Reports: LSU hires Tasmin Mitchell as new assistant basketball coach

Former LSU player Tasmin Mitchell will remain a member of the new LSU coaching staff in the role as special assistant to head coach Matt McMahon.

LSU has found a replacement for Tony Benford, and it didn’t have to look very far.

Tasmin Mitchell, the former LSU forward who helped lead the Tigers to the Final Four in 2006 and served as Will Wade’s director of student-athlete development last season, has been promoted to the role of assistant coach, Wade reportedly said when speaking with a pool of reporters on Wednesday at the SEC Coaches Meetings in Destin, Fla.

As a result of the moves, assistant Greg Heiar has also moved up to associate head coach under Wade.

Mitchell replaces Benford, who was originally Wade’s first hire after arriving in Baton Rouge. After serving as LSU’s interim head coach during Wade’s suspension during the 2018-19 postseason, Benford left the program to take a job as an assistant at TCU, reportedly to get closer to family.
