The LSU basketball coaching staff now has the same number of coaches as the Tigers played on Wednesday night in an exhibition win over Central Florida – six.

LSU head coach Will Wade is still trying to add a few more players to his 10-man roster as they await NCAA eligibility clearance, but apparently it is not as difficult to hire an assistant coach.

The latest LSU assistant is Mark Hsu, who previously was an assistant at DePaul from 2019 through 2021, but has been out of college coaching for the last five years, according to his biographical information.

Hsu (pronounced like shoe) puts Wade’s staff at the maximum of five assistants – former Mississippi State and Western Kentucky head coach Rick Stansbury, former LSU head coach Johnny Jones, former Georgia Tech head coach Damon Stoudamire, former Wade assistant at McNeese State and at North Carolina State Vernon Hamilton and Hsu.

Hsu has been on LSU’s staff at least as far back as the opening exhibition game on Oct. 8 when LSU won, 63-60, at McNeese State, but LSU did not release the news at that time. And he went unnoticed with all the attention on the roster. Hsu, 43, was noticed during the Tigers’ 85-81 exhibition win over Central Florida on Wednesday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, and his hiring was later confirmed by LSU.

Before coaching at DePaul, Hsu coached at Western Kentucky under Stansbury from 2017-19 and previously coached at Binghamton, Texas Southern, California State-Bakersfield and New Mexico State.

Unfortunately for Wade, Hsu played four seasons at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania, from 1999-2003, so he has no eligibility remaining. Unless, of course, he sues the NCAA for a fifth season, which has been granted to college athletes who began their careers in 2023 and not before.

Hsu began his coaching career in the 2003-04 season as a volunteer assistant at Cabrini College.
