Like most college football players, Florida wide receiver Eugene “Tre” Wilson III did not follow college football in the news as much as fans.
And he did not know all that much about his new coach at LSU, Lane Kiffin, when he transferred to the Tigers last January. But it did not take long.
“Once I landed here, I could really see how much of a go-getter and how deep Lane Kiffin and the rest of the staff are about winning,” Wilson said during player interviews on Tuesday after the Tigers’ practice. “Like, they’re very passionate about everything they do. Not even just about winning, but creating good habits in everyday life and creating good men in the facility.”
Wilson, who caught 27 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns last season for Florida before a high ankle sprain ended his season after eight games, also didn’t realize how fast Kiffin’s offenses go and get it.
“I thought a lot of practices were fast when I first got to college (at Florida),” he said. “But once I got here, there were really levels to it. The walk-throughs were fast, but in practice, it goes to even another faster level.”
Wilson became known for his quickness at Florida as he caught 61 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman in 2023 out of Gaither High in Tampa, Florida, where he was the No. 16 receiver in the nation and 109 prospect. In a 52-35 loss at LSU in 2023, Wilson caught six passes for 63 yards with a 9-yard touchdown. He caught two passes for 10 yards in a 20-10 loss at LSU last year.
A hip injury and surgery limited him to four games in 2024 (19 catches for 266 yards).
“It feels great knowing I’m going to be on the other sideline for LSU,” Williams said of the 2026 season. “Can’t wait for it.”
No. 11 LSU opens the season against No. 23 Clemson on Sept. 5 in Tiger Stadium (6:30 p.m., ABC).
The battles for playing time in the receiver rotation continues on the LSU practice field as Kiffin brought in nine receivers from the portal in all.
“Yeah, just a bunch of guys going out there doing what they love every day,” Wilson said. “He grabbed guys across the country who can go out there and ball and make plays. And everybody brings their own type of talent and skill to the team. It’s going to be a fun show to watch for sure.”
