Ole Miss All-American running back Kewan Lacy is expected to be fine for the No. 9 Rebels’ game against No. 11 LSU on Sept. 19 at Ole Miss after leaving the Louisville game Sunday night with a thigh injury.
“It was not anything serious,” Ole Miss first-year head coach Pete Golding said after his Rebels beat No. 24 Louisville, 41-38, on a 48-yard field goal by Lucas Carneiro as time expired at the Music City Kickoff in Nashville.
Lacy, a junior who finished third in the nation in 2025 with an Ole Miss record 1,567 yards on 306 carries, gained 61 yards on 17 carries with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 10-3 lead in the second quarter on Sunday. But Lacy (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) left the game in the third quarter.
A transfer from Missouri after the 2024 season, Lacy gained 87 yards on 23 carries with a 15-yard touchdown run in Ole Miss’ 24-19 win over LSU in Oxford, Mississippi, last season.
Former LSU running back JT Lindsey of Alexandria played for the Rebels Sunday and gained 25 yards on seven carries. Lindsey (5-11, 190) was a true freshman at LSU last season from Alexandria Senior High, but did not play and transferred to Ole Miss last January. Lindsey was arrested last year while at LSU on felony accessory to murder charges for housing two murder suspects at his residence. The chargers were later dropped.
Junior Makhi Frazier, a junior transfer from Michigan State after last season, gained 27 yards on seven carries for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss (1-0) hosts Charlotte (0-1) on Saturday (6:45 p.m., ESPN2). LSU (1-0) hosts Louisiana Tech (1-0) on Saturday (6:30 p.m., SEC Network+).
Ole Miss and LSU will meet on Sept. 19 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford at 6:30 p.m. on ABC as former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin returns as LSU’s head coach.
Kiffin and LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., who came with Kiffin from Ole Miss, recruited and signed Lacy at Ole Miss along with quarterback Trinidad Chambliss from Division II Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan, before the 2025 season.
Chambliss completed 21 of 36 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in the win over Louisville. He threw a pair of 62-yard touchdowns to wide receiver Deuce Alexander, whom Kiffin also signed as a transfer from Wake Forest after the 2024 season, and a 35-yard touchdown to tight end Caleb Odom, whom Kiffin signed as a transfer from Alabama after the 2024 season. Chambliss added 60 rushing yhards on nine carries with a 5-yard touchdown for a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter.
Ole Miss put up 488 yards of offense, but Golding – the former Ole Miss defensive coordinator who replaced Kiffin after the regular season when Kiffin became LSU’s coach – saw his defense allow 469 total yards in the game and 32 points in the second half. Louisville quarterback Lincoln Kienholz completed 18 of 29 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 14 times for 69 yards with a touchdown.
In Golding’s College Football Playoff wins over Tulane (41-10) and Georgia (39-34) last season, his defense allowed 421 and 343 yards, respectively. Miami beat Ole Miss in a CFP semifinal, 31-27, with 459 yards of offense.
Will Golding and new Ole Miss defensive coordinator Bryan Brown be ready for Kiffin’s and Weis’ offense? The Tigers put up 644 yards in the 51-10 win over No. 23 Clemson on Saturday, including an LSU record 38 first downs and 309 rushing yards – LSU’s most since gaining 329 on the ground in a 52-35 win over over Florida on Nov. 11, 2023.
