Junior right-hander Gavin Guidry will start Sunday’s series deciding game against Tennessee after not winning a game since Feb. 27 against Dartmouth.

Guidry (3-3, 6.64 ERA) has not been able to return to his form of 2023 and ’24 over his last six appearances. In his last two games, he allowed eight runs on five hits with eight walks in four and two-thirds innings.

So, he is due, you might say. Tennessee (20-11, 4-7 Southeastern Conference) will throw senior left-hander Evan Bianco (2-2, 4.00 ERA) against the Tigers (21-11, 5-6 SEC). First pitch is at noon on SEC Network+.

Guidry may just need to go two or three innings, though, as the Tigers have not yet used senior right-handed reliever Zac Cowan (1-0, 4.38 ERA, 1 save) this weekend in the 7-5 win Friday or the 4-1 loss Saturday. And Cowan is coming off his best game of the season – a one-hit shutout of Kentucky last weekend in relief over three and two-thirds innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. The Tigers will also have virtually all of their relief staff ready.

“I think he pitched better than at any point here,” Johnson said of Cowan’s last appearance. And remember, he was 3-3 last year with a 2.94 ERA and six saves – five of those in SEC play.

But if LSU is to take this series, it will likely have to hit better than it did in a 4-1 loss on Saturday as it was held to five and zero after the fifth inning.

“The pitchers did their job,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said after the game. “Got to do a little more offensively.”

The Tigers left the bases loaded in the second inning and two in scoring position in the fifth inning, and LSU’s last 15 hitters were retired in order.
