LSU was without infielders Trent Caraway and Brayden Simpson in Friday’s 7-5 win at Tennessee after LSU coach Jay Johnson listed each as “out” on the LSU availability report to the Southeastern Conference office.

Caraway missed because of an illness, and Simpson has a hand injury. Caraway made the trip and could be available for the Tigers’ 5 p.m. game on Saturday against Tennessee.

“I don’t know if it’s food poisoning or something,” Johnson said after the game. “He wasn’t able to practice yesterday, and he wasn’t able to come to the game tonight. Trainers have been doing a good job with him, trying to keep him hydrated, making sure he has his medicine. But he didn’t feel good enough to come. I don’t know exactly what we’ve got to reboot, as far as, is it just hydration? Is it energy? Probably got to get him up and moving around a little bit because it’s been a couple of days.”

Caraway, a junior transfer from Oregon State, did not play in the Tigers’ last three games going into Friday. He last played last Friday at second base against Kentucky, going 0-for-2. He is hitting .257 on the season (18-for-70) with two home runs and 15 RBis with five stolen bases in six attempts. He has played in 26 of the Tigers’ 29 games with 24 starts.

Simpson, a senior transfer from High Point, has not played a lot on the season. He last played on Sunday as a designated hitter, going 0-for-1 against Kentucky. He is hitting .280 (7-for-25) with five RBIs in 15 games with 12 starts.

Both Caraway and Simpson have been replaced in the lineup often in recent weeks with John Pearson at third base and Seth Dardar and second base.

LSU junior transfer (Kansas) starting pitcher Cooper Moore (3-3, 3.38 ERA) is also out, but Johnson reported two weeks ago that Moore would miss time with triceps soreness. He has a chance to make the trip next weekend to Ole Miss, Johnson said.
