LSU linebacker Whit Weeks had surgery on his broken fibula – near his shin and ankle – on Monday, but LSU coach Lane Kiffin had no more information on the senior captain’s status for the rest of the season.
“I don’t exactly,” Kiffin said when asked if had a better idea about Weeks’ timeline now at the coach’s weekly press conference on Monday. “I just know he’s will be out for a while. That’s a tough one for the team.”
Kiffin said Sunday that he was unsure if Weeks will be able to play “later in the season, or not at all.”
Weeks, a 2023 signee from Watkinsville, Georgia, who could return for a fifth season in 2027 via a new NCAA rule passed over the summer, broke his leg in the third quarter of the Tigers’ 35-6 win over Texas A&M on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium and left the game on crutches.
“It’s not just because of the player that he is,” said Kiffin, whose daughter Landry has been dating Weeks for more than a year. “It’s what he brings around him. And how he is. That’s probably why I was probably in the mood that I was in after the game. Just knowing the impact and feeling horrible for him. Having this great year and getting LSU fixed and the defense fixed. And here it is right in the middle of being fixed and playing great, and this happens.”
Kiffin said he didn’t know if Weeks was out for the season.
No. 11 LSU (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) hosts McNeese State (2-3) at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on the SEC Network.

As far as LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt, who suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday’s game, Kiffin said he was going to be “extremely” careful with him this week in practice and in the game Saturday.
