LSU quarterback Danny Etling undergoes back surgery

Danny Etling underwent surgery for an injury on his back this weekend, Ed Orgeron confirmed in a statement Monday.

“Danny had a minor back procedure this morning and everything came out alright,” Orgeron said.

Etling completed 4-of-11 passes for 53 yards in Saturday’s Spring Game, missing the mark on his last seven attempts and tossing an interception. He, nor any other Tiger QB, was not in a green non-contact jersey, as has been customary for LSU’s quarterbacks in recent years.

After the game, Orgeron was adamant that the quarterback job remained up for grabs.

“Here is the deal. Nobody has earned the starting spot and you saw that tonight,” Orgeron said. “If we had to name a starter tonight it is not a clear-cut winner. Most of the spring Danny has been better. Underneath the pressure, the guys did not perform the way we wanted them to, so they are going to have to show me who is able to perform under pressure to be the LSU quarterback.”

The senior tossed for 2,123 yards and 11 scores a season ago after taking over for Brandon Harris five quarters into the 2016 campaign.
