Conversations have been had about the SEC cutting ties with the NCAA and governing itself.

We broke down SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s comments on the future of college football, SEC scheduling and the Protect College Sports Act on Tiger Radio on Tuesday night.

Raymond Partsch of ESPN Radio 103.7 FM in Lafayette also gave his take from SEC Media Days.

Here is the complete transcript of the show from YouTube. Tiger Rag apologizes for any AI generated mistakes:

magazine, Todd Horn, and the editor Glenn Gilbo. Happy SEC football media days. We are halfway through. Of course, Greg Sanki so far, the headliner. We are

1:19

1 minute, 19 seconds

certainly going to get into that. We’ll talk a lot about that here over the next couple of hours. We’ll also hear from a couple of people that are in Tampa for

1:28

1 minute, 28 seconds

the SEC media days, including Raymond Parch, who of course works over at ESPN Southwest Radio, where we are hurt. And

1:36

1 minute, 36 seconds

uh we had some technical difficulties the last couple weeks for some of our affiliates. So, they were not able to catch us live. So, we are glad to be back on in Lafayette and Lake Charles.

1:45

1 minute, 45 seconds

Hello everyone there. We really appreciate you sticking with us and hopefully you were able to catch it on podcast or YouTube or maybe even just

1:53

1 minute, 53 seconds

streamed us at tiger.com. That’s another option as well. Uh so we’ll talk to Raymond coming up later on in this hour.

2:01

2 minutes, 1 second

Chris Gordy, host of the Lockdown SEC podcast, also works for Sports Talk 790 in Houston. We’ll get his thoughts. He’s

2:08

2 minutes, 8 seconds

in Tampa as well. And then um another story there there’s a lot of different stories here that have been uh breaking

2:15

2 minutes, 15 seconds

LSU football scheduling news. Tommy White, we’re going to get into all all that stuff as well, but uh former LSU

2:23

2 minutes, 23 seconds

Tiger Ryan Clark dismissed from ESPN. Uh Dan Zakesy from the Outkick who was uh

2:30

2 minutes, 30 seconds

set to report it as ESPN had to uh quickly dismiss him during the middle of a show. So, we’ll get to Dan’s thoughts

2:39

2 minutes, 39 seconds

on that. And uh Ryan Clark, now a free agent in the sports media world. Todd and Glenn, how you guys doing tonight?

2:46

2 minutes, 46 seconds

Well, Jeff, um Ryan is actually going to be replacing you um next week. Not sure if you heard about that yet, but we’re

2:54

2 minutes, 54 seconds

going to tell you what Ryan got left on air and [laughter] so are you.

2:58

2 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, actually, go ahead and sign off now.

3:02

3 minutes, 2 seconds

Yeah. Now, just real quick, Dan Zachesky, he’s a he’s a heck of a reporter. And Outkick, just so people know, a lot of people don’t realize, it’s really affiliated with Fox Sports.

3:11

3 minutes, 11 seconds

Well, really now Fox News.

3:13

3 minutes, 13 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. And when you click on Outkick story, Fox comes up. So, they they uh that was really a cool story he did along with another guy there, Bobby

3:22

3 minutes, 22 seconds

Barack. They were both reporting on that from different angles and it it’s really some interesting stuff, but didn’t mean to interrupt. Go ahead.

3:30

3 minutes, 30 seconds

I’m a short timer here, so go.

3:32

3 minutes, 32 seconds

[laughter] Yeah. Yeah. Well, you’re supposed to sign off. You’re supposed to sign off.

3:36

3 minutes, 36 seconds

I think we should talk about the American League batting champion first.

3:40

3 minutes, 40 seconds

Who’s the American League B? Tommy White. Tommy White. Tommy White. Yeah, we’ll get into that. We’ll get into that. Uh I also got a little interesting uh nugget. Hopefully I don’t forget when

3:48

3 minutes, 48 seconds

we do get into the baseball talk. You know, the uh obviously there is labor negotiations going on and there could be a significant change when it comes to

3:56

3 minutes, 56 seconds

college baseball. So, I’ll leave that as a tease. Congress going to get involved?

4:00

4 minutes

No. No, I [laughter] don’t think so, dude. Cuz that works so well. [laughter] Well, I guess it’s so amazing that Sanki is and and

4:09

4 minutes, 9 seconds

Patito are upset at what Congress is doing because everybody told them that’s what’s going to happen.

4:14

4 minutes, 14 seconds

All right. So, I guess that is a good way to segue into what we want to talk about. I’ll let you guys start off here.

4:21

4 minutes, 21 seconds

Your impressions of what Greg Sanki had to say Monday to kick off SEC football media days. entirely predictable when it came to the Protect College Sports Act.

4:32

4 minutes, 32 seconds

I mean that the writing’s been on the wall for weeks now. Uh it’s all and I wrote a column today on tiger.com. It’s

4:39

4 minutes, 39 seconds

all about uh Congress is now doing the best they can to keep the SEC at the table. He validated Sanki did the fact

4:48

4 minutes, 48 seconds

that there’s serious consideration to walk away from the NCAA.

4:53

4 minutes, 53 seconds

And um I think that that that’s the biggest news. Uh the rest of the SEC media days bores me.

5:00

5 minutes

Do you do you think Greg would would rather not walk away and and instead get what he wants and stay? Yeah.

5:09

5 minutes, 9 seconds

[clears throat] Okay. Well, I I agree.

5:10

5 minutes, 10 seconds

And I think I think he what he was saying yesterday was kind of like uh finessing Congress or Yeah.

5:18

5 minutes, 18 seconds

You know, kind of a poker game with Congress is what that is, I thought. Well, I I think it’s I think he’s smart.

5:24

5 minutes, 24 seconds

I think it’s negotiations, but I do think he is prepared. Yeah.

5:28

5 minutes, 28 seconds

And I think the Big 10 is prepared to to walk away. And I know that’s not a popular sentiment and I know it scares

5:35

5 minutes, 35 seconds

the hell out of a lot of people, but um and I don’t think it’s likely to happen right now, but I definitely believe that

5:43

5 minutes, 43 seconds

if they restrain them, as much as they’re still trying to do by keeping them from adding teams, uh limiting it

5:52

5 minutes, 52 seconds

the and and limiting the time frame that they can do that and that that hurts their media rights and and they’re not going to stand for that. They’re just

5:59

5 minutes, 59 seconds

simply not. Let let’s say they both split off. You got the Big 10 and you got the SEC. Well, then there’s going to be a natural championship game every

6:08

6 minutes, 8 seconds

year. The Big 10 champion plays the SEC champion for the national championship. Be like the AFC and the NFC. All right.

6:14

6 minutes, 14 seconds

All right. Let’s No, but but I’m serious. That might be the only way the SEC can make the freaking national championship game because they can’t make one the way it is now.

6:22

6 minutes, 22 seconds

This talk of breakaway just needs to stop.

6:24

6 minutes, 24 seconds

Well, it’s not going to because it will kill college athletics. Well, it’ll kill it the way that you’ve seen it for the

6:33

6 minutes, 33 seconds

LA in the way we’ve all been used to it, but it’s different now. This is not the same game it was three years ago.

6:40

6 minutes, 40 seconds

But will it be better or worse? I’m not saying it’ll be better or worse.

6:44

6 minutes, 44 seconds

I’m saying it’s different now. He talked about all this enforcement stuff, Mr.

6:49

6 minutes, 49 seconds

Transparent SEC Commissioner. How come he didn’t in his 43 minutes explain He’s talking about we want everybody to play by the same rules.

6:57

6 minutes, 57 seconds

They do. Well, but that’s not the reason why he first of all, he does not the SC when is the SEC ever going to

7:05

7 minutes, 5 seconds

investigate anything, enforce any rules on their own. They love the fact that they can sit there and tell the NC, oh,

7:12

7 minutes, 12 seconds

it’s the NCAA’s fault. It’s this and that.

7:15

7 minutes, 15 seconds

The reason the reason the SEC and the rest of the and the Big 10 and the rest of college football wanted Congress’s

7:22

7 minutes, 22 seconds

intervention is so they want the antitrust protection and they want conformed rules and that’s it. And that’s all the rest of But they also couldn’t figure things out. Media rights.

7:31

7 minutes, 31 seconds

What? The media rights are are outside of the bounds of that. That’s the restraint that they’re rebelling against the revenue cap. How come he didn’t talk about that?

7:40

7 minutes, 40 seconds

Because he doesn’t he’s that’s not the the negotiating point. The negotiating point right now is stay away from our expansion and stay away from our media rights which are one and the same thing.

7:50

7 minutes, 50 seconds

Why did he say that? He he listed these four reasons on why they oppose the college or what needs to change. He mentioned nothing about that.

7:56

7 minutes, 56 seconds

He was spinning. He He’s I understand, but it’s just it’s a bunch of bull. It is.

8:01

8 minutes, 1 second

It’s a bunch of bull. And this idea that’s splitting off and the grass is greener on the other side. It’s just horrible.

8:09

8 minutes, 9 seconds

And they now [laughter] it’s a pro game.

8:13

8 minutes, 13 seconds

I understand. But it’s a pro game.

8:15

8 minutes, 15 seconds

I understand it’s a pro game, but how do you have March Madness if you just have two conferences? Well, I don’t think that I don’t think that necessarily.

8:24

8 minutes, 24 seconds

You can’t just split football off and then how you do that that explain that to me in 45 seconds.

8:30

8 minutes, 30 seconds

I’m not saying it makes conventional sense.

8:32

8 minutes, 32 seconds

How does that happen? It doesn’t make sense. Nobody’s thinking that. Nobody’s looking.

8:35

8 minutes, 35 seconds

I’m not saying it makes conventional sense. I’m saying we’re because it’s not possible.

8:40

8 minutes, 40 seconds

Look, the next three or five years, the next 3 to 5 years.

8:43

8 minutes, 43 seconds

Yeah. I didn’t say it was going to be good. Okay.

8:45

8 minutes, 45 seconds

They are going to they are going to hurt themselves even more. Follow the money. Okay. You want to talk about the money?

8:53

8 minutes, 53 seconds

Yeah.

8:54

8 minutes, 54 seconds

The a a championship game between the Big 10 and the SEC will not be as well watched as this last year’s national

9:02

9 minutes, 2 seconds

championship because this is going to this is going to upset so many sports fans. If they do this, they’re done with

9:10

9 minutes, 10 seconds

it, Todd. They are done with it. I know here I don’t know about I know here in They are. They will be done with it.

9:18

9 minutes, 18 seconds

People said they were done with the NFL with all the national anthem stuff.

9:21

9 minutes, 21 seconds

Oh, that says something. This is something where you’re completely changing a sport, a tradition that you’ve had for hundreds of years.

9:29

9 minutes, 29 seconds

Let me explain something. Let me explain one fact to you.

9:32

9 minutes, 32 seconds

But if a Big 10 team plays an SEC team in a national championship game, regardless of how those two guys, people are going to watch it. people are going

9:39

9 minutes, 39 seconds

to not if they create some crazy little league and it’s just their own little rules and if it’s still a game. It’s still Big 10 vers.

9:47

9 minutes, 47 seconds

If the Big 10 has 25 26 teams and the SEC has 25 26 teams.

9:52

9 minutes, 52 seconds

Well, how are you going to get those teams? Where are they coming from?

9:55

9 minutes, 55 seconds

Well, number one is you tell Congress you can’t you can’t limit our expansion over the next five years.

10:00

10 minutes

Well, it’s hard to just tell Congress what to do.

10:03

10 minutes, 3 seconds

Well, I know, but that’s what Well, they don’t have to agree to it. That’s where they could break away right away. I’m not saying what’s going to happen. I’m saying that we don’t know what’s going

10:11

10 minutes, 11 seconds

to happen. But I guarantee you what will happen is nobody’s going to be able to tell Greg Sanki and whatever Patito or whatever his name is,

10:20

10 minutes, 20 seconds

Tony Patiti, that that they can’t uh negotiate their own media rights. Well, Tony Patiti and

10:27

10 minutes, 27 seconds

Greg Sanki, I think their big problems is they’re they’re trying to solve and fix some of the issues that involve all

10:36

10 minutes, 36 seconds

of college football, but they have dual motivations cuz they’re trying to keep their conference. And that that’s not going to work

10:44

10 minutes, 44 seconds

cuz cuz in the NFL, like Verge told us a couple of times, the NFL is all together

10:50

10 minutes, 50 seconds

um Monday through Saturday, okay? And then they play the games. But but they’re all together and and they’ve got

10:57

10 minutes, 57 seconds

their media rights in in a good system, you know, and and and they have and they don’t have an owner that that makes

11:04

11 minutes, 4 seconds

those decisions. They got they have a commissioner and and uh and and Tony and Tony Patiti and Greg Sanki, particularly

11:12

11 minutes, 12 seconds

Sanki, they just I just don’t think they can think big enough. And but Patiti is much more qualified than than Sanki is.

11:21

11 minutes, 21 seconds

To me, Sanki is kind of a he’s too much like Roger Goodell, though. Roger Goodell finally figured it out. It’s a ship that doesn’t have a captain.

11:29

11 minutes, 29 seconds

That’s true. [clears throat] And it’s just sailing in the open seas and it could hit an iceberg. It could hit whatever, right? But but to say it’s not going to

11:38

11 minutes, 38 seconds

change is just I never said it was not going to change, but I think the change that they are thinking about or even throwing out

11:45

11 minutes, 45 seconds

there is going to hurt the sport even more. And they’re not going to If you look at the draft of the Protect College Sports Act now compared to what

11:53

11 minutes, 53 seconds

it was two weeks ago, it’s night and day already. So, well, well, that’s fine. That’s fine.

11:58

11 minutes, 58 seconds

You can, but to to throw this stuff, well, the breakaway and this and that.

12:03

12 minutes, 3 seconds

Uh, I I relistened to an interview that he did with Paul Finebomb uh a month ago, Greg Seni, and this was right when

12:11

12 minutes, 11 seconds

the bill was first drafted. So he he’s at that point he said there had been no discussions no discussions of he lied a super league.

12:21

12 minutes, 21 seconds

He lied.

12:22

12 minutes, 22 seconds

Well they’re doing a distrust to their fans.

12:27

12 minutes, 27 seconds

Well I think Charles Anig said it best a couple days ago. He said he said both Petiti and Sanki want to go to heaven

12:34

12 minutes, 34 seconds

but neither of them wants to die. In other words, they they can’t they need to learn how to give up something. Yeah. You know, and that’s what you do in DC.

12:42

12 minutes, 42 seconds

You give up this for this. That’s how New Orleans got the Saints. They you give up this and and you take that and and they’re not they’re not doing that, right?

12:51

12 minutes, 51 seconds

Well, according to Christianity, you can have heaven on earth. You don’t have to die. All right? That’s a whole another topic I don’t want to get into. But, uh

12:59

12 minutes, 59 seconds

heaven’s over for the SEC. [laughter] The Big 10 runs things. I am just I I I um it was a complete eye roll with what

13:07

13 minutes, 7 seconds

he had to say yesterday. I think it’s just some of it.

13:11

13 minutes, 11 seconds

All right. Well, uh we got uh my eyes are ready to roll. [laughter] All right. Uh go ahead, Case. Throw

13:18

13 minutes, 18 seconds

something out there as far as uh I know you got a couple things that uh he had to say yesterday. What? Let’s hit one of them here before we go while he’s talking.

13:26

13 minutes, 26 seconds

[laughter]

13:27

13 minutes, 27 seconds

And so understand that beneath the observation is frustration.

13:34

13 minutes, 34 seconds

But I also know the pride with which I spoke of 13 national championships. And there is meaning and value. And I do

13:41

13 minutes, 41 seconds

think a national expectation that we pres we participate in a national organization. But that national

13:48

13 minutes, 48 seconds

organization must function in a healthy manner.

13:53

13 minutes, 53 seconds

Otherwise, that simmering will continue.

13:59

13 minutes, 59 seconds

All right. Well, we’ll see if they’re able to get something done. I I don’t I I I I do sense that

14:08

14 minutes, 8 seconds

breaking away is really their last option. I I I get that. I just don’t even really think it’s it’s in my mind, it’s not feasible. It’s not feasible.

14:18

14 minutes, 18 seconds

It’s not going to result in what they’re anticipating.

14:21

14 minutes, 21 seconds

You’re gonna you’re going to get together with a conference that you can’t even agree with as far as how a postseason how postseason should be.

14:29

14 minutes, 29 seconds

Who’s going to who’s going to enforce the rules? You don’t even want to enforce the rules right now. The SEC could It is funny that the SEC is talking

14:37

14 minutes, 37 seconds

about enforcing rules because historically they’re the most cheating conference in history. Well, and I I do want to say something.

14:43

14 minutes, 43 seconds

The people that I have talked to that are quote unquote in the no are not talking about breaking away together.

14:50

14 minutes, 50 seconds

Although that’s our natural assumption.

14:52

14 minutes, 52 seconds

Well, that’s even worse in my mind. So, what are you I’m not saying they’re they’re they’re talking about it exclusive.

14:57

14 minutes, 57 seconds

I understand, but they don’t are So, you’re going to have the SEC baseball tournament. LSU beats Tennessee. That’s the championship. Hurrah, hurray. Uh,

15:06

15 minutes, 6 seconds

no. Omaha. How does that How does that really How does that make anyone happy?

15:11

15 minutes, 11 seconds

my my perception of it and I know this is going to cause you to go into convulsions but I don’t believe that the

15:18

15 minutes, 18 seconds

other sports are necessarily earmarked I don’t know how I’m not a freaking genius do it that way well they’ve already done it that way I

15:27

15 minutes, 27 seconds

mean in what way football championships are done differently than than baseball

15:34

15 minutes, 34 seconds

that’s fine but you still have 134 teams in multiple conferences battling it out just because we can’t write it out and plan it doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

15:44

15 minutes, 44 seconds

It I’m telling you it will you you’re hurting yourself even more.

15:48

15 minutes, 48 seconds

Yeah, you’re hurting yourself even more.

15:50

15 minutes, 50 seconds

I understand that that’s what you believe and I don’t disagree necessarily with you, but I’m telling you that just because you believe that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

15:58

15 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, they’re going to lose a lot of fans. They’re going to lose a lot of casual fans. They’re going to lose I I don’t think they’re going to lose

16:04

16 minutes, 4 seconds

fans. I think I think if you just if you just have an SEC league, do you think

16:11

16 minutes, 11 seconds

the fan who from that’s a Miami Hurricane fan right now that watches all the championship games, do you think they’re going to watch the SEC Championship game?

16:20

16 minutes, 20 seconds

I’ll tell you what Greg Sanki would say to that. He would say that 80,000 people attend.

16:25

16 minutes, 25 seconds

Well, what what did Matt Hayes tell us when he was on the show? That SEC draws the most TV viewers.

16:31

16 minutes, 31 seconds

That That’s fine. That’s under this environment. SEC versus it would be a different it would you’re going to alienate a huge fan base

16:40

16 minutes, 40 seconds

outside of the SEC that will just they will be tuned on. Are you working for Ted Cruz?

16:45

16 minutes, 45 seconds

I’m not working for anybody. [laughter] I’m just telling you and the Big 10 does have a lot more televisions and bigger cities than the SEC. All right, let’s take our first break.

16:53

16 minutes, 53 seconds

More on this conversation and then how the SEC also got hoodwinkedked and getting into this nineame SEC schedule.

16:59

16 minutes, 59 seconds

And Mr. Thank you. [laughter] He is No Mike’s Live Roy.

17:05

We’ll be back after this here on Tiger Rag Radio.

17:39

17 minutes, 39 seconds

Tiger Rag Radio is back.

17:43

17 minutes, 43 seconds

Back here on Tiger Rag Radio. So, the other u a lot of different talking points from Greg Seni on Monday. One of

17:50

17 minutes, 50 seconds

the others is the nineame conference schedule. As a fan, I love it. I I I wish they would play 10 conference

17:56

17 minutes, 56 seconds

games. I wish they would. But um when you look at the reason why they did it,

18:03

18 minutes, 3 seconds

one obviously money, right? Uh ESPN, their TV partner Disney wanted them to uh add another game. And that that’s a

18:10

18 minutes, 10 seconds

big part of it. But the other part was, you know, the Big 10 said, “Hey, if if you guys go to nine games like we do, uh

18:17

18 minutes, 17 seconds

we we’ll look at expanding to 16 teams.” And now, of course, the Big 10 has changed its tune on that. Now they want to do 24.

18:24

18 minutes, 24 seconds

Everybody lies. And then when Greg Sinki, who here’s where he was transparent, um I believe in that he

18:32

18 minutes, 32 seconds

said that when he was talking to those with the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, the strength of schedule is still not going to be a a a

18:42

18 minutes, 42 seconds

major factor in deciding who’s going to get into the college football playoffs. So, the SEC is putting themselves on the line playing

18:51

18 minutes, 51 seconds

nine conference schedule, nine conference games against tougher competition than what the Big 10 is facing, what the Big 12 is facing, what

18:58

18 minutes, 58 seconds

the ACC is facing, what Notre Dame is facing. And now you’re you’re putting yourself at risk of say someone like LSU

19:06

19 minutes, 6 seconds

going nine and three. And let’s just say I I’m going to throw it out there, Virginia Tech goes 10 and two somehow, right? Uh they they they have this great

19:14

19 minutes, 14 seconds

season. Virginia Tech could get in over LSU even though LSU schedule is probably and I haven’t looked at Virginia Tech schedule. I’m just throwing that one out

19:22

19 minutes, 22 seconds

of the air. Uh is much tougher than Virginia Tech.

19:27

19 minutes, 27 seconds

So why I think I think you’re I think it would be better to use Notre Dame because they have the best cream puff schedule in the

19:35

19 minutes, 35 seconds

history of America and they’re guaranteed a spot if they finish in the top 12. got to keep those helmets gold and they’re going to finish 11 and one at worst.

19:45

19 minutes, 45 seconds

I I Yeah. Well, that’s why I didn’t use Notre Dame in this example because if they lose two games then they are really sorry. It was that schedule. Yeah.

19:52

19 minutes, 52 seconds

So So why did Sanki Why did Sanki agree with nine games if if that’s true? I mean it’s like he got hoodwinning because he thought that they wouldn’t

19:59

19 minutes, 59 seconds

they would consider schedule strength more and they’re he also thought they’d go to 16, right?

20:05

20 minutes, 5 seconds

And then how is the College Football Playoff Selection Committee not take that into account? Why are they seriously sitting here saying that the

20:12

20 minutes, 12 seconds

the the Big 12, the competition in the Big 12 is on par with the SEC?

20:18

20 minutes, 18 seconds

Maybe it’s we’re uh SEC fatigue. They they were tired of seeing the SEC win so much. I don’t know.

20:23

20 minutes, 23 seconds

I How did How did this frustrated the heck out of me when I heard him talk about this yesterday?

20:28

20 minutes, 28 seconds

Yeah. And that’s what’s been frustrating Lane. Lane’s been the one saying all the time, you know, you got to get that strength and schedule in there, pal. He

20:36

20 minutes, 36 seconds

told the other coaches that. And then of course in the SEC they’re asking the schools to play another uh power four

20:43

20 minutes, 43 seconds

team where in the Big 10 it all playing G5 teams basically.

20:48

20 minutes, 48 seconds

It’s like it’s another reason for the [laughter] it’s another reason for the SEC to break away completely.

20:55

20 minutes, 55 seconds

Well, yeah. If they break away, they they they could only screw themselves, which is what they did here. [laughter] It’s just I’m ready for the games to

21:04

21 minutes, 4 seconds

start. I’m just tired of all this nonsense talk that’s that’s going on.

21:09

21 minutes, 9 seconds

Let’s just get the game started. Um because it it’ll take my mind off of this other stuff that’s happening that all this clutter that is out there.

21:19

21 minutes, 19 seconds

Was there strength to schedule at the World Cup? Was that did that have anything?

21:22

21 minutes, 22 seconds

Well, that it’s funny. My my friends who are way more into the World Cup than some of my college buddies, they were talking about after Argentina lost.

21:30

21 minutes, 30 seconds

Well, Argentina didn’t play anybody.

21:32

21 minutes, 32 seconds

[laughter]

21:32

21 minutes, 32 seconds

Well, Spain, why why did Spain play so many more games than everybody else?

21:38

21 minutes, 38 seconds

I’m like, “Oh my goodness.” Everybody has strength [laughter] to schedule problems.

21:44

21 minutes, 44 seconds

All right. Well, we’ll get to Raymond Parch, our first guest here, coming up after this on Tiger Egg Radio. Stay tuned. Much more coming up.

We’re back to Tiger Rag Radio.

22:25

22 minutes, 25 seconds

Wow, that’s interesting. Welcome back here to Tiger Rag Radio. Todd Horn, Gwen Gilbo, Case Kishnik, our producer. And

22:33

22 minutes, 33 seconds

let’s bring in our first guest of the night. And we are heard on the radio station that he’s heard on as well every

22:40

22 minutes, 40 seconds

midday and that is ESPN Southwest Radio in Lafayette and Lake Charles. Raymond Parsh is there with his contingent in Tampa. Raymond, how you doing tonight?

22:50

22 minutes, 50 seconds

Thanks for uh joining us on the show.

22:53

22 minutes, 53 seconds

Thanks for allowing us to be on the airwaves on your stations. We appreciate it.

22:58

22 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, we greatly appreciate y’all partnering up with us. We love having Tiger Rag Radio and letting all our folks in Southwest Louisiana be able to

23:05

23 minutes, 5 seconds

hear what you guys do every week. And it’s a pleasure to be on with uh you guys as always, man.

23:09

23 minutes, 9 seconds

And we appreciate you saying that and we appreciate Jeff and [laughter] we appreciate Todd and we appreciate you and we appreciate we appreciate football. Hey, [laughter]

23:18

23 minutes, 18 seconds

so Ra so Raymond, uh, we we’ve been hearing about all the coaches and everything, but what I want to hear about is what is going on in Tampa at

23:27

23 minutes, 27 seconds

night? What what [laughter] did you do last night? What was the media party like like and what did you have to drink?

23:34

23 minutes, 34 seconds

Well, I I I will go back to Sunday, brother, because we were supposed to fly out. Okay. So, we were supposed to fly out on Sunday out of New Orleans and

23:42

23 minutes, 42 seconds

then our flight got delayed and then it got delayed again and then they just decided to say, “Well, you know what?

23:48

23 minutes, 48 seconds

We’re going to fly you, we can fly you to Miami around midnight, but you’ll have to spend the night in a hotel and then we’ll fly you into Tampa from Miami

23:55

23 minutes, 55 seconds

on Monday.” So, we decided to drive impromptu on Sunday. And uh let me tell you that stretch of road between

24:01

24 minutes, 1 second

Tallahassee, Florida, and Tampa, that’s long, man. I’ve made that.

24:06

24 minutes, 6 seconds

It’s long. It’s filled with uh deer and abandoned hotels from the 1950s. So,

24:13

24 minutes, 13 seconds

[laughter]

24:14

24 minutes, 14 seconds

um it’s it’s a beautiful part of the country. Um we nearly got in a wreck. A deer jumped in front of us right by the airport. It was we we got in like at

24:21

24 minutes, 21 seconds

2:00 in the morning on Sundays, uh Monday morning, rather. So, but no, it was uh it it was good. We had our little media suare last night. Uh a

24:31

24 minutes, 31 seconds

place called American Social right there on the bay. I had no idea Tampa was this nice. Oh, yeah. I’d never been before.

24:37

24 minutes, 37 seconds

So, I didn’t realize there was that much uh that that many people with boats and yachts everywhere. Um, but uh we had a we had a good time. I had a little crown

24:45

24 minutes, 45 seconds

and a Sprite. I had a couple of those at the bar. You know, you know, you know, Glenn, you’ve been to these things. You know, uh you have to take advantage of

24:52

24 minutes, 52 seconds

the free food and the free drinks, my friends. So, um and then tonight we had the little media thing where the Tampa

24:59

24 minutes, 59 seconds

Bay Lightning play. So, um so that that was nice. and they were giving out like little party prizes of like free cigars and stuff like that. So, it’s been nice.

25:08

25 minutes, 8 seconds

I’m actually sitting outside right now um outside of um uh Bayare Ballpark cuz I’m a big baseball guy. So, I got a

25:16

25 minutes, 16 seconds

chance to drive make the short drive over to Clear Water to see minor league baseball. So, um so you know. Well, well, Raymond, what what’s the one

25:24

25 minutes, 24 seconds

conversation that’s happening there that really matters that fans should really actually care about because there seems to be a lot of uh I don’t know, posturing going on.

25:36

25 minutes, 36 seconds

Well, I mean, look look uh at these events that’s that’s really what it’s about, right? It’s about, you know, not giving you anything and a lot of posturing, right? And and so you you

25:45

25 minutes, 45 seconds

kind of expect that. What I was surprised by and what’s been the big talking point is something I’ve been talking about on the radio and you guys

25:54

25 minutes, 54 seconds

have been probably talking about it on Tiger Rag Radio as well. This whole thing of it feels like the SEC, the Big

26:01

26 minutes, 1 second

10, and whoever they want to invite to their party are going to pull away from the NCAA for football only. Right.

26:09

26 minutes, 9 seconds

Right. And it’s you you feel it like we’ve been covering the sport long enough to know when we we can see how

26:16

26 minutes, 16 seconds

things are headed in a particular direction and it’s a billion-dollar industry. College football is there’s so much revenue from television that drives

26:24

26 minutes, 24 seconds

everything. All these decisions being made in football are driven by TV revenue. I mean that’s what it boils down to. So we’ve we’ve been seeing I’ve been talking about this for years. When

26:32

26 minutes, 32 seconds

I heard the commission, who’s very careful with his words, by the way, we know this, like Greg Fanky doesn’t say anything that he doesn’t want to be

26:40

26 minutes, 40 seconds

said, how he wants it to be said, and how he wants it to be delivered to the public. Okay? And when he goes up there in his opening address, he opens up

26:49

26 minutes, 49 seconds

media days and he mentions that, you know, there’s been real conversations had about them going out on their own

26:59

26 minutes, 59 seconds

and that, you know, he would prefer those conversations not be seen on the ticker the next day and everything else like that. Like that that stood out to

27:06

27 minutes, 6 seconds

me like that set the tone for this media days where Yeah, you’re right. Cuz often he would have like dispelled that rumor, but he he welcomed it. He welcomed it.

27:16

27 minutes, 16 seconds

Excellent.

27:16

27 minutes, 16 seconds

And he didn’t. And then so he puts that out there and you know I have him scheduled to come on the show on

27:24

27 minutes, 24 seconds

Thursday. So I’m going to ask him to follow up about that. Um um but then when you hear Kirby Smart this morning

27:32

27 minutes, 32 seconds

echo that sentiment and saying that this is something that he’s been talking about or wanting for a couple of years, that tells me that this is going to

27:41

27 minutes, 41 seconds

happen quicker than we thought it was going to happen. Like if if if the power brokers in the mighty SEC and the man

27:48

27 minutes, 48 seconds

who leads the most powerful conference in college athletics, if they’re having legitimate conversations about this and they’ve been doing it for years now and

27:57

27 minutes, 57 seconds

now they’re telling us about it, a room full of, you know, scoundrel, you know, scoundrels, you know, media folks. If they’re telling us all this, this tells

28:06

28 minutes, 6 seconds

me that I would I would go on a limb and say that there’s a framework already being put in place and I thought it was

28:13

28 minutes, 13 seconds

10 years away. I think by the time we get to the 2030s that SEC, Big 10, and whoever else they want to decide to

28:20

28 minutes, 20 seconds

bring to the party are going to have a football league that is not affiliated with the NCAA. And and the interesting thing about what you just said because we had a previous discussion in the

28:29

28 minutes, 29 seconds

first half hour of Tiger Rack Radio tonight and and Jeff had a coronary when I tried to explain to him that it’s possible it could be

28:36

28 minutes, 36 seconds

still could be leverage though. Might just be leverage.

28:39

28 minutes, 39 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. But it but it it could very possibly just like Raymond just said happening down the road. Yeah.

28:45

28 minutes, 45 seconds

Yeah. That’s what we’re talking about because that’s when the TV contracts expire. But whatever the point is is it could be football only. Could you

28:54

28 minutes, 54 seconds

explain that how it could be football only in your mind?

28:58

28 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, because football is the driving force for everything and the football you could, you know, I I bring this up all the time to folks. I go, do you ever

29:06

29 minutes, 6 seconds

notice when you look at the national championship trophy in football, whether it’s with the playoff or what was the BCS, you never noticed you don’t see the NCAA logo prominently placed anywhere, if at all?

29:16

29 minutes, 16 seconds

Yep. Yep.

29:16

29 minutes, 16 seconds

You know, that’s been going on for decades, right? It’s already separate, right? It’s already it already it already is separate. Now, they lean on

29:24

29 minutes, 24 seconds

the NCAA for a lot of things, right? Um but they believe that they have the amount of money to, you know, they use

29:31

29 minutes, 31 seconds

the lazy term, it’s been used out there in the last year or so. Well, NFL 2.0. I don’t think that’s what they want. Okay?

29:37

29 minutes, 37 seconds

They just want to run college football the way they want it run. You understand what I’m saying? So, they want to put in the rules that they want to put in for

29:46

29 minutes, 46 seconds

eligibility. They want to put in the rules that they want to put in for NIL.

29:49

29 minutes, 49 seconds

They want to put in the rules they want to for how many times a player can transfer, you know, uh, coaches salaries. They they uh, academic

29:56

29 minutes, 56 seconds

requirements, they want to they want to dictate and control all of that.

30:01

30 minutes, 1 second

But can they even agree on the rules, Raymond? They can’t. That’s why they went crawling to that’s why they went crawling to Congress to do that. And

30:10

30 minutes, 10 seconds

that’s correct. So there there is they I don’t think they are smart enough to pull it off without destroying

30:18

30 minutes, 18 seconds

they’re smart enough, Jeff. They’re smart enough. Their egos get in the way. And there’s a difference, right?

30:22

30 minutes, 22 seconds

Intelligence has nothing to do with your ego, right? Because everyone wants to believes that they’re right. What’s going to what has to happen to make this

30:31

30 minutes, 31 seconds

to expedite the process is that the SEC is going to have to get all their people on board and they’re going to have to have a unified approach to this and then

30:40

30 minutes, 40 seconds

they’re going to have to find a dance partner. And if they find a dance partner and we we assume it’s the Big 10 even though they they bicker about

30:47

30 minutes, 47 seconds

things already now, right? But but but let’s just say the SEC can they have talks with the Big 12 and the Big 12 says, you know, the exact way that

30:55

30 minutes, 55 seconds

you’re talking about doing things with NIL and transfer port on academic requirements and so forth and so forth and budgets and all this stuff, we’re on

31:02

31 minutes, 2 seconds

board. If the SEC can find a one league to be a dance parter, dance partner rather, then that kind of forces the

31:10

31 minutes, 10 seconds

others to kind of maybe compromise on what they want to do, right? Um that’s the messy part of this. That that is the one I agree with you. That’s the one

31:18

31 minutes, 18 seconds

hiccup on this. If the egos in the room from the Big 10, the Big 12, the SEC, and you would assume the ACC and Notre

31:25

31 minutes, 25 seconds

Dame. Um, if they all can put their egos aside to say this is what we really want to do because they really want to run

31:33

31 minutes, 33 seconds

college football because it’s the one that makes the most money. Look, you guys know this. Glenn reports on this. Tiger Rag reports on this, okay?

31:42

31 minutes, 42 seconds

Football, even when a football team is terrible, they make money. They make money handover fist. Okay. The other sports can’t say that. That’s true.

31:49

31 minutes, 49 seconds

So, so you know, you you know, people ask me on the street about this. They’re like, “Well, well, well, what about, you know, at LSU, what about women’s

31:57

31 minutes, 57 seconds

basketball?” And I go, “If they can make a ton of money and keep generating a ton of money, they’ll leave women’s basketball to just be governed by the

32:05

32 minutes, 5 seconds

like they don’t care about those other sports. Football is its own entity. It survives on its own. It just truly does.

32:13

32 minutes, 13 seconds

I mean, there’s a reason why every sports information department in this country primarily has one person

32:20

32 minutes, 20 seconds

dedicated for football. They’re not cross-pollinating the departments. Okay.

32:25

32 minutes, 25 seconds

Over at LSU, you get Kent Low. He helps out with football, helps out Bonnet, but he’s your primary men’s basketball, but Michael’s the one that runs the SID department for football.

32:34

32 minutes, 34 seconds

That’s true. That’s you understand what I’m saying?

32:36

32 minutes, 36 seconds

They’re already a separate entity as they as it is. And so they don’t care about that and they’ll let the rest of the sports be ran by the NCAA and that’s what they’ll do.

32:46

32 minutes, 46 seconds

So when it comes to the game itself, what was what’s the biggest news uh out there about the you know about the SEC right now?

32:55

32 minutes, 55 seconds

You know, there’s a lot of buzz surpris a couple things have surprised me about like I I keep hearing stuff about Josh Hypel being on the hot seat.

33:06

33 minutes, 6 seconds

Mhm.

33:06

33 minutes, 6 seconds

At Tennessee and I go, “Okay, y’all remember what Tennessee was before he got there, right?” Like you for for a

33:13

33 minutes, 13 seconds

good stretch, they weren’t very good. Do do you want Derek Douly back, right? Like is is that what you’re wanting?

33:20

33 minutes, 20 seconds

like you know you know what though the playoff two years ago but Raymond his winning percentage is worse than Brian Kelly’s but I I

33:29

33 minutes, 29 seconds

understand your point they they uh you know because of the bad coaches that

33:35

33 minutes, 35 seconds

that he came after he’s seen in some circles as pretty good okay like compared to Derek Doul and so forth

33:43

33 minutes, 43 seconds

but uh really there he’s been pretty average is how I see it and if he has another average type season like last

33:51

33 minutes, 51 seconds

year, he could be on the hot seat. May maybe not right now, but he could be.

33:54

33 minutes, 54 seconds

Not right now, but like a year out. And I I think I think that’s a fair point.

33:57

33 minutes, 57 seconds

You know, they have a big question mark at quarterback, too. How are they going to go with that?

34:01

34 minutes, 1 second

And he’s terrible at quarterbacks. He’s like a quarterback guru and he can’t get them. He can’t find them.

34:08

34 minutes, 8 seconds

He’s supposed to be. Yeah. He’s supposed to be the guru.

34:10

34 minutes, 10 seconds

But I was interesting like you know obviously Tennessee went day one but it was interesting that of course a lot of talk about Shane Beamer being on a hot

34:18

34 minutes, 18 seconds

seat but let me tell you the talk everyone every national person that’s walking through the hallways is making sure to even tell janitorial staff that

34:26

34 minutes, 26 seconds

they think Lane Kein should be winning a national championship or playing for one in year one. If not it’s a massive disappointment. And I just smile and I go really

34:35

34 minutes, 35 seconds

yeah. Hey Raymond thanks a lot man. We appreciate your time. Thanks for checking in from Tampa. We’ll have to get you on again soon.

34:42

34 minutes, 42 seconds

Anytime, brother. Y’all have a great show.

34:44

34 minutes, 44 seconds

All right, Raymond Parch from ESPN Southwest Radio. We’ll take a break.

34:48

34 minutes, 48 seconds

More of Tiger Rag Radio right after this. This is Tiger Rag Radio.

34:55

34 minutes, 55 seconds

They’re all the way back here on Tiger Rag Radio. Jeff Polmo along with Todd Horn and Glenn Gilbo. We were just

35:02

35 minutes, 2 seconds

talking uh Tennessee about Tennessee uh with Raymond Par from ESPN Southwest Radio in Lafayette and Lake Charles. So

35:11

35 minutes, 11 seconds

far uh case uh there there’s there’s two good clips that are up for I guess best sound bites of the week. Let’s hear the

35:19

35 minutes, 19 seconds

one about Josh Hypel and when asked about how Lane Keifin may be treated when he returns to Knoxville this time around.

35:28

35 minutes, 28 seconds

Certainly hope our fan base hasn’t uh cooled off. So, uh, you know, whether it’s the grocery stores, uh, being fully

35:35

35 minutes, 35 seconds

stocked with, uh, with mustard or, um, you know, our sports stores making sure that they got reinforcements on, uh, on the golf balls. Hopefully, Knoxville’s ready for for his arrival.

35:46

35 minutes, 46 seconds

Dead pan. Josh Hypel.

35:49

35 minutes, 49 seconds

Yeah, he’s trying to sell mustard and golf balls. [laughter] Hopes that keeps the special interest

35:56

35 minutes, 56 seconds

brokers there in Knoxville. SEC ought to find them for [laughter] for uh starting a riot.

36:03

36 minutes, 3 seconds

The SEC doesn’t enforce rules. I I I went over that in the first five minutes. Yeah. [laughter] Not against themselves.

36:09

36 minutes, 9 seconds

No, that’s for sure. They just Anyway, I don’t want to go back down that path, but that that was an interesting comment. I didn’t see that one coming from I I think it’s interesting. I also think

36:18

36 minutes, 18 seconds

it’s probably going to be uh there any mustard or golf balls that are going to be thrown are going to have to be thrown in the first or second quarter because I think it’s pretty much going to be over by then.

36:27

36 minutes, 27 seconds

Wow. Wow.

36:28

36 minutes, 28 seconds

And if and and if somebody throws a golf ball real far, Josh might try to sign him, but probably lose him [laughter] to lane.

36:37

36 minutes, 37 seconds

November 21st is when LSU is at Tennessee. It’ll probably be cold there.

36:42

36 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah, it could be. Could be. Last time LSU was at Tennessee, that was when that crazy rainstorm came and then Orzon was uh all he had was, you know, his typical

36:51

36 minutes, 51 seconds

polo shirt and it Did he take off his shirt?

36:56

36 minutes, 56 seconds

No, he did not. But he he was uh that was a that was a beating when was that in 2020 you’re talking about or 21?

37:03

37 minutes, 3 seconds

Was that an 18? Wasn’t it an 18? Oh, before the championship, I’m sorry.

37:07

37 minutes, 7 seconds

Yeah, I think it was an 18 was the last time they’ve been to Tennessee.

37:10

37 minutes, 10 seconds

Wow. Okay, that sounds about right. Yeah. Uh Will Stein, uh LSU facing Kentucky in October. Uh this uh this was an

37:18

37 minutes, 18 seconds

interesting soundbite from Will Stein on why he thinks the Wildcat football program can win and win at a high level. I think because of me to be honest.

37:27

37 minutes, 27 seconds

Because of [laughter] me. I think um I know what it takes. I have seen it at the highest levels. I know what it takes

37:34

37 minutes, 34 seconds

to recruit at this level. And you just got to believe, man. You just got to put the ball down and play.

37:40

37 minutes, 40 seconds

Wow. That’s interesting. That’s a different version of Clark Lee. Remember when [laughter] Clark Lee came out and said we’re going to contend for the national championship? And but but I tell you, he’s he’s sticking to it, man.

He’s done a lot better than people thought he would. Clark Lee is Vanderbilt’s coach, by the way. Uh, well, everybody knows that.

37:58

37 minutes, 58 seconds

Well, no, not everybody. Brian Kelly’s does. Yeah, Brian Kelly definitely does.

38:03

38 minutes, 3 seconds

But, uh, I like the moxy. I like, uh, you got to come in. Well, I would say my response has this kind of ego about him.

38:12

38 minutes, 12 seconds

So, it worked for him. Let’s see if it works.

38:14

38 minutes, 14 seconds

It’s good. I I think he should have an ego. I think he should have confidence.

38:17

38 minutes, 17 seconds

And I think he should have hired a different offensive coordinator.

38:21

38 minutes, 21 seconds

[laughter]

38:21

38 minutes, 21 seconds

You did start. You did smirk right when you heard that, as did I. But I thought it was a pretty cool comment. I I tell you though, none better than this is

38:30

38 minutes, 30 seconds

going way back for you young boys can can remember, but in the 19 it was the 1985

38:39

38 minutes, 39 seconds

or 86 SEC media days in Birmingham, Emry Bard was the coach at Mississippi State and he came out and said, “We’re going

38:47

38 minutes, 47 seconds

to win the SEC.” [snorts] I mean, and everybody and I think he got fired that year.

38:53

38 minutes, 53 seconds

Um, Kucky’s quarterback, uh, he talked about Joe Sloan as his offensive coordinator, and Case has got a sound bite on that.

39:01

39 minutes, 1 second

He’s one of the main reasons that I’m that I’m at Kentucky. Kind of like Stein, he’s a great great guy, great person to be around, a lot of energy,

39:10

39 minutes, 10 seconds

and he loves football and obviously really smart. He’s coached some really some really good quarterbacks in the past, and he knows what he’s doing. That

39:17

39 minutes, 17 seconds

is Kenny Mincchy who is the Notre Dame transfer that’s now the starting quarterback at Kentucky. That sounded a lot like Garrett Nusmire. Those are things you would say about

39:24

39 minutes, 24 seconds

Well, here’s here’s some advice to Kenny. Don’t let him call [laughter] plays and and and Garrett’s on the phone to Kenny. Transfer [laughter] transfer the next window.

39:37

39 minutes, 37 seconds

Uh all right, let’s take a break. More uh we’ll wrap up hour number one. A lively hour number one. Chris Gordy will join us. Lockdown SEC podcast host

39:46

39 minutes, 46 seconds

coming up in the next hour. Also, Dan Zaksheski. I think I’m saying that right. Dan Zachesky.

39:53

39 minutes, 53 seconds

Dan Zack Schesky. He will join us. Talk about Ryan Clark being let go at ESPN along with several other prominent onair

40:00

40 minutes

people over at ESPN, including Carl Ravage, who’s been calling SEC men’s basketball and of course calling games at the College World Series. He was let

40:09

40 minutes, 9 seconds

go today as well. So, we’ll take Yeah, he’s a good one, too.

40:11

40 minutes, 11 seconds

We’ll take a break. More of Tiger Rag Radio after this. How you doing? This is Snoop Dog. Tiger Rag. Tiger Rag Radio.

40:19

40 minutes, 19 seconds

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, you are tuned in.

40:22

40 minutes, 22 seconds

Talk LSU sports interviews, opinions, and new calls around the Tiger Nation.

40:27

40 minutes, 27 seconds

Batt Road was a life for me. Home of LSU Tigers. Now, more Tiger Rag Radio.

40:32

40 minutes, 32 seconds

Love to score and get highlights and championships and play to win.

40:34

40 minutes, 34 seconds

Tiger Rag Radio. All right, back here on Tiger Eag Radio, we uh spent the first hour talking a lot about the comments of

40:42

40 minutes, 42 seconds

uh Greg Seni and the legislation that they are seeking out of Congress. Uh there has been a development about that

40:50

40 minutes, 50 seconds

uh right actually probably uh broke when we were on the air. Uh, Senator Tommy Tuberville, of course, the former head

40:58

40 minutes, 58 seconds

football coach at Auburn and Old Miss, has sent a memo to Republican legislative directors today, and he is

41:05

41 minutes, 5 seconds

telling them to oppose the Protect College Sports Act and instead approve a bill that only regulates

41:14

41 minutes, 14 seconds

eligibility, basically the five for five. you got five years to play five years and the one-time exception for

41:22

41 minutes, 22 seconds

transfers where you can transfer once without having to sit out. And then he says the legislation would also restore

41:30

41 minutes, 30 seconds

enforcement. So nothing about pulling media rights, nothing about trying to limit conference expansion,

41:39

41 minutes, 39 seconds

just the bare bones. Basically, this is what SEC Commissioner Greg Sanki is looking for.

41:47

41 minutes, 47 seconds

Well, I’m sure he uh Tommy has some allegiances to the uh to the SEC. Spent most of his

41:54

41 minutes, 54 seconds

career there. So, um that’s probably a smart move by the SEC if Sanki orchestrated that. I’m sure he had something

42:02

42 minutes, 2 seconds

to do with it. Um why why and you think ju just trying to um maybe push the

42:10

42 minutes, 10 seconds

media pool argument to next year or to just keep them out of it or keep them out of it for right now. Right. Right.

42:16

42 minutes, 16 seconds

And uh he does say and I read a little bit of the letter there during the break. He says college athletics does not need a

42:24

42 minutes, 24 seconds

federal takeover. They don’t need all these kind of this is the the thing that but yet they’re the ones that went into it. That that’s what gets me. Sanki and

42:33

42 minutes, 33 seconds

Petiti went into it. Now they’re saying, “Oh, wow.” Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah. All right. So, uh, we’ll keep our eye on that. Chris

42:41

42 minutes, 41 seconds

Gordy from Locked On SEC podcast, the host of that show that you can download every day, uh, Monday through Friday. He

42:49

42 minutes, 49 seconds

will join us when we come back. So, stay tuned for that as we got to take a break for the top of the hour break. This is Tiger Rag Radio. Thanks for listening.
