Tiger Rag breaks down how the Tigers’ defense and offensive line let down LSU in its loss to Ole Miss and discuss whether quarterback Sam Leavitt’s performance is a cause for real concern for LSU moving forward. WBRZ’s Michael Cauble joins the show to share his experience from the sideline in Oxford, Mississippi.

Players are better people than they are players. This is Tiger Rag Radio and good evening everyone. Welcome to

1:02

another edition of Tiger Rag Radio. Jeff Polmo, news and sports director of Louisiana Radio Network along with the executive editor for Tiger Rag Magazine.

1:12

1 minute, 12 seconds

Todd Horn, the editor, Glenn Gilbo, and Tiger Rag and Louisiana Radio Network reporter, Case Kishnik, who is our

1:21

1 minute, 21 seconds

producer for tonight’s show. Lot to get to here over the next couple of hours.

1:26

1 minute, 26 seconds

Obviously, we got to recap what happened Saturday in Oxford. Look ahead to what will happen Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. To help us do that, Dave Wilson

1:34

1 minute, 34 seconds

of ESPN, who covers the Aggies and Texas, he’ll join us a little bit later on in the show to uh give us his

1:41

1 minute, 41 seconds

thoughts. We’re also going to hear from uh Michael Cobbell as well. And then John Tolty, who has written a biography on Lane Kein, Lane being Lane. He will

1:50

1 minute, 50 seconds

join us in hour number two. Uh but as I mentioned, a lot to get to. Will Wade speaks tomorrow. In fact, Will Wade and

1:58

1 minute, 58 seconds

Lane Keifin could be speaking at the very same time, which I think the LSU universe will explode when that happens because Lane Keifin makes another

2:06

2 minutes, 6 seconds

appearance on the SEC coaches teleconference. And then Will Weey tells us about the four players that he’s got on his roster. So, we look forward to that tomorrow afternoon.

2:15

2 minutes, 15 seconds

There’s more than four. [laughter] I look at the website. There’s only four.

2:20

2 minutes, 20 seconds

It It is going to be interesting. We keep we’ve heard him more on the lead into the radio show than we’ve [laughter] heard from him since March.

2:26

2 minutes, 26 seconds

Yeah. Right. And uh uh to on a serious note, we’ll also talk about a serious

2:33

2 minutes, 33 seconds

allegation being made involving uh what could be a current could be a former LSU player, football player, where a woman

2:41

2 minutes, 41 seconds

has come out and said that she was raped by an LSU football player last year. And the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s

2:48

2 minutes, 48 seconds

Office has launched an investigation into that. We’ll get into that touchy subject and a difficult subject to cover a little bit later on in the show, but we’ll start with the LSC Old Miss game.

Chapter 2: LSU vs. Ole Miss recap

2:59

2 minutes, 59 seconds

Uh Glenn, you were there. You’ve covered countless SEC games. Where does that one stack up as far as the environment and

3:07

3 minutes, 7 seconds

just the the hostility that LSU was shown uh in that game?

3:14

3 minutes, 14 seconds

Yeah, it’s it’s it’s up there. But, you know, I I think some LSU Alabama games I I covered were kind of like that. Kind

3:21

3 minutes, 21 seconds

of like the one in 2008 in in Baton Rouge. And and um as far as just a hugely significant

3:29

3 minutes, 29 seconds

game, the 2003 LSU Miss game, although I was not at that game because I got sick the week of and I had to watch it on TV

3:37

3 minutes, 37 seconds

really. And the doctor I saw was Nacho Albergamo. I blame him, but not not really. [laughter] Circumstantial. What were you wearing

3:46

3 minutes, 46 seconds

um when you went to the doctor to see Nacho Albagama? What does that have to do with anything? It’s just such a detailed memory so far.

3:53

3 minutes, 53 seconds

[laughter]

3:54

3 minutes, 54 seconds

Just I don’t think I was wearing a a navy blue golf uh shirt. Uh no, but it was it was an awesome atmosphere. I mean, the

4:01

4 minutes, 1 second

pregame was really it was so hot and crowded everywhere and I was in the Grove and I compared it to Bruce Springsteen at the Jazz Fest in 2012.

4:12

4 minutes, 12 seconds

You literally couldn’t move while he was playing. And I mean it it was it was packed. And there was a little bit of LSU and Old Miss guys yelling at each

4:20

4 minutes, 20 seconds

other. It was funny. The the LSU PL fans were walking through this walkway and there were Old Miss fans kind of behind a barricade. So they were yelling at

4:29

4 minutes, 29 seconds

each other. That was pretty wild. And let me tell you, those those Old Miss co-eds are all dressed up for tailgating more so than most schools. But they can

4:37

4 minutes, 37 seconds

still cuss. [laughter] Let me tell you, man. So can Trinidad Chamblas as we found out in the postgame interview.

4:44

4 minutes, 44 seconds

Yes, he can. That was after talking about God all the time.

4:46

4 minutes, 46 seconds

But it was a great game. I mean, it was it was, you know, it was it was a great game. You know, he had a big comeback by LSU and it was very thrilling as it as it came to a climax.

4:55

4 minutes, 55 seconds

Todd, your thoughts on the game?

4:58

4 minutes, 58 seconds

Uh, I thought LSU’s defense really let him down. I thought LSU’s offensive line was horrible. Uh, I thought that LSU’s defense in the first half let him down.

5:09

5 minutes, 9 seconds

I thought LSU’s defense in the second half got them back into the game playing like they could play and I I really think it was a scheme problem in the first half.

5:18

5 minutes, 18 seconds

Case, what’s your reactions to the game?

5:20

5 minutes, 20 seconds

Yeah, I mean I don’t think you can go any further than the offensive line. You know, I I think it’s hard to say it was all on the LSU defense just because of how bad

5:29

5 minutes, 29 seconds

the offense was in the first half with the exception of one drive. Um, but you know, in case you don’t think you don’t think half a second is enough time to be able

5:38

5 minutes, 38 seconds

to throw the ball, [laughter] I I don’t know why Levit didn’t just stand in the pocket and make it work. I don’t understand. [laughter]

5:45

5 minutes, 45 seconds

So, how big of a concern or can they fix this offensive line? I mean, what I is this going to once again, this unit,

5:55

5 minutes, 55 seconds

derail a season or prevent a this team that has talent from getting to where it thinks it can get. You know what’s

6:03

6 minutes, 3 seconds

amazing about the offensive line issues and you can see him, but Dylan Jones is fourth in the SEC in rushing, 25th in in

6:10

6 minutes, 10 seconds

the nation. And that says how good a back he is cuz maybe he doesn’t need as much blocking and and that it’s good that they run him. But it’s not like

6:18

6 minutes, 18 seconds

they’re a terrible offensive line like the previous years cuz they’re still putting up a nice running game. Yes.

6:26

6 minutes, 26 seconds

But uh but Sam has been sacked seven times and and sacks not always a good stat. He’s he’s very hurried and you and

6:34

6 minutes, 34 seconds

like Lane said, you can tell he’s kind of worried as the game goes on if you start getting pressured early. So, they got they got to get better. I I think they need to move some people around.

6:44

6 minutes, 44 seconds

I I agree that they’re better than last year’s offensive line in terms of the running game, but they do have a good running game.

6:51

6 minutes, 51 seconds

I think that compresses it to No, I don’t think it’s a good running game. I think Dylan Jones is a good running back.

6:57

6 minutes, 57 seconds

Okay. I think that uh whenever you have a third and one at the two yardd line or three yardd line or whatever it was and

7:05

7 minutes, 5 seconds

you snap it directly to the back and he gets sacked for a two- yard loss. I think that’s uh that’s pretty bad. That’s not any trench help at all.

7:14

7 minutes, 14 seconds

And they’ve had trouble in short runs all season at the goal line.

7:19

7 minutes, 19 seconds

Potential replacements. I mean Shawn Tomkins, this is the commitment or the offensive lineman you got from Baylor.

7:26

7 minutes, 26 seconds

Devin Harper, he was thought of as a guy that was expected to start at guard. Uh William Satderwite, he’s played SEC football

7:36

7 minutes, 36 seconds

before. Uh can we anticipate seeing any of those guys in this game against Texas A&M?

7:41

7 minutes, 41 seconds

Well, well, Tomkins played for Davis a lot Saturday.

7:44

7 minutes, 44 seconds

No, he only played three plays. I I thought he would have played more, but whenever I looked at the the snap counts, it was only three. Um so Davis went back in there that much.

7:54

7 minutes, 54 seconds

Yeah, Davis scored a a graded out at a 49 I think it was overall, which was And you’re talking about Pro Football Focus grades.

8:02

8 minutes, 2 seconds

Yeah, grades. Um, and you know, Bo Borlon had a probably the lowest score in the history of Pro Football Focus grades at a 12.6 for fast blocking.

8:13

8 minutes, 13 seconds

Yeah.

8:14

8 minutes, 14 seconds

Um, he was on Eckles and he he was Yeah. He was right next to, of course, the $5 million man or

8:21

8 minutes, 21 seconds

$4.5 million man or the $4 million man, whatever Jordan Seat’s made.

8:26

8 minutes, 26 seconds

He’s now a $3 million man after that game. [laughter] Yeah.

8:29

8 minutes, 29 seconds

Jordan Seat hasn’t been as dominant as you thought. He wasn’t in that game. Yeah. Yeah. Not in that game.

8:36

8 minutes, 36 seconds

So, obviously the problems on the offensive line contributing to Sam Levit’s issues.

8:42

8 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah. I still I’m sorry that [snorts] I I know that’s something we need to talk about because I think that’s very real and Lane’s talked a lot about it this

8:50

8 minutes, 50 seconds

week, but I I still think that the defense in the first half if they would have played like they did in the second half and they would have been more aggressive that it would not have been a

8:59

8 minutes, 59 seconds

24-7 score regardless of how poorest the offensive line was.

9:03

9 minutes, 3 seconds

Right. And that’s kind of what we said going into the season, the defense has got to hold them up until they can get it together and they didn’t. Right.

9:09

9 minutes, 9 seconds

I think the idea was, and Lane talked about it on Sunday, was they just wanted to prevent the big play. They didn’t

9:18

9 minutes, 18 seconds

want they sounded like they wanted to try to keep everything in front of them because they just knew obviously how dangerous Trinidad Chamblas.

9:26

9 minutes, 26 seconds

Well, and and to their to the their credit, Chamblas did not beat him by running in the first half. He only had, I think, two yards rushing in the first

9:34

9 minutes, 34 seconds

half, but but he tore him up. And and has PJ Woodland found anybody to cover yet?

9:42

9 minutes, 42 seconds

So, I went into this game. I I think uh I think we all maybe picked LSU, right? Am I wrong? No. No. I I picked Miss to win 24-20.

9:51

9 minutes, 51 seconds

No, you did not. Yeah.

9:52

9 minutes, 52 seconds

It’s in the It’s on the It was on the the board that you had Old Miss. Uh that was that was on the uh on the radio

10:00

10 minutes

show in [laughter] the magazine. in the magazine and all summer I picked old miss tomorrow. So, let me get this straight.

10:08

10 minutes, 8 seconds

Two out of three. [laughter] If you pick two out of three, if you pick one one way and one the other way, then you can say you picked the No, no, that that’s if you just do two.

10:15

10 minutes, 15 seconds

But I picked three and twice I picked Miss to win.

10:19

10 minutes, 19 seconds

I picked Miss to win four. I had a brain uh seizure when I picked LSU with caught me off guard. Let me give you a minute.

10:28

10 minutes, 28 seconds

I picked Miss It’s in Okay, I got you. [laughter] 24.

10:32

10 minutes, 32 seconds

I got you. You picked it both ways and you get two out of three you picked there. [laughter] Three out of three ain’t bad. 66%.

10:39

10 minutes, 39 seconds

All right. I have to do a me a couple because I actually thought that the LSU defense would show up. Yeah.

10:45

10 minutes, 45 seconds

I I I did think that LSU’s offense would be able to move the ball better than they did. I did think that Sam Levit would have more than half a second to

10:54

10 minutes, 54 seconds

retrieve the snap from the shotgun and and then be able to blink maybe once before he was under siege. But I really

11:02

11 minutes, 2 seconds

did think that what would happen in that game was that Miss would be filled with emotion. LSU would contain Trinidad Shamless

11:11

11 minutes, 11 seconds

and that LSU would fall behind early and then come back and blow him out in the second half.

11:16

11 minutes, 16 seconds

That’s what I thought was going to happen. Jimmy Manasse kind of thought that too. Sorry, Jimmy.

11:22

11 minutes, 22 seconds

Now, my thought was going into the game, yes, Trinidad Chamblas, they had the better quarterback. Uh, they had the home field advantage and the emotion,

11:30

11 minutes, 30 seconds

but the feeling was that LSU had the better roster and the better coaches.

11:37

11 minutes, 37 seconds

And I still think Lane Keifin’s a better coach than Pete Golding. Yeah.

11:42

11 minutes, 42 seconds

And Blake Baker, I think, is a is a good defensive coordinator. Not great.

11:48

11 minutes, 48 seconds

Not Yeah. can’t put the great label on them, but watching at least for 60 minutes. And granted, Miss had all that emotion and they had the fans behind

11:56

11 minutes, 56 seconds

them. I I came away looking at it, no, I I think maybe Miss has got the better roster. They got the better offensive line. They got the better receivers.

12:06

12 minutes, 6 seconds

Uh their defensive playing together, that’s the key.

12:09

12 minutes, 9 seconds

Their defensive secondary, everybody thought that, oh, they’re going to be just horrible, but they were getting two

12:15

12 minutes, 15 seconds

players back. Uh Safir Densen was one of them and he ended up leading the team in tackles that night. Uh Antonio Kite was

12:24

12 minutes, 24 seconds

the other and they just looked like the better team.

12:28

12 minutes, 28 seconds

They won the game in the on the on the lines. They they won the game. They they dominated LSU for two quarters, first

12:37

12 minutes, 37 seconds

two quarters on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in the trenches. That’s what they did. that they just dominated and LSU really and

12:47

12 minutes, 47 seconds

truly could not cover anybody and Chambless picked them apart. I mean, that’s all. And I think that the fact

12:54

12 minutes, 54 seconds

that that Baker, Blake Baker was able to make the adjustments in the second half by being more aggressive and putting

13:02

13 minutes, 2 seconds

more pressure and forcing while still containing Chamblas, but forcing him to make mistakes and sacking him and

13:10

13 minutes, 10 seconds

putting the pressure on. That’s the game plan they should have. I I I blame their game plan defensively at the

13:19

13 minutes, 19 seconds

start. Now, I agree with what Case said about the offensive line just being horrible because they were. But still,

13:26

13 minutes, 26 seconds

Chamblas couldn’t score on the offensive LSU’s offensive line. What do you got, Case?

13:30

13 minutes, 30 seconds

I mean, Chamblas couldn’t score on LSU’s defense.

13:32

13 minutes, 32 seconds

Offensive line. No, he couldn’t score on LSU’s offensive line. The offensive line didn’t lead to Chamblas tearing them up.

13:38

13 minutes, 38 seconds

Oh, okay. You know, it was funny when when we had the power outage last week at the library and that that affected my pick. [laughter]

13:46

13 minutes, 46 seconds

We we said that Todd picked 31. When Todd wasn’t with us, we said, “Okay, well, we got to have somebody picking LSU. We got to have somebody picking Old

13:54

13 minutes, 54 seconds

Miss.” So, we said 317 and it was 24/7 at [laughter] the half. I was thinking, damn, Todd’s going to get this right.

14:01

14 minutes, 1 second

And Todd never said that. So, well, we we put it in your I know you put it in there, but I never obvious that you didn’t say it.

14:08

14 minutes, 8 seconds

Well, I know. I know. But I just wanted take us to court. We’ll get [laughter] Greg Sanki and we’ll get a TTRO. We said that you didn’t say it.

14:16

14 minutes, 16 seconds

Greg Sanki can’t get a TTRO. That’s [laughter] his problem. Uh but the the the biggest thing I’m trying to say is I really didn’t say that. I would love to

14:24

14 minutes, 24 seconds

be like you and and say, “Yeah, I predicted that since you put it in my mouth, but I can’t predict it. I predicted it more.” All right, case you

14:31

14 minutes, 31 seconds

had something of relevance to say. Yeah, bring us back to think Matt McMahon was [laughter] coming back.

14:38

14 minutes, 38 seconds

The the miss secondary, you know, was the big question mark for them and then they kind of did what LSU was able to do in the first two weeks where their

14:45

14 minutes, 45 seconds

secondary didn’t matter. The receivers were open at times. Levit just couldn’t get the ball to them because of that defensive line. And then Todd, to your point, when LSU turned around and

14:54

14 minutes, 54 seconds

decided, okay, yeah, let’s let’s focus on putting pressure and doing what Blake Baker likes to do and be aggressive and not just sit back on our heels, then they found more success.

15:02

15 minutes, 2 seconds

I agree. And I also think that your point about Levit is is very disconcerting at this point in the

15:09

15 minutes, 9 seconds

season. Uh, you know, he can’t make a layup.

15:13

15 minutes, 13 seconds

All right. Let’s talk a little bit more about Levit. Can we talk about that more in the next segment? Yeah.

15:17

15 minutes, 17 seconds

All right. Uh and then coming up uh after that uh we are going to hear from Michael Cabbell uh WBRZ sports director

15:26

15 minutes, 26 seconds

and he was up in Oxford like so many other media members as well. So we’ll take a break. Our first one here on Tiger Rag Radio. Don’t go away. Much more to get to.

Tiger Rag Radio is back.

16:08

16 minutes, 8 seconds

Back here on Tiger Rag Radio, Jeff Polmo along with the executive editor for Tiger Rag magazine and the editor Glenn Gilbo and Case Kishnik.

16:16

16 minutes, 16 seconds

You didn’t say my name. Did I say Todd Horn? No.

16:18

16 minutes, 18 seconds

Todd Horn. I said executive editor Todd Horn who picked Miss to win.

16:23

16 minutes, 23 seconds

317 [laughter] was on his way to a correct pick until Blake Baker got the defense going and uh

16:30

16 minutes, 30 seconds

LSU got going in the second half. Uh Sam Levit, uh where are we at with Sam Levit? and has he taken some criticism

16:37

16 minutes, 37 seconds

for his play on Saturday night from some people in the LSU fan base.

16:42

16 minutes, 42 seconds

Okay. So, he’s always been an inaccurate passer, relatively speaking.

16:46

16 minutes, 46 seconds

Can I give his completion percentage for his career now? 61% which is not great.

16:51

16 minutes, 51 seconds

No, it’s not great, but it’s actually not bad, but in SEC games, meaning against SEC opponents, I should face four of them now, and none of his games have been statistically good.

17:01

17 minutes, 1 second

Right. So he was 16 of 27 with uh what? One touch, one interception. In this in this pass game?

17:10

17 minutes, 10 seconds

Yeah.

17:11

17 minutes, 11 seconds

Yeah. Did he throw Did he Yeah, he threw an interception. That’s right. So and of course the last only 158 yards, too.

17:19

17 minutes, 19 seconds

And he missed three touchdown passes.

17:22

17 minutes, 22 seconds

Missed he overthrew a wide open Eugene Wilson the third in the end zone. He missed the backup tight end.

17:27

17 minutes, 27 seconds

Zack Grace was just amazing how he missed him so bad. And then the final touchdown, there were two wide open receivers in the end zone and he ended

17:35

17 minutes, 35 seconds

up throwing it to the wrong receiver uh who that led to a tipped pass. And how many tipped passes has he had this year? Like 27,000 it seems like.

17:45

17 minutes, 45 seconds

You’re talking about the fourth and goal pass. He had two receivers open in the end zone. And what I was told is the the

17:52

17 minutes, 52 seconds

it looked like the ball was batted down at the line of scrimmage. That was tipped.

17:56

17 minutes, 56 seconds

It hit a helmet, right? It hit an LSU guys helmet is what I was told. But it it’s hard to tell on the replay. But the but but we don’t

18:03

18 minutes, 3 seconds

know if he if it’s not tipped. It might have been a good pass. [clears throat] So So I’m not gonna I’m not I’m not giving him his career doesn’t speak to being an accurate passer to begin with.

18:14

18 minutes, 14 seconds

But I’m not going to blame him because lit you we joked about it in the first part of this show. He really seriously

18:21

18 minutes, 21 seconds

did not have any time to think and he was probably uh you know I mean he ran for his life. Yeah. The whole night.

18:29

18 minutes, 29 seconds

Yeah. It’s hard to It’s hard [clears throat] to judge him with that going on.

18:31

18 minutes, 31 seconds

And like Lane said, he did miss practice last week on on key on a key day when they were running third down and and red zone

18:40

18 minutes, 40 seconds

passing. So that was a little bit of an excuse.

18:43

18 minutes, 43 seconds

I I don’t think so. I I I do think he he’s had a I I think you go back this is he’s not had two months of red zone.

18:50

18 minutes, 50 seconds

He’s not had he’s not been an accurate quarterback. His first pass at LSU was not accurate and that was before he was running for his

18:57

18 minutes, 57 seconds

last I agree. I agree that he was not an accurate passer coming in and that was the first thing I said. Yeah. But when you compound that with those other things, the fact that he had literally

19:05

19 minutes, 5 seconds

half a second to make a decision after he got the snap, that that the that that pressure was totally inordinate. That’s not acceptable.

19:15

19 minutes, 15 seconds

Yeah, that’s that’s the most uh um fitting argument for his game. Not that that he didn’t practice on Wednesday because he wouldn’t have been under a

19:24

19 minutes, 24 seconds

rush on Wednesday. Uh but he was definitely under a rush on uh on Saturday and it and it impacted him and I think Lane was right, you know,

19:32

19 minutes, 32 seconds

especially when you’re you’re rushed early in the game, he’s thinking about it the rest of the game and it’s not like it was phantom rushes like Jim

19:39

19 minutes, 39 seconds

Everett when he used to be with the Saints. I mean, there was real guys there. There was one time they had one of those shots uh from behind and he

19:49

19 minutes, 49 seconds

went back to pass and there was absolutely and actually had good pass protection but he looked at his first option and it was covered and he

19:57

19 minutes, 57 seconds

immediately took off and that’s exactly what happens whenever that you’re in that situation and there was also at least once and maybe more

20:04

20 minutes, 4 seconds

but I vividly remember one play where LSU was in like a third and 11 and they were at about midfield and miss rushed

20:13

20 minutes, 13 seconds

three. Yeah. And basically all three of them got to him.

20:17

20 minutes, 17 seconds

But you know what? Great quarterbacks rise above it. [laughter] And and here’s the thing.

20:22

20 minutes, 22 seconds

And and is he he he’s obviously a great runner, but is he a great all-around quarterback?

20:31

20 minutes, 31 seconds

Not now. But that doesn’t mean he potentially can’t become that. He has a capability. He’s got a strong arm.

20:37

20 minutes, 37 seconds

It’s it’s just not an accurate arm. And when you don’t have composure because you don’t you’re not allowed to have

20:46

20 minutes, 46 seconds

composure when you’re under that much heat. Again, I’m not justifying it, but what I’m saying is that that’s almost impossible.

20:53

20 minutes, 53 seconds

What do we think of this receiver core now through three weeks now that you have no trade as Green who Winnie Watkins is obviously a guy that’s

21:02

21 minutes, 2 seconds

stepped up, but who else is going to step up out of this group? I think Tquin Wright would be

21:08

21 minutes, 8 seconds

Tquin right

21:13

21 minutes, 13 seconds

[laughter]

21:13

21 minutes, 13 seconds

Tz Greenquin right he’s not on the he’s not rostered uh Todd I don’t know if he’s caught that story a

21:21

21 minutes, 21 seconds

couple weeks ago [laughter] they don’t have a go-to receiver um I think the closest it is Watkins he’s a

21:29

21 minutes, 29 seconds

very good receiver I think Wilson runs great routes I’m I’m concerned I’m concerned all that said, “I still I think they

21:37

21 minutes, 37 seconds

they have already played the best team on [music] their schedule, and I I still think they’re only going to lose uh two games tops.” Yeah, he might be right. Might be right.

21:46

21 minutes, 46 seconds

Chapter 4: Injury updates and roster

22:26

22 minutes, 26 seconds

Back here on Tiger Rag Radio, Jeff Palmo along with Todd Horn, the executive editor for Tiger Rag Magazine. the editor, Gwen Gilbo, and Case Kishnik,

22:34

22 minutes, 34 seconds

our producer. I’m Jeff Polmo. We are efforting Michael Kbble, WBRZTV sports director here in Baton Rouge. We talked

22:42

22 minutes, 42 seconds

a little bit about the injury to Tradez Green. Still don’t have an exact uh time as far as how much he’ll miss. Good chance that you won’t see him again

22:50

22 minutes, 50 seconds

until October sometime. Uh but Desawn Spears is or Deshawn Spears, excuse me,

22:56

22 minutes, 56 seconds

is out for the season. And Lane Keifin has said that is a huge loss because of

23:03

23 minutes, 3 seconds

his ability and he was a fit for uh what they were looking for out of Blake Baker’s defense and the position that he

23:12

23 minutes, 12 seconds

was playing. And now you don’t have him and you don’t really have anybody else like him on the roster much like you

23:19

23 minutes, 19 seconds

don’t have anybody like Tradez Green on the offensive side of the football.

23:24

23 minutes, 24 seconds

No. And I think that that the thing that people often overlook is it’s not just you’re looking for a replacement now for

23:32

23 minutes, 32 seconds

Spears who obviously would will not be as good at the position as Spears was because Spears was the starter. But

23:40

23 minutes, 40 seconds

their solution apparently based on last game is to move Culie from free safety

23:48

23 minutes, 48 seconds

or from safety. I don’t know how you determine which one’s free most of the time in the way they play the defense, but move him [clears throat] up to the

23:56

23 minutes, 56 seconds

star and then put Jace Thomas in. And as we know, Jace Thomas had a good fall camp and was uh getting some reps, but obviously he wasn’t the starter either.

24:07

24 minutes, 7 seconds

So you now you’re really replacing two positions. And as Glenn pointed out during the break, um, and as we talked

24:14

24 minutes, 14 seconds

about earlier that the defensive secondary was, you know, playing whiffle ball most of the first half at least

24:21

24 minutes, 21 seconds

against the coverage. They were wide open holes all over the place and and that was before these types of changes.

24:27

24 minutes, 27 seconds

So now they’re going in against a quarterback in in at Texas A&M that’s just eaten them alive for the last two

24:36

24 minutes, 36 seconds

years on the ground. And um I don’t know what they’re going to do to stop that, especially with Spears being

24:44

24 minutes, 44 seconds

out and the star being such a key aspect of stopping a a running quarterback. You can’t just put a spy on him. That doesn’t work anymore.

24:52

24 minutes, 52 seconds

It’s going to be interesting to see because Blake has continually had trouble with the running quarterbacks and there’s so many running quarterbacks

24:59

24 minutes, 59 seconds

and Marcel Reed has literally torn them up two years in a row. I mean, so so has Trinidad, right? Well, Trinidad didn’t do it

25:06

25 minutes, 6 seconds

running, right? this this game. LSU did contain him, but they did it by that was with Spears part of the game. Yeah.

25:13

25 minutes, 13 seconds

Well, at least one half. Yeah.

25:15

25 minutes, 15 seconds

I I think the encouraging thing about about this week is is that if they can contain

25:22

25 minutes, 22 seconds

Reed from running the way they did Chamblas, Reed is not going to be able to pass the ball nearly as well as Chamblas did

25:30

25 minutes, 30 seconds

because he’s just not as good of a passer. And and also they lost their top receiver in Terry Buusy, right? So he’s

25:38

25 minutes, 38 seconds

out for the year. So top returner. He was top returning well top he was a receiver.

25:44

25 minutes, 44 seconds

He was a return receiver but he was he was a top returner.

25:47

25 minutes, 47 seconds

Yeah, he was a big time return man for him as well. So but but he’s you know obviously he was recruited by LSU was a fivestar coming out and he he was a he’s a impact

25:56

25 minutes, 56 seconds

player. So that that’s going to definitely hurt them. I think the thing that that blows my mind though is that

26:04

26 minutes, 4 seconds

Kentucky just dominated Texas A&M for most of that game.

26:08

26 minutes, 8 seconds

It was surprising. It was really surprising. And Kentucky looks like, man, that trip to Lexington in October looks a lot tougher.

26:17

26 minutes, 17 seconds

What about Mississippi State? That looks tough, too. You know, I mean that Mississippi State has one of the best players in college football according to

26:24

26 minutes, 24 seconds

Nick Sabin. [laughter] Right. Right. How about the two best quarterbacks in college football potentially are in the state of Mississippi.

26:32

26 minutes, 32 seconds

What about Nick Sabin? This is going off tangent, but what about Nick Sabin saying on game day that he did not tell Lane Kein did not advise him to come

26:41

26 minutes, 41 seconds

take the LSU job that he advised him that he had built a good thing at Old Miss and he had a a great quarterback coming back. Why not just be happy with

26:50

26 minutes, 50 seconds

that? That’s what he said. Basically, I’m paraphrasing. saying that just because he’s in front of all the Old Miss fans and he’s I don’t know.

26:57

26 minutes, 57 seconds

Actually, last year that was the first thing Nick said when Lane came up. He said, “You got it good at Old Miss.” But

27:03

27 minutes, 3 seconds

then later what he said was, you know, I mean, this is kind of splitting hairs, but but he said, “Uh, LSU’s a great job.

27:13

27 minutes, 13 seconds

You could win more, but that’s different than, hey, you should take the job.

27:18

27 minutes, 18 seconds

If you take the job, it’s a great thing.” So, but he kind of went both ways. kind of like I did on my pick.

27:23

27 minutes, 23 seconds

[laughter]

27:23

27 minutes, 23 seconds

All right, let’s bring in Michael Cabo who joins us now from WBRZ. Michael, thanks a lot for joining us tonight. How you doing?

Chapter 5: Michael Cobbell interview

27:31

27 minutes, 31 seconds

Doing great. How are you guys doing?

27:32

27 minutes, 32 seconds

Oh, we’re doing well. All right, so you were uh field level for the game on uh Saturday night. uh now that you’ve had a chance to soak it in and I’m sure you

27:40

27 minutes, 40 seconds

watched it and watched the the TV broadcast of it. Uh overall thoughts on what uh you what you saw with your own

27:48

27 minutes, 48 seconds

two eyes and then after re-watching the game?

27:52

27 minutes, 52 seconds

Yeah, just missed opportunities I think for LSU. Uh misjudgment, you know, maybe to start and then not able to capitalize

27:59

27 minutes, 59 seconds

on some of the momentum that you built throughout the course of the game. I was really surprised when I saw that LSU was rolling out the zone coverage that they did against Chamblas.

28:08

28 minutes, 8 seconds

Yep.

28:09

28 minutes, 9 seconds

I kind of understand the why, you know, but to me, all you’re doing is playing to his strength and allowing him a

28:16

28 minutes, 16 seconds

little bit more time in the pocket and the ability to kind of see the field.

28:20

28 minutes, 20 seconds

And I was I mean, let’s let’s give credit where credit is due, right? Super impressed with Chamblas, everything that he brought to the field, his

28:27

28 minutes, 27 seconds

improvements from the last time we saw him to this time. Uh he’s a phenomenal player and I think he will be in New York, you know, in early December. Um

28:36

28 minutes, 36 seconds

but I think LSU could have helped themselves in a number of ways. Yeah.

28:39

28 minutes, 39 seconds

And offense. Go ahead and we can talk about the offense.

28:42

28 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah. Well, no, I wanted to just comment on the defense while you were doing it.

28:44

28 minutes, 44 seconds

I thought they were too too passed. Not just the zone, but just their containment strategy.

28:50

28 minutes, 50 seconds

They just weren’t aggressive enough like they were in the second half. But my my I did have a question for you.

28:56

28 minutes, 56 seconds

Did you ask Lane about that after the game and he tell you that you were spoiled or anything like that?

29:01

29 minutes, 1 second

[laughter]

29:02

29 minutes, 2 seconds

No, I did ask him about it after the game and and you know, I even asked him about it again on Sunday just because sometimes, you know, the things that you

29:09

29 minutes, 9 seconds

initially think to be true aren’t. So, I wanted to kind of get his thoughts on it again. And I just think that he felt it

29:16

29 minutes, 16 seconds

was the best way for to limit him beating him beating you with his legs. Mhm.

29:21

29 minutes, 21 seconds

You know, the way I the way I envision it, and I I haven’t talked to Lane off camera personally about this, but I envision this this scenario, and I think

29:29

29 minutes, 29 seconds

it’s probably pretty true, Lane going to Blake Baker and, you know, saying, “I know this quarterback better than anybody. This is how he’s going to stop him. You know, I know his tendencies,

29:37

29 minutes, 37 seconds

etc. This is what we need to do.” And Blake’s like, “All right, you’re the boss. You know, we kind of got to roll with this.” And, um, I think that’s why

29:45

29 minutes, 45 seconds

you saw them dial up the pressures as the game went on. I think that’s why you saw them get out of it, you know, in the second half. Uh, you know, I think Blake

29:52

29 minutes, 52 seconds

probably got the call maybe the game that he wanted to call in the second half. Now, I’m just theorizing.

29:57

29 minutes, 57 seconds

You’re speculating. You’re speculating strong.

29:59

29 minutes, 59 seconds

Yeah, I could I could certainly see that being plausible. Um, I think you’re spoiled, Michael. I think you’re spoiled.

30:06

30 minutes, 6 seconds

Now, that does make sense, Michael, because Todd, what you said earlier in the show was that Blake got more to being Blake in the second half. So if so

30:14

30 minutes, 14 seconds

that would say that maybe he wasn’t Blake in the first half and that would follow with Michael’s logic.

30:19

30 minutes, 19 seconds

That’s that ju just just to I said LSU’s defense did not show up until the second half and then and I meant strategically and what they were doing schematically

30:27

30 minutes, 27 seconds

and that echoes what Michael’s speculating about right now.

30:31

30 minutes, 31 seconds

Yeah. And and it’s kind of a shame too because I get the cage rush idea of keeping him in the pocket and not

30:38

30 minutes, 38 seconds

letting him beat you on the ends. And ultimately that that’s true, but again your defense has improved in its pursuit from faster on the edge. Yes.

30:47

30 minutes, 47 seconds

Exactly. Pursuit is their strength, you know, and and I was really complimentary of them because early in the season typically when you see teams struggle to

30:57

30 minutes, 57 seconds

tackle people and get them on the ground, but that has not been an issue for this football team. So it it’s almost like they were better equipped to handle this quarterback uh if they would

31:06

31 minutes, 6 seconds

just kind of maintain the course. What what’s some of your observations about how LSU’s offense went? The uh the

31:13

31 minutes, 13 seconds

offensive line did not give Sam a lot of time yet they had a decent running game.

31:19

31 minutes, 19 seconds

So, you know, you feel you again, you feel things on the field that maybe you don’t necessarily know are true. Like when I’m watching it, I can tell that the offensive line is getting beat. I

31:28

31 minutes, 28 seconds

can certainly see that the guards are getting beat. Um, but I feel like maybe the wide receivers aren’t getting open and that’s why Levit’s kind of hanging

31:35

31 minutes, 35 seconds

on to the ball and not getting rid of it. I don’t know that that was necessarily proven correct by the film afterwards. I think it’s exactly what

31:43

31 minutes, 43 seconds

Lane said. He felt the pressure early, felt like it was going to be there all game and never settled in. So therefore, once again, he’s kind of pressing the

31:51

31 minutes, 51 seconds

issue on his own. And he’s going with the one thing that worked for him is escapability. So he’s going to dance around and try to get out of trouble.

31:59

31 minutes, 59 seconds

And that’s what he was doing. And the one thing I did notice too is on some of his throws, he’s doing like the jumping in the air throw. Um, which seemed very

32:09

32 minutes, 9 seconds

unnecessary at the time and when you went back and looked at it, it felt even more unnecessary. So I to me that is just a

32:16

32 minutes, 16 seconds

guy who is feeling an immense amount of pressure, not trusting his process, not trusting his ability to stand in the

32:23

32 minutes, 23 seconds

pocket, you know, and and deliver the ball down the field that needs to happen. But I also think, and I’ll say this against Louisiana Tech, I wasn’t

32:31

32 minutes, 31 seconds

very impressed with the scheme that they rolled out. You know, if Charlie and Lane are these offensive gurus, that I’m not seeing it in in those two games. You

32:40

32 minutes, 40 seconds

know, there’s things that they can do to slide their protection. There’s things that they can do to get players in motion, get them the ball. There’s things that they can do to get the ball out faster. They’re not implementing any

32:49

32 minutes, 49 seconds

of those. And that was a little disappointing from a coach’s perspective for me. Michael, if you don’t mind, we’re going to take a quick break, two minutes, come back, and then we’ll

32:57

32 minutes, 57 seconds

finish up this conversation. So, Michael Cobble from WBRZTV. We’ll be back after this here on Tiger Rag Radio.

33:04

33 minutes, 4 seconds

This is Tiger Rag Radio.

33:07

33 minutes, 7 seconds

All right, we continue on here with Michael Cobbell from WBRZTV. Todd, hey, Michael. uh th this weekend with

33:14

33 minutes, 14 seconds

Texas A&M coming off that shocking loss in my mind to Kentucky at you know at College Station last week. Uh this isn’t

33:24

33 minutes, 24 seconds

technically an elimination game between LSU and Texas A&M, but it may function like one psychologically.

33:30

33 minutes, 30 seconds

Which team do you think is under the the greater pressure Saturday, LSU or&M?

33:35

33 minutes, 35 seconds

I think probably Texas A&M quite honestly is under greater pressure. Um just because of the expectations, you

33:42

33 minutes, 42 seconds

know, I think people realistically they probably didn’t have the expectations LSU was going to turn this thing around in year one. You know, after week one, I

33:50

33 minutes, 50 seconds

think a lot of people did, you know, kind of change their opinion, but now after this loss to Old Miss and kind of seeing what this team looks like, it feels like it’s got a lot more flaws

33:59

33 minutes, 59 seconds

than we initially thought. So, I think the Aggies and and to your point that that shocking loss to Kentucky and, you know, isn’t it isn’t it great that LSU

34:07

34 minutes, 7 seconds

gets Kentucky and Mississippi State, you know, both in a season when they’re on a a huge upswing. So, um that’ll be fun

34:15

34 minutes, 15 seconds

later in the season, right? Those games that didn’t look like they were going to be a challenge certainly are. LSU, you know, this is, I think, an elimination game for their college football playoff

34:23

34 minutes, 23 seconds

hopes when you think about Texas and Alabama still left on their schedule, plus a road game at Tennessee, plus the aforementioned Mississippi State and

34:31

34 minutes, 31 seconds

Kentucky. So, tons of pressure on both of these teams, but I think nationally, probably Texas A&M, this feels like an elimination game, especially if they

34:39

34 minutes, 39 seconds

lose to LSU. Have two early losses, one to Kentucky, one to LSU. I don’t see them digging out of the hole for that.

34:46

34 minutes, 46 seconds

Do do you I’m going to completely change subjects here, but do you think Dylan Jones is going to get 99% of the carries for LSU’s backfield this year rushing

34:55

34 minutes, 55 seconds

attempts or do you think we’re going to see some uh some Harlem Barry?

35:00

35 minutes

I think he’s going to get about I think he’s going to get about 92%. Um I mean I just think they have the most confidence

35:06

35 minutes, 6 seconds

in him and and as an every down I would like to see more Stacy Gage. I feel like, you know, maybe spelling Dylan

35:15

35 minutes, 15 seconds

would give him even more of a benefit, but you do see the drop off even from from Dylan to Stacy. And I don’t I just

35:24

35 minutes, 24 seconds

don’t think they trust Harlem uh really to pass. I mean, he had like a huge whiff, I think it was against Louisiana Tech. So, I think that there’s just some

35:32

35 minutes, 32 seconds

trust issues there until they can get them up and running. But, no, I think yes, he’s absolutely going to be their bellcow. How much they ride him, I

35:41

35 minutes, 41 seconds

think, will depend on his health. And again, you wonder with with Trade Dez Green going out, does that only intensify that, you know, because you’re

35:49

35 minutes, 49 seconds

going to need more protection help back there. You’re going to need more guys picking up blitzers. So, it’s going to be about trust, I think, as much as it will be about running the ball.

35:59

35 minutes, 59 seconds

Talking to Michael Kbble of WBRZTV here in Baton Rouge. Michael, you were on the sidelines for the game. What What was

36:06

36 minutes, 6 seconds

that like? like did did you hear a lot of yelling at Lane or and and when it was 24/7 just what were some some of your observations?

36:17

36 minutes, 17 seconds

Yeah, I mean it was pretty intense uh from every angle and you know you knew that was going to be the case. I I was

36:25

36 minutes, 25 seconds

down at the student section in where it was obviously the most intense and most vulgar. Um how how about when he was I’m sorry to

36:33

36 minutes, 33 seconds

interrupt. Right at the beginning when he came out on the field, he went by the student section and waved at him like they were his good buddies. That was I don’t know if you saw that.

36:41

36 minutes, 41 seconds

No, I was there. Yeah, I was there for that. I was I was expecting him to kind of go back down and and and talk to them again. He he did keep a a healthy

36:49

36 minutes, 49 seconds

distance though about 30 yards

36:51

36 minutes, 51 seconds

[laughter]

36:51

36 minutes, 51 seconds

from actual the student section. But the players, when the players walked on the field, they walked right by them and I was right there when Winnie Watkins walked by and when Prince Will walked

37:01

37 minutes, 1 second

by, you know, and the students realized who they were and really started giving it to them. Uh, they obviously hate Wit Weeks. Every time Whit Weeks made a

37:09

37 minutes, 9 seconds

play, they booed Whit Weeks a ton, which I thought was interesting. Um, because I mean I don’t Yeah. Right.

37:15

37 minutes, 15 seconds

Like I don’t know. I don’t know why you hate him. He’s dating your coach’s daughter that you know left and you slandered her name all over the place,

37:22

37 minutes, 22 seconds

too. So, it’s um it’s that was an interesting piece to it. But for the most part, I will say this, everyone was

37:29

37 minutes, 29 seconds

really really awesome. Uh up until game day, you know, we were there from Thursday to Sunday and every interaction

37:36

37 minutes, 36 seconds

we had with people in the square around campus. They were they were great. And you can understand the venom being unleashed on game day. I actually expected it to be worse quite honestly.

37:45

37 minutes, 45 seconds

There were some things thrown. Yeah, there were some things thrown uh drinks and uh whatnot. Those they had the LED

37:53

37 minutes, 53 seconds

light up band so that people were throwing those. I don’t think it became an issue enough to where like people that weren’t on the field noticed it.

38:01

38 minutes, 1 second

But um no, I did expect it to be worse and I’m glad that it wasn’t. Todd, go ahead. Hey, one last question for you, Michael.

38:09

38 minutes, 9 seconds

Uh sure. Has has LSU shown you anything through three games that you trust against a good opponent for four quarters?

38:18

38 minutes, 18 seconds

I’m sorry I missed the first part.

38:20

38 minutes, 20 seconds

Have they shown you anything at all through three games that you trust they can do for four quarters against a good team?

38:27

38 minutes, 27 seconds

Oh, that’s a good question. Dylan, Starzik’s been Starzik’s been pretty pretty on the spot, I think. [laughter] I mean, not not too bad, right? Uh I

mean, we joke, but that was a relative question mark, right? something we hadn’t seen. Um, yeah, Dylan Jones I

38:44

38 minutes, 44 seconds

think is is reliable. Again, I I think the linebacker play is pretty solid. Um,

38:54

38 minutes, 54 seconds

I I really like Ty Bennettfield. I And then and and you know, I wanted to blame him for that last touchdown, but Lane

39:01

39 minutes, 1 second

said that wasn’t even his responsibility. So, I really do have to go back and watch that play to see who didn’t pinch the end there. Um, so no, I

39:09

39 minutes, 9 seconds

mean I again I think they have the pieces. And here’s the thing, guys. You know this. We’re pretty rational people, right? Like we’re not necessarily like

39:16

39 minutes, 16 seconds

fans. We understand that that they can improve, right? This they are allowed to improve.

39:21

39 minutes, 21 seconds

To quote the great Jay Johnson, you know, teams are allowed and they don’t play a better team than that. I don’t think I don’t think they certainly won’t face a better quarterback, right? Yeah.

39:30

39 minutes, 30 seconds

And and they certainly won’t face a more hostile environment. you know, the intangibles the intangibles won’t be

39:38

39 minutes, 38 seconds

ever be against them more than they were right then. So, no, I think that um and they should have won the game.

39:43

39 minutes, 43 seconds

It was a high They could have won the game.

39:45

39 minutes, 45 seconds

Well, this is the point, right? They played probably a game on offense and still had a shot at the end. Yes.

39:52

39 minutes, 52 seconds
