. I I think there are times where it’s strategic and there’s other things that it’s just this innate thing in him that

5:19

5 minutes, 19 seconds

he seeks out and he’s had it for a lot of his life. I think that normal can

5:26

5 minutes, 26 seconds

feel boring to him and stable can feel boring to him and there’s you know some um adrenaline seeking behavior that he

5:35

5 minutes, 35 seconds

has and some you know things that really take his attention but I I think overall

5:43

5 minutes, 43 seconds

it’s something that is a big part of his life and it’s not all bad chaos some of it is good chaos but there’s no question

5:49

5 minutes, 49 seconds

that he has more of it um and seeks out more of it and chases more of it than your average college football coach. And I think to your latter point, there is

5:58

5 minutes, 58 seconds

some of that where it spins a bit out of control and he has to figure out how do I get myself out of this one? And he has

6:06

6 minutes, 6 seconds

some very smart people around him who help with that, including his agent. But there are these times where he’s so used to, I think, kind of getting his way and

6:14

6 minutes, 14 seconds

being able to outsmart and outthink people to kind of even when it’s chaotic to find a way to win. And those rare times he can’t, I think it’s, you know, it’s hard for him. Well, you kind of

6:23

6 minutes, 23 seconds

were uh involved, if I remember correctly, in some of that that chaos.

6:28

6 minutes, 28 seconds

They towards the end of the book, they like I think it was in June, they invited you to a meeting and all of a sudden some big guns showed up at the table that shocked you or surprised you.

6:37

6 minutes, 37 seconds

Yeah. I mean, that was certainly um a surprising interaction. And the thing that was with Lane that like this is kind of you know what I was saying

6:46

6 minutes, 46 seconds

earlier. I feel like I I was in his head a little bit and trying to be [clears throat] in his head because like Lane will say things or do things and like it’s not always quite clear like

6:55

6 minutes, 55 seconds

what the intention behind it is. There’s a crypticness to some of his interactions. And so even just texting with him, you’re like, “What am I

7:02

7 minutes, 2 seconds

supposed to take away from this?” Like what what did you mean by that? What’s happening here? And so there was some kind of

7:09

7 minutes, 9 seconds

funny um and strange I guess you know interactions in that regard but also just you know all right we’re going to

7:17

7 minutes, 17 seconds

meet and I think it’s just the two of us meeting. We’re going to talk things out.

7:20

7 minutes, 20 seconds

I was thinking all right we’re going to do an interview and then it’s like well Jimmy said this meaning his agent. It’s like okay is Jimmy going to be involved in this meeting too? I didn’t know that.

7:29

7 minutes, 29 seconds

And then I show up and there’s another person at the meeting that was never mentioned. It’s like okay now it’s threeon one. like what did I walk into here? And it was it was a perfectly fine

7:38

7 minutes, 38 seconds

conversation. Um at tense intense at times, but you know, it wasn’t uh anything that I couldn’t necessarily

7:45

7 minutes, 45 seconds

handle, but it was just more of like it it catches you off guard and there’s just always this aspect of Lane where it feels like he’s playing chess against

7:54

7 minutes, 54 seconds

you. Like he’s always kind of thinking a couple moves ahead. And so you have to kind of read between the lines and like what is he really saying? What does he

8:01

8 minutes, 1 second

really mean by that for even just what he’s saying in this moment?

8:05

8 minutes, 5 seconds

Was there anything in the book that he wanted you to remove?

8:09

8 minutes, 9 seconds

Uh I mean it just wasn’t really that kind of dynamic. Um now like do I think there are things in there that he might

8:16

8 minutes, 16 seconds

like for me to re remove? Sure. But I think that right well that’s part of it. Um, and

8:24

8 minutes, 24 seconds

and listen, I’ll be very, you know, candid, like I, you know, reached out to Lane before I started the book. Like Harper Collins is the publisher of the

8:32

8 minutes, 32 seconds

book. Like re, you know, they wanted me to do it. They offered me a contract. I reached out to Lane and was like, “Hey, Harper wants me to do this. You know,

8:40

8 minutes, 40 seconds

I’m about to take on this project. Would love to talk to you if you’re interested. I want you to hear it from me first.” So, before I ever reached out

8:47

8 minutes, 47 seconds

to anybody, he knew um what I was trying to do. And you know, he sent me kind of a piffy, funny response text right away,

8:55

8 minutes, 55 seconds

which didn’t shock me. And and then I reached out a couple times to try to figure out, hey, do you want to talk? Do you not want to talk? And like ultimately, even though we had meetings,

9:03

9 minutes, 3 seconds

we exchanged texts, things like that, he did not sit down for an interview. And so he didn’t get to tell maybe some of

9:10

9 minutes, 10 seconds

his side of some of these stories, but I think, you know, when you talk to as many people as I did and really tried to

9:17

9 minutes, 17 seconds

find people, you know, who love Lane u and can speak very positively about Lane in addition to, of course, some people who Lane, you know, who probably don’t

9:26

9 minutes, 26 seconds

like Lane and to balance it all out. So, I tried to get as much of a a balance there as I could. Um, but like you know

9:36

9 minutes, 36 seconds

there’s certain stuff in Lane’s past that I I I think he probably doesn’t want necessarily the whole world to to read about, but that’s also part of his story and part of his experience.

9:45

9 minutes, 45 seconds

Talking to John Toly, author of uh Lane being Lane. John, um, did you talk to Chris Keifin much, his brother for the book?

9:55

9 minutes, 55 seconds

I did, but I talked to a lot of people who are are friends of Chris’s and love Chris. And it’s kind of interesting, Glenn, even you know, being back in

10:03

10 minutes, 3 seconds

Oxford this past weekend. You know, I was around Miss Boosters, people at Miss University, you know, just I was in town

10:11

10 minutes, 11 seconds

for days, so I was just around a lot of people. And you will not hear a single person say anything negative about Chris

10:18

10 minutes, 18 seconds

Kein. That’s a guy who’s still very well thought of. Now, did all those people have as many nice things to say about

10:26

10 minutes, 26 seconds

his older brother? No, they did not. But Chris Gin seems to be, you know, kind of safe from all that. And I think just because of how good of a guy he is and

10:35

10 minutes, 35 seconds

and how caring he is and all that. So throughout the process, I was able to talk to, you know, some of Chris’s friends and and just try to get his, you

10:43

10 minutes, 43 seconds

know, kind of how has he talked about it? What’s it like to be the younger brother of OA Keifin and the son of Ammani Kein to try to get that, you

10:50

10 minutes, 50 seconds

know, perspective. Were Were you able to work on the book before uh his father Monty passed away a couple years ago?

10:59

10 minutes, 59 seconds

I didn’t um I mean I I had the idea before he did but I was not like actively working on the book at that

11:07

11 minutes, 7 seconds

point. So you know the that’s a challenge right? So where what you try to do at least what I tried to do and unfortunately like and Lane talked about

11:15

11 minutes, 15 seconds

this publicly like you know the last few years of Monty’s life you know he had dementia and so there were times where I was you know around Monty and interacted

11:23

11 minutes, 23 seconds

with him he’s nice guy um but you know at that point might have been too late even if I wanted to. So, you know, what

11:30

11 minutes, 30 seconds

I tried to do was, you know, one, it helps that Monty Keifin was a public figure. So, he’s done interviews over the years that that help that gives you

11:38

11 minutes, 38 seconds

kind of a baseline of things to work with. And then I talked to a lot of Monty’s friends and former colleagues, uh, you know, one of them, Rick Mter,

11:47

11 minutes, 47 seconds

who’s the son who’s the father of current, you know, Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Mentor. Like Rick and Monty work together NC State and Arkansas. And

11:56

11 minutes, 56 seconds

so, you know, he gives a perspective and I I talked to a lot of guys who got, you know, either worked with him at Arkansas when he was Lou Holtz’s defensive

12:03

12 minutes, 3 seconds

coordinator at Nebraska, when he was defensive coordinator there, or then when he was the head coach at NC State.

12:09

12 minutes, 9 seconds

So, I thought that I got a pretty good feel for who Monty was. And he was just talking to people like how did Monty talk about his son? Like, what did he say about Lane? What did he love about

12:17

12 minutes, 17 seconds

Lane? You know, what did he think maybe were some things that Lane needed help with? And so I got those perspectives, you know, through some of the people um

12:25

12 minutes, 25 seconds

that he was close with until the day he died.

12:27

12 minutes, 27 seconds

Hey, John, we’re we’re I think we got about a minute left, but um obviously you talked about a lot of the things that Lane would not necessarily probably

12:35

12 minutes, 35 seconds

want in the book or people to know about some of the things he’s done in this past, but he’s sober now. He’s been sober since supposedly 2021. He’s older.

12:45

12 minutes, 45 seconds

He he seems to be more attentive to his daughters, his family, his son.

12:50

12 minutes, 50 seconds

Did anything in your reporting convince you he has genuinely changed? Um or has he is it merely better managed now?

13:00

13 minutes

Well, I think all those things that you just mentioned are changes that he made.

13:04

13 minutes, 4 seconds

Um and people, you know, in Oxford and around Miss will tell you that, you know, him becoming sober made him a lot more clear-headed and a better person in

13:13

13 minutes, 13 seconds

a lot of different ways. You know, getting his family back uh in the same town as him. you know, people at FAU would told me like how badly he missed

13:21

13 minutes, 21 seconds

his family, um that he was not able to be a full-time parent. So, having them back in his life, I think was huge for

13:28

13 minutes, 28 seconds

him. And I think he has tried to change and evolve. Um but from what you know, you guys were asking about earlier, like there’s always going to be that chaos.

13:38

13 minutes, 38 seconds

And so, I think you can be sober. I think you can be more attentive as a father. I think you can be more mature in a variety of ways, but I also think

13:46

13 minutes, 46 seconds

that chaos is always going to be there and it’s going to lead to moments where um you know people might scratch their heads a little bit like why did this happen or why does he do this or

13:54

13 minutes, 54 seconds

whatever it might be. So you have to accept that as part of the Lane Keifin experience, but I do think that LSU is getting or has gotten the best version of Lane Keifin yet.

14:05

14 minutes, 5 seconds

Is this his last destination? Is this the destination for No, I didn’t ask you, did [laughter] I?

14:12

14 minutes, 12 seconds

I mean, if you look at his track record, no. And I’ll just go back to what I said earlier. Like, I do think when it starts feeling really stable is when he gets a

14:21

14 minutes, 21 seconds

little antsy. And so, I don’t know what that looks like. Like, I think I’m sure like fans would love, hey, I hope he wins multiple national championships.

14:28

14 minutes, 28 seconds

Like, and if he does do that, does he get that NFL itch? Does he need some new challenge? I think he needs something to continue to challenge him. And when he

14:36

14 minutes, 36 seconds

feels like he’s kind of done it all, it’s that’s when he gets bored. But I think it’s what happened at Miss, frankly. And so if there’s something that keeps challenging him, then maybe

14:44

14 minutes, 44 seconds

he stays for a while. But you’re looking at typically that five, six years, right? And then he might be looking to move. So be interesting to see what he can do um in that time frame.

14:53

14 minutes, 53 seconds

Dallas Cowboys, John. Dallas Cowboys.

14:56

14 minutes, 56 seconds

Jerry Jones and Lane. A match made in heaven right there. There you go.

15:00

15 minutes

Sounds like it. John, thanks a lot for your time. Congratulations on the book Lane being Lane. and enjoy your coverage of college football on CBSports.com and we’ll have to have you back on again.

15:09

15 minutes, 9 seconds

Thank you very much for your time tonight. Thanks. Appreciate it, guys.

15:13

15 minutes, 13 seconds

All right, John Talty joining us here on Tiger Rag Radio. We’re going to have another uh guest on from the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, or at least I think that’s the plan. So, we’ll do that

15:21

15 minutes, 21 seconds

and then we’ll get you a scouting report on Texas A&M. So, stay tuned here on Tiger Rag Radio.

[music]

15:57

15 minutes, 57 seconds

And we’re back with Tiger Rag Radio.

16:03

16 minutes, 3 seconds

back here on Tiger Rag Radio. Jeff Polalmo along with Todd Horn, Gwen Gilbo, Case Kishnik. As we uh said

16:11

16 minutes, 11 seconds

earlier in the show, last week we were over at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library on Goodwood Boulevard, the main library, and we had a power outage and

16:19

16 minutes, 19 seconds

we couldn’t get on all the guests from the library that we wanted to. So, uh we’re doing it tonight or at least getting a couple on that we didn’t weren’t able to get to last week. And

16:28

16 minutes, 28 seconds

one of them is Brandon Riley who joins us now here on Tiger Rag Radio. Brandon, how you doing? I’m doing great. How you doing, John?

16:36

16 minutes, 36 seconds

I am doing well. Good hearing from you.

16:38

16 minutes, 38 seconds

Uh, sorry we could not connect last week, but uh, glad you’re on our airwaves tonight. Tell us about the MakerFair that the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System has going on.

16:49

16 minutes, 49 seconds

Oh, I’m super excited about it. This is the third one that I’ve been over and I think our 13th one that we’ve held. Um, it’s coming up on October 17th from 10 to 4:00 p.m.

17:01

17 minutes, 1 second

This year is medieval themed. So, uh, we’re going to have Trey Buché out there. We’re going to have, you know,

17:09

17 minutes, 9 seconds

the Europeans, they have the the Beu tapestry. We have the Bayou Tap. We’re going to have that on display. Uh we’re

17:17

17 minutes, 17 seconds

having soap making, me making, chain mail making, uh stained glass exhibits, fire breathing, medieval music, and

17:26

17 minutes, 26 seconds

that’s just a partial list of everything we’re going to do. Uh that that Saturday, October 17th.

17:32

17 minutes, 32 seconds

So, Saturday, October 17th, and I would imagine this is going to be at the main library on Goodwood Boulevard. It’s going to be at the main library.

17:40

17 minutes, 40 seconds

We’re taking over the first and second floors. We’re going to be outside in our large meeting room and we’re taking over the nearby field for our trebuchets.

17:49

17 minutes, 49 seconds

[laughter]

17:51

17 minutes, 51 seconds

If you don’t know what a trabushet is, what is it? I’m sorry.

17:54

17 minutes, 54 seconds

It’s a catapult. It’s a medieval catapult. So, uh, we’re going to be launching things from it.

18:00

18 minutes

Wow. Okay. Pretty cool there. What time does it all start? Uh, Brandon, and when did you, uh, start doing this? Um, and just, uh, what kind of attendance do you get normally for it?

18:11

18 minutes, 11 seconds

Oh. Uh, last year we had over 4,000 people attending. We usually have between three and four. Uh, it’s a huge

18:18

18 minutes, 18 seconds

event. It’s one of our, uh, capstone events for the year. Um, and we just, we have tremendous, uh, participation for

18:25

18 minutes, 25 seconds

it. It’s a family learning, a family-friendly opportunity. It promotes lifelong learning. Uh, it focuses on

18:33

18 minutes, 33 seconds

technology and making, tinkering, inventing, and we just, we’re just super excited about it this year.

18:40

18 minutes, 40 seconds

Okay. All right. So, for those that are going to uh uh go to this or thinking about going to this, is this something you got to dress up for or and what are

18:48

18 minutes, 48 seconds

some of the you you mentioned you’re going to be launching stuff, but [laughter] what are some of the other different activities that are going to be ongoing?

18:57

18 minutes, 57 seconds

Well, of course, we got the catapulting, we got the maple, we’ve got wreath making, uh soap making. Uh you’re going to learn how to make your own soap.

19:06

19 minutes, 6 seconds

There’s a seminar for making uh chain mail, like chain mail armor. You know, you ever get attacked by a grizzly or shark, you want to have your chain mail

19:14

19 minutes, 14 seconds

uh handy for that. We’re going to have a seminar where people can learn how to make their own illuminated manuscripts.

19:21

19 minutes, 21 seconds

Uh Dr. Gregory from LSU’s War Museum.

19:24

19 minutes, 24 seconds

Wonderful man is a polymath. He’s going to be there with us again helping people make their very own shields. It’s a fun

process. You can decorate it and uh you get a workable shield afterwards. Wow. Um I mean we just have so much going on.

19:39

19 minutes, 39 seconds

[laughter] It’s going to be a fun time.

19:40

19 minutes, 40 seconds

Sounds like this is one of your biggest events of the year over at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. Yes, sir. It is. Okay. Spend a lot of time on it.

19:48

19 minutes, 48 seconds

There’s a lot of time. All right. And it it almost sounds like it kind of gets you ready for Halloween.

19:54

19 minutes, 54 seconds

A little bit. I mean, if you’re familiar with Renfair, uh it would it would tickle me if a whole bunch of people

20:00

20 minutes

showed up in their most medieval garb for this event.

20:05

20 minutes, 5 seconds

Okay. All right, Brandon. Uh anything else going on at the library?

20:10

20 minutes, 10 seconds

Oh, always. Uh we’ve got I mean MakerFair is coming up obviously. Uh you know, the state library’s big book festival is coming up on Halloween day.

20:21

20 minutes, 21 seconds

Mhm. Uh we have author illustrator coming up.

20:24

20 minutes, 24 seconds

I believe one of the other uh uh library employees talked about that. Um just tons of stuff. If you want to find out what’s going on at the library and not

20:32

20 minutes, 32 seconds

rely on my middle-aged memory, just go to our website at uh ebrpl.com and check out our events calendar. It is chaka

20:40

20 minutes, 40 seconds

block with dozens of events every day all throughout the parish.

20:45

20 minutes, 45 seconds

Good stuff. Thanks a lot, Brandon. I’m glad we were able to catch up tonight and we’ll talk again soon, I’m sure. Absolutely. Take care.

20:52

20 minutes, 52 seconds

Stadium. LSU and Texas A&M. Dave Wilson of ESPN, who covers both the Aggies and Texas. Texas has got a big game, too.

21:09

21 minutes, 9 seconds

They’re at Tennessee. How about these three games that are on the slate?

21:13

21 minutes, 13 seconds

There’s there’s a reason why the SEC is the best conference in college football and the TV ratings will tell you that too. Nearly 11 mill according to the

21:22

21 minutes, 22 seconds

Neielson ratings nearly 11 million people watch the LSU Old Miss game.

21:27

21 minutes, 27 seconds

That’s a pretty big number. But you got three big games coming up this week. Of course LSU A&M Texas Tennessee Old Miss Florida. We’ll take a break. Dave will

21:36

21 minutes, 36 seconds

join us when we come back here on Tiger Radio.

21:38

22:12

22 minutes, 12 seconds

All right, we’re here on Tiger Rag Radio and it’s time to dive into Saturday night’s game. LSU and Texas A&M. Oh,

22:20

22 minutes, 20 seconds

boy. Remember what happened last last year when these two teams met? Uh, shut up, Jeff.

22:26

22 minutes, 26 seconds

How the world has changed at LSU athletics. Jeff, shut up.

22:29

22 minutes, 29 seconds

Okay. Well, anyways, Dave Wilson is here to uh join us uh to talk about this game. He covers Texas A&M for ESPN.

22:38

22 minutes, 38 seconds

Dave, thanks a lot for uh spending a few minutes with us tonight. How you doing? I’m doing fine. Thanks for having me.

22:44

22 minutes, 44 seconds

We’re doing well. What the heck happened with the Aggies against Kentucky last Saturday?

22:48

22 minutes, 48 seconds

Yeah, I mean, that wasn’t merely a a loss to Kentucky. It it lost at Kyle Field with a top 10 ranking in championship expectations. What What did Kentucky expose?

22:59

22 minutes, 59 seconds

Yeah, I think it was really kind of a a shock and it wasn’t a fluke. I mean, uh, you know, Kentucky also dropped a wide

23:06

23 minutes, 6 seconds

openen touchdown pass. they pounded the ball on them in the second half and ran it down their throat and they kind of they kind of got the best of them on both lines with I think which I think

23:14

23 minutes, 14 seconds

was really a a shock for Aggie fans who you know it had been uh after years of sort of underachieving

23:24

23 minutes, 24 seconds

you know Mike Elco looked like and still you know may look like that he’s been able to sort of write the ship there and they’ve been playing really fundamental

23:32

23 minutes, 32 seconds

football and and doing a very good job on evaluating players and finding players and and uh and it just they really just got

23:41

23 minutes, 41 seconds

beat badly at home and you know Elco said there were no positives for for him from that game at all.

23:47

23 minutes, 47 seconds

Do you think Dave that that Reed is sort of salivating right now looking at the fact that he’s got a Blake Baker LSU defense that he’s facing this week after

23:57

23 minutes, 57 seconds

basically Kentucky shut him down last week. [laughter] Yeah. I mean, who would think that that would be that might be the uh the thing

24:04

24 minutes, 4 seconds

that gets him going? But he has, you know, he has obviously had a a charmed charm life against the Tigers. He, you

24:11

24 minutes, 11 seconds

know, it’s kind of the the scene of him first showing up and and becoming the next big thing for&m off the bench and then and then last year uh what a

24:21

24 minutes, 21 seconds

performance. And so he his psyche is really hurting right now. And I think he, you know, Elco compared him to a pitcher that couldn’t throw strikes in

24:28

24 minutes, 28 seconds

that game. Um and uh and I think maybe he maybe he’s looking forward to to getting back there two years in a row

24:36

24 minutes, 36 seconds

under it’s a must must win for both teams already this early in the year and um it you know maybe it’s the thing that

24:44

24 minutes, 44 seconds

ignites him again but it it it was really a it was really a rough a rough watch and um so many so many wide open

24:53

24 minutes, 53 seconds

passes that he that he missed and it was a it was a kind of a bizarre a bizarre thing.

25:00

25 minutes

Hey Dave, it’s Glenn. Thanks for joining us. Um, you you don’t just cover Texas A&M. You cover a lot of uh sports for

25:07

25 minutes, 7 seconds

ESPN. Is this uh when was the last time you were at Tiger Stadium for a game?

25:13

25 minutes, 13 seconds

So, this will make you guys laugh, but I grew up in East Texas in Kilgore, so 60 mi from Shreport. I uh I grew up

25:22

25 minutes, 22 seconds

spending a lot of time in Louisiana. I I went to a lot of&m LSU games in College Station. Um, but I spent a long time in the newspaper business and then in uh

25:30

25 minutes, 30 seconds

and I worked at the ESPN HQ in Connecticut for almost a decade as an editor. So when I came back to Texas in

25:37

25 minutes, 37 seconds

2018, um, I didn’t start writing until 2020. So I really haven’t even been over there that much. And my first game was

25:44

25 minutes, 44 seconds

the Florida game when Lagway threw the five picks and then Brian Kelly yelled at all of us in the locker room in the post game. [laughter] And and you know,

25:53

25 minutes, 53 seconds

you know, I remember sitting there and kind of laughing and being like, man, this, you know, I thought it was just some stick, you know, and I’m cracking up and [laughter] I’m looking around and

26:01

26 minutes, 1 second

everybody’s going, you know, man, he ain’t joking. This is for real. Wow.

26:08

26 minutes, 8 seconds

That’s pretty good. That’s [laughter] good at first experience, that’s for sure.

26:12

26 minutes, 12 seconds

Yeah. And so, so I’m I love I’ve always loved, you know, uh, like I said, I’ve always loved Louisiana. My dad and I

26:19

26 minutes, 19 seconds

would go to Jazzfest all the time in New Orleans. I spend a lot of time uh in that part. And so I I love any chance I get, especially when I get to do it, you

26:27

26 minutes, 27 seconds

know, to get paid to do it, to come spend a weekend in Baton Rouge and go to a night game at Tiger Stadium. I’m super excited to be back this weekend. And um

26:35

26 minutes, 35 seconds

and you know the fact that I know this rivalry well from being I went to&m from 91 to 93 kind of right when RC

26:44

26 minutes, 44 seconds

Slogan was getting going and you know I know how it was a money game for for the for the Tigers for so long&m was just a

26:52

26 minutes, 52 seconds

little you know allmale military school for years and then they kind of flipped it for a little while then it flipped back and it’s just been such a streaky thing

26:59

26 minutes, 59 seconds

and such a fun rivalry that I I am so excited to get to be there to see it in that atmosphere.

27:05

27 minutes, 5 seconds

Dave, what is the biggest difference between this&m team and last year’s team that made the college football playoff?

27:13

27 minutes, 13 seconds

You know, last year I think there was this momentum that they had of like, you know, the Jimbo era was so disappointing

27:21

27 minutes, 21 seconds

because they&m has a history of making these big swings on coaches, right? I mean, they, you know, they hired Bear Bryant from Kentucky. They hired Jackie

27:29

27 minutes, 29 seconds

Cheryl from Pit to give him the first million-dollar contract in college football history. They um you know and

27:36

27 minutes, 36 seconds

then they threw all this money at at Jimbo and gave him the big contract and the empty plaque and and it was and it was embarrassing. And so when you when

27:45

27 minutes, 45 seconds

they hired Elco, it was almost like they’d hired a grown-up who came in and and looked like they finally were going to harness this potential that they had.

27:54

27 minutes, 54 seconds

And last year it was just sort of this like exciting thing where all the pieces were coming together. And I think that

28:02

28 minutes, 2 seconds

was the shock of this weekend really is for them to have been in the top 10

28:09

28 minutes, 9 seconds

uh all the way for over a year um and 17 straight polls which that that’s so you know really rare in&m history even

28:18

28 minutes, 18 seconds

though they have had the money and the talent and all this stuff. I think that was like this building thing of excitement. And so what happened to what

28:26

28 minutes, 26 seconds

happened Saturday was really kind of a shock to the system for everybody. And there’s this Aggies have this this sort of dread that’s always underneath them.

28:34

28 minutes, 34 seconds

Here we go again. This you know I saw a thread on Texas Aags, you know, immediately after the game of comparing this game to Dennis Francion 77 to

28:43

28 minutes, 43 seconds

nothing loss to Oklahoma when you realize that this is the next one of the That’s a man. I know it’s crazy though.

28:51

28 minutes, 51 seconds

But that’s So I think this year’s team the difference is, you know, they do have a first a firsttime play caller in Hullman Wiggins as the offensive

28:58

28 minutes, 58 seconds

coordinator and they lost Colin Klein uh who’s done a good job at Kansas State already. And so, you know, they there there’s a lot of new faces on the

29:07

29 minutes, 7 seconds

offensive line. Um you know, there’s a new defensive coordinator. So, two new coordinators, all this. And I think I think that’s what everybody’s waiting to

29:15

29 minutes, 15 seconds

see. How do they respond in this environment, in this game against a team like this? And and you know, there’s not a lot of history between Elco and and

29:23

29 minutes, 23 seconds

Lane. Um, and you know, Lane used to love to beat up Jimbo and and take take shots at him at Old Miss. And so, so I

29:32

29 minutes, 32 seconds

do think I do think it’s got all the makings of a really interesting matchup, especially sort of strength on strength between the two coaches, Lane’s offense

29:40

29 minutes, 40 seconds

against Elco’s defense. and and um so I think the difference is like we don’t really know sort of what&m is right now

29:48

29 minutes, 48 seconds

and and this game is going to go a long way to determining that.

29:51

29 minutes, 51 seconds

Which team do you think is under more pressure right now? Both coming off of big losses.

29:58

29 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, I think it’s probably uh it’s got to be LSU to me at home. um because the emotion behind that last

30:06

30 minutes, 6 seconds

game and it’s a you know two years in a row to get to play at home and it’s so rare to lose in that situation like they

30:13

30 minutes, 13 seconds

did last year and you know I know the Tiger fans were you know so mad about the Tommy Moffett situation and then and then&m made a big deal about that after

30:21

30 minutes, 21 seconds

the win last year and I think it’s just this year it feels like uh you know&m had all these hopes and they had all

30:30

30 minutes, 30 seconds

these dreams but but I do think there were still a lot of question marks because they lost so many key players.

30:35

30 minutes, 35 seconds

LSU on the other hand was bringing in, you know, whatever 49 I think new players and and Lane Keifin, there was all this enthusiasm and all this

30:43

30 minutes, 43 seconds

excitement and they became sort of the villains of college football. And so I do think that the pressure might be on as much as Lane said last week that the

30:51

30 minutes, 51 seconds

pressure was all on Old Miss, um I do think it’s it’s probably more uh more on LSU in this situation.

30:58

30 minutes, 58 seconds

Okay. So, you you talked about Elco saying Marcel Reed was uh not throwing strikes last week and Sam Levit wasn’t

31:06

31 minutes, 6 seconds

making layups. He overthrew two two people wide open, missed two people wide open, all for touchdowns. Could have

31:14

31 minutes, 14 seconds

been a three touchdown difference for LSU. So, Saturday night, you’re in a press box in Tiger Stadium. It gets to be the fourth quarter. It’s third and

31:22

31 minutes, 22 seconds

seven. Which quarterback would you trust more on third and seven in the fourth quarter, Reed or Levit? And why?

31:30

31 minutes, 30 seconds

Man, that is a great question. I do think Levit, you know, I I covered the Texas playoff game against Arizona

31:38

31 minutes, 38 seconds

State. I think Levitt is such a dynamic player. Um, almost underrated. I talked to one coach this offseason where I

31:45

31 minutes, 45 seconds

said, you know, who is Sorsby the best quarterback in the portal? and he said, “Oh, no. You know, Sam Lev could be Johnny Manzel if you put him in the

31:52

31 minutes, 52 seconds

right offense.” And I and I remember being kind of surprised by that because you knew he was athletic, but I but you started to see some of that and and the

32:00

32 minutes

Agies are almost hesitant to run Reed because he’s so small. Now, he has had success. Obviously, he did last year, but I do think I would trust Levit more

32:09

32 minutes, 9 seconds

a little bit in that situation right now. But the other difference is, you know, Elco’s third down defense is just it’s usually the best in the country.

32:18

32 minutes, 18 seconds

Um, he is so good. They’re so good on third downs and what they do on third downs is so interesting. So, I probably trust Lemore more, but I think it’s

32:25

32 minutes, 25 seconds

probably a tougher sled for him on third down against&m.

32:29

32 minutes, 29 seconds

Talking to Dave Wilson from ESPN. Now, Dave, you also cover Texas. Uh, you will you be at LSU again in a in a few weeks

32:36

32 minutes, 36 seconds

for your second game at Tiger Stadium this this year when the Longhorns come in?

32:41

32 minutes, 41 seconds

I would hope so. It’s sort of week to week, you know, where I get sent. And I mean, I’m lucky in that I’m in Austin and I, you know, I I kind of um we’re so

32:49

32 minutes, 49 seconds

regional at this point or so national really that there’s so few of us compared to the old days that, you know,

32:55

32 minutes, 55 seconds

I might go to I kind of I’ve kind of tried to like incorporate more LSU into the mix. But I’m usually at&m Texas, you

33:04

33 minutes, 4 seconds

know, Oklahoma, something around these parts. But LSU certainly is a place that I’m looking um looking to get to more

33:12

33 minutes, 12 seconds

often. and and of course, you know, that that matchup will be another brand name matchup that I think everybody will be very excited about.

33:19

33 minutes, 19 seconds

Is is Texas a lot better than Texas A&M from what you’ve seen or is it is it close or is it too early?

33:26

33 minutes, 26 seconds

I think um Texas’s defense right now is is so good and um I do think I do think they’re probably more put together right

33:34

33 minutes, 34 seconds

now than&M is. Obviously having beaten&m the last two years with a spot to the SEC championship on the line, you know,

33:42

33 minutes, 42 seconds

that’s that’s going to be the that’s where you start seeing the Aggies start to raise hell when if if Elco loses his

33:49

33 minutes, 49 seconds

first three to Texas. And you know how that goes when there’s certain games that you can have a great season, but if you lose that game and it starts to add up kind of like Ryan Day went through

33:57

33 minutes, 57 seconds

that with Michigan until he finally did it.

34:00

34 minutes

Dave, thanks a lot for your time tonight, man. We appreciate it. enjoy Tiger Stadium on Saturday night and I don’t think Thanks for having me and um I’m really

34:08

34 minutes, 8 seconds

looking forward to getting there and eating some good food and and taking it all in.

34:11

34 minutes, 11 seconds

Yeah. And I don’t think Lane will yell at you on [laughter] after the game, win or lose. So he might be covering spoiled this year. [laughter] Nobody’s spoiled. You’re right.

34:20

34 minutes, 20 seconds

Thanks, Dave.

34:21

34 minutes, 21 seconds

All right, Dave Wilson, who will who covers uh the SEC and college football for ESPN. We’ll take a break. More of Tiger Rag Radio after this.

Chapter 5: LSU sexual assault investigation

34:28

34 minutes, 28 seconds

Tiger Rag Radio is back on the air. Back here on Tiger Rag Radio, Jeff Palmo along with Glen Gilbo, Todd Horn. I

34:36

34 minutes, 36 seconds

thought we were going to have a normal game week and then uh we had a breaking story today where East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillary Moore

34:44

34 minutes, 44 seconds

announced he’s uh investigating an alleged sexual assault involving a a student athlete on LSU’s campus. And Tik

34:54

34 minutes, 54 seconds

Tok post from a LSU student by the name of Kendall Danielle. Um, she detailed

35:01

35 minutes, 1 second

what had happened to her as she claimed she was raped by an LSU football player on October 18th, 2025. That’s the same

35:09

35 minutes, 9 seconds

day that LSU was on the road against Vanderbilt. So, could have possibly been, if the story is true, an LSU football player that might not have been

35:16

35 minutes, 16 seconds

on the travel roster, uh, or was hurt or something like that and didn’t travel with the team to to, um, Vanderbilt for

35:24

35 minutes, 24 seconds

that game. Anyways, um she claims that she was raped and she took it up with the LSU Title 9 office. It was a lengthy

35:32

35 minutes, 32 seconds

investigation. Uh she claims that uh during the hearing in front of the LSU Title 9 that the player admitted to

35:40

35 minutes, 40 seconds

raping uh Danielle and she also took her story to the LSU police department. And in her Tik Tok post, she uh actually,

35:50

35 minutes, 50 seconds

you could tell she’s kind of secretly trying to tape the conversation that she’s having with the LSU police investigators and them telling her, you

35:57

35 minutes, 57 seconds

know, um you could pursue this, but uh there’s probably a good chance it’s not going to go anywhere was kind of the

36:04

36 minutes, 4 seconds

tone that you were getting. So anyway, she has uh posted these two statements uh or these two uh video blogs if you

36:11

36 minutes, 11 seconds

would on Tik Tok here this month. And uh she also says that the uh player who was suspended from school, not suspended

36:20

36 minutes, 20 seconds

from the team, but suspended from school was actually allowed back in school uh early September. Uh is what she is what she said. Um so this is where we’re at.

36:33

36 minutes, 33 seconds

LSU did put out a statement saying that, and we don’t know who the football player is, the but LSU President Wade Roose did put out a a statement saying

36:41

36 minutes, 41 seconds

that the incident has been handled professionally and that LSU has strictly followed their policies, procedures, and best practices, and they will work with

36:50

36 minutes, 50 seconds

the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office on their investigation. So, and we we also don’t know if the football player

36:57

36 minutes, 57 seconds

was or is on the 20206. Correct. We don’t It’s not It’s not clear. Not clear at all.

37:03

37 minutes, 3 seconds

That That’s what I was going to say. We do not know if it isn’t an active football player on this team. What we do know is that LSU does have a history of

37:14

37 minutes, 14 seconds

not following through accurately on a lot of its Title N investigations

37:21

37 minutes, 21 seconds

or or following its policy following its own policies in the past.

37:26

37 minutes, 26 seconds

That’s not to say they haven’t corrected that. We don’t know. We don’t know any specifics about this case. We are investigating it actively at the moment

37:34

37 minutes, 34 seconds

and we hope to have more information but these things take time and they’re built they have builtin stall situation. So it

37:43

37 minutes, 43 seconds

may be a several weeks before we are able to get to any uh exculptive exculptative type of research or

37:52

37 minutes, 52 seconds

information on this if then uh because it’s often you know taken care of before we can get to that. So,

38:01

38 minutes, 1 second

and we’re not sure how long Hillary Moore’s investigation will take either.

38:05

38 minutes, 5 seconds

And that’s my point. It, you know, Hillary Moore is uh is very good at his job and he um may quickly determine that

38:14

38 minutes, 14 seconds

this is not something worth continuing to investigate or he may continue it and solve it off offline or Go ahead. Go ahead.

38:24

38 minutes, 24 seconds

Did Did she have video of the questioning she had with police? Yes, there’s a brief snippet.

38:30

38 minutes, 30 seconds

And does it look like the police were not that interested in what you saw or That was with LSU police, right? Correct. Be careful. Right. Right.

38:39

38 minutes, 39 seconds

Baton Rouge police department and Baton Rouge police said you have to go to LSU since this was an alleged incident that occurred on campus. Um you know, you’re

38:47

38 minutes, 47 seconds

only getting I think it’s about 20 25 seconds of it. Okay. Okay.

38:51

38 minutes, 51 seconds

Um but it’s and the way her commentary is it kind of sets you up to think Yeah. that the police or those investigators were not.

39:01

39 minutes, 1 second

So, we don’t know if that’s an accurate depiction of it. Let me let me just say this. So, so we don’t know if that’s a correct interpretation of of the LSU

39:11

39 minutes, 11 seconds

police’s uh conduct or how they talk to her. But well, my point is that a police

39:18

39 minutes, 18 seconds

force should never I think should almost never say, “Oh, you probably shouldn’t [snorts] pursue this.” Yeah, they need to kind of stay objective in that situation.

39:27

39 minutes, 27 seconds

Let’s read WDE Roose’s official comment.

39:29

39 minutes, 29 seconds

All right, so this was his official uh statement. LSU and its current administration take very seriously any allegations of misconduct involving

39:37

39 minutes, 37 seconds

students on our campuses. Safety and security must be our number one priority. Let me assure everyone that this incident has been handled

ugly as far as competitive games, but this week it’s you’re underestimating the McNe State Cowboys. [laughter] I might be. I might be. But this week,

40:42

40 minutes, 42 seconds

first of all, Miss emotional win. What happens to them when they go to the swamp on Saturday and face the college football coach of the year and John

40:57

40 minutes, 57 seconds

Yeah. I just I think that there there will be no hangover from Miss and I think Miss is a good team. And I think

41:05

Miss will take care of business in Gainesville.

41:08

41 minutes, 8 seconds

Okay. All right. What do you think, Glenn?

41:10

41 minutes, 10 seconds

I’m gonna go ahead and predict that Florida will win, but I’m going to write that Old [laughter] Miss will win is what I’m going to do.

41:17

41 minutes, 17 seconds

Which what’s going to be the third verdict? A tie.

41:21

41 minutes, 21 seconds

No, I I do think though that that is a that happens a lot in in college football. So, that would be an interesting game to watch. I mean, Old

41:29

41 minutes, 29 seconds

Miss could come out flat and and and lose that game and and you know, Florida can be a wild place to play, but um boy, I’m I’m

41:37

41 minutes, 37 seconds

pumped about tomorrow, man. To actually see Will Wait again and and hear him beyond the Tiger Rag promo and

41:44

41 minutes, 44 seconds

talk about the four players he has for us.

41:47

41 minutes, 47 seconds

42:05

42 minutes, 5 seconds

Is Is Holly Row going to be there? I [laughter] don’t know.

42:09

42 minutes, 9 seconds

Hollywood’s going to be in Baton Rouge, I would assume, because I think it’s uh No, she’s No, she’s at the Texas game next week. Oh, yeah.

42:16

42 minutes, 16 seconds

She’s at the Texas game. Yeah, they’re talking about how nothing’s going to happen. They’ve been talking about it.

42:19

42 minutes, 19 seconds

So, I’m taking Tennessee. [laughter] Rose is going to be there. I’m taking Tennessee. How did Tennessee find Kennesaw State?

42:26

42 minutes, 26 seconds

I don’t know. All right, we got less than 20 seconds. LSU A&M, what do you think, man? I really don’t know right now. I’m going to think Levit’s going to uh

42:33

42 minutes, 33 seconds

respond and and I think that the LSU offensive line’s going to be able to give him about a second and a half instead of a half a second. All right, 5 seconds. Go on.

42:41

42 minutes, 41 seconds

Well, as our guest Dave Wilson said, um I think we’re going to see the Sam Levit become Johnny Manzel this weekend. I think LSU is going to win easy.

42:50
