A historic weekend of college football shook up the Associated Press top 25. For the first time in the 90-year history of the poll, five of the top eight teams fell on the same day, but LSU was only able to benefit four spots from the reaping, moving up to No. 18 after beating No. 16 Mississippi State 31-0. The Bulldogs fell out of the rankings.
The Tigers (5-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) will visit an Auburn (4-2, 2-2 SEC) team coming off a shocking 27-24 win at No. 1 Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC) on Saturday (11 a.m.). Auburn remained unranked but received votes as the third team outside the top 25.
Georgia fell to No. 5 while Miami (6-0) took over the top spot following its 43-35 overtime win over Florida State. No. 2 Notre Dame also fell to No. 4 after losing 28-24 to BYU. The Cougars jumped six spots to No. 2 with the win. Ohio State (6-1) moved up one spot to third following its 19-15 road win over Indiana (6-1). The Hoosiers dropped to No. 6.
Two of LSU’s November opponents, Alabama (Nov. 7) and Texas (Nov. 14), fell out of the top 10 after upset conference losses. The Crimson Tide (5-2, 3-2 SEC) was stemmed by Tennessee (6-1, 3-1 SEC) in a 26-10 loss to the Volunteers. Alabama dropped seven spots to No. 13, and Tennessee, who LSU visits on Nov. 21, rose from No. 14 to No. 11. Seventh-ranked Texas (4-2, 1-2 SEC) lost a second straight and fell to No. 19 after losing 27-24 to Florida (5-2, 3-2 SEC). The Gators returned to the rankings and landed one spot behind the team they just beat at No. 20.
Ole Miss (5-1, 3-1 SEC), Texas Tech (6-0), UCLA (6-0) and Utah (6-0) shifted up to fill out the rest of the top 10. Kentucky (6-1, 3-1) is No. 12, Houston (6-1) is No. 14, Iowa (5-1) is No. 15, USC (6-1) is No. 16 and Wake Forest (6-1) is No. 17.
The final five spots in the top 25 are taken by Boise State (5-1), Missouri (5-2), SMU (5-1), Northwestern (5-1) and Arizona (5-1).
