There has been little progress regarding the lawsuit Ole Miss filed on July 28 against former players Princewill Umanmielen and Devin Harper for not paying their buyouts from new contracts to Ole Miss before transferring to LSU last January.
Other than lawyers telling the Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi, that they expect the case to be settled out of court, there have been no developments.
On Monday, LSU coach Lane Kiffin was asked how aware he was of the players’ new contracts and the buyout and how does he hope to see it resolved.
“Yeah, I don’t really get into that,” he said. “And that sounds like a legal matter, so I don’t have a comment.”
RESERVE EDGE RUSHER DAMIEN SHANKLIN NOT PRACTICING
Kiffin did answer a question somewhat about the status of redshirt freshman edge rusher Damien Shanklin, who has not been seen at practice since camp opened last week.
“He is not practicing with the team right now, and that’s all I can comment on,” he said.
Shanklin played briefly last season before being red-shirted. He had two tackles on the season in five games, and both were sacks in the win over Southeastern Louisiana. He signed with LSU in 2025 as the No. 31 edge rusher in the nation and No. 6 prospect in Indiana from Warren Central High in Indianapolis.
Among the schools that recruited Shanklin were Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida and Oklahoma.
PRACTICE NOTES
Projected starting right offensive tackle Weston Davis, a redshirt sophomore from Beaumont, Texas, returned to practice on Monday after missing the last workout on Saturday. William Satterwhite II, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Tennessee, ran with the first team in Davis’ absence on Saturday. Satterwhite has appeared as starting center Braelin Moore’s backup on various media depth charts with Darrin Strey, a redshirt freshman transfer from Kentucky, behind Davis.
Tamarcus Cooley and Ty Benefield were the No. 1 safeties on Monday. Jhase Thomas had been running at first team safety with Benefield. Redshirt freshman linebacker Jaiden Braker of Snellville, Georgia, has been getting a look at backup edge rusher after playing briefly as a linebacker last season.
