LSU regular starting quarterback Sam Leavitt started Saturday night’s game against McNeese State at Tiger Stadium.

There were expectations that Leavitt may not play as the No. 11 Tigers (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) are 52-point favorites over the Cowboys (2-3, 1-2 Southland Conference) and Leavitt is nursing a hamstring injury suffered last week in the second quarter in the 35-6 home win over Texas A&M.

Leavitt, an excellent runner and scrambler, did play for more than two quarters after the injury last week, though he usually stayed in the pocket. Backup quarterback Landen Clark played a lot for Leavitt after the injury in short yardage situations, gaining 41 yards on nine carries and going 0-for-5 passing with two drops.

On his first drive, Leavitt completed 3 of 3 passes for 20 yards – four yards, 10 yards then six yards. The Tigers took a 7-0 lead on a nine-play drive in 48 yards set up by an interception by safety Tamarcus Cooley.

Clark, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Elon, is expected to play much of tonight’s game with No .3 quarterback Husan Longstreet, a redshirt freshman from USC, also expected to play.

On Leavitt’s second drive of the game, he directed a 77-yard touchdown drive in 12 plays for a 14-0 lead with 3:18 to go in the first quarter. He threw a 1-yard touchdown to new tight end Roman Mothershed, who just moved to the position from wide receiver last week with the injury to starting tight end Trey’Dez Green at Ole Miss on Sept. 19. Green (knee) is expected in back at some point this season.

Safety Ty Benefield started his second consecutive game at the star position for Dashawn Spears, who was lost for the season with a knee injury at Ole Miss two weeks ago. Jhase Thomas started for the second straight week at Benefield’s safety spot opposite Cooley.

William Satterwhite II started for the second straight week at left guard over Bo Bordelon, who started the first three games.
