We go over the many headlines surrounding the SEC Spring Meetings. CBS Sports Brandon Marcello gives us an up to the minute update on what’s happening in Miramar Beach, Florida as SEC leaders come together.

We also hear from columnist and author Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com and the Baton Rouge Advocate who is writing a book on the growing business of college athletics with a strong focus on LSU, which is at the epicenter of the new world of collegiate sports. Duncan also gives us his thoughts on how college football needs someone to steer the ship as the sport navigates the potential of a larger College Football Playoff.

And we hear from LSU sports information director Kent Lowe, who is in California with the men and women’s golf teams. He updates us on when LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade may announce his new roster.

Here is the complete transcript of the show from YouTube. Tiger Rag apologizes for any AI generated mistakes:

This is Tiger Rag Radio live from Super Chevy Dealer Studio

1:08

1 minute, 8 seconds

and good evening everyone. Welcome to another edition of Tiger Rag Radio.

1:14

1 minute, 14 seconds

Tonight we are at the Goodwood Public Library here that is part of the East Baton Rouge Library System and we’ll be

1:21

1 minute, 21 seconds

hearing from some library folks a little bit later on in the hour. We’ll hear from three of them in fact to talk about some of the great things that are

1:29

1 minute, 29 seconds

happening with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. But we also have a lot of LSU stuff to talk with talk

1:36

1 minute, 36 seconds

with you about. This is Jeff Polmo along with the editor for Tiger Rag magazine, Glenn Gilbo, and Todd Horn, the executive editor, will be joining us

1:44

1 minute, 44 seconds

here at the Goodwood Library in just a few moments. But certainly a lot going on now that everything is done on the field for LSU. Softball lost in the

1:53

1 minute, 53 seconds

super regional to Alabama. just a a superior Crimson Tide team. LSU baseball, of course, as expected, did not get into the NCAA tournament. We

2:02

2 minutes, 2 seconds

already have our first defection from the 2026 team. Maverick Rzzy has jumped into the Travis or Travis to into the

2:10

2 minutes, 10 seconds

transfer portal. If uh as long as William Schmidt and Case Evans don’t get in, I I think anybody else that decides

2:16

2 minutes, 16 seconds

to hop in there, then uh so be it. I think at this point, um I think they certainly need those two guys, uh to

2:24

2 minutes, 24 seconds

return next season, but everybody else uh well maybe maybe some of the freshman, you would like those guys to come back as well. But uh Maverick Rzzy

2:33

2 minutes, 33 seconds

did not improve this year, so he’s moving on. Uh Gage Jump making his major league debut tonight. But um former LSU

2:40

2 minutes, 40 seconds

Tigers, he’ll be making his major league debut for the A’s tonight. But the uh the big story right now, Glenn, is what is happening in Dest Florida, the SEC

2:50

2 minutes, 50 seconds

spring meetings, which kicked off this morning. We actually heard from Commissioner Greg Seni on Monday night a lot of talk about where the SEC stands

2:59

2 minutes, 59 seconds

on the 2014 team college football playoff. Of course, the SEC at this moment continues to be the holdout as far as moving to a 2014 playoff in 2027.

3:12

3 minutes, 12 seconds

And then just about an hour before we got on the air here, Lane Kitman spoke at the SEC spring meetings and there’s

3:20

3 minutes, 20 seconds

talk about him potentially being reprimanded for some comments that he made to Vanity Fair regarding the

3:26

3 minutes, 26 seconds

controversial comments that he had talking about Old Miss and its ties to the Confederacy saying that’s what

3:34

3 minutes, 34 seconds

grandparents of recruits said and it’s not his words. Uh but we’ll see if uh he’ll be fined or any kind of reprimand

3:42

3 minutes, 42 seconds

or anything will be announced. Uh but uh the main thing he kind of talked about today um is uh the return of Ed Orron to the LSU football program.

3:53

3 minutes, 53 seconds

Right. Right. And uh he said that he and Ed talked a about that just just recently before they finally finalized it. and uh you know they were trying to

4:02

4 minutes, 2 seconds

make sure that you know they knew what Ed wanted to do and and how he wanted to uh be a part of the program again. But

4:11

4 minutes, 11 seconds

uh also uh this afternoon uh and and Destin uh Lane gave more good reports on

4:18

4 minutes, 18 seconds

uh the Lisf Frank injur injury of Sam Lev. He said he’s been running 21 miles per hour, which you know I’m familiar with pitchers throwing 100 miles per

4:26

4 minutes, 26 seconds

hour. I guess that’s fast if you can run 21 miles per hour because uh running the ball is a big part of Sam Levit’s game and LSU hasn’t had that since Jaden

4:35

4 minutes, 35 seconds

Daniels. So that’s good news. And but I do remember Brian Kelly giving a similar figure when he was talking about Garrett Nusmeer.

4:41

4 minutes, 41 seconds

Well, Garrett Nusmire might have run 50 miles an hour, but it didn’t matter because he he chose not to run uh most of the time. And and he was hurt, right?

4:50

4 minutes, 50 seconds

despite what a lot of people are trying been trying to say that it was in his head, he was definitely hurt all year.

4:57

4 minutes, 57 seconds

But, um, Lane has been saying quite a bit that he thinks Levit’s going to be at or near 100% when practice starts in

5:05

5 minutes, 5 seconds

August. So, I think that’s just more good news there. Quick note on Maverick Rzzy. You know, the thing about the portal, a lot of times, you know, the

5:12

5 minutes, 12 seconds

the coaches in the school doesn’t come out and say it, but sometimes they politely say, “Hey, look, it might be a good idea if you enter the portal.” And

5:20

5 minutes, 20 seconds

I think that might be what is the case with with Maverick, you know, because if you got more players and more pitchers coming in and you’re trying to get

5:27

5 minutes, 27 seconds

better, you’re not going to want everybody to come back uh that’s already on your team, you know. I think they do

5:34

5 minutes, 34 seconds

want uh obviously like you said, William Schmidt and Case Evans and and probably several other pitchers and most of the uh the the freshman that they signed

5:42

5 minutes, 42 seconds

last year. But uh when you have that type of season, um I can guarantee you that there’s probably some players that

5:50

5 minutes, 50 seconds

might think they’re welcome back, but they might not be.

5:53

5 minutes, 53 seconds

Yeah. I I can also just see it from Maverick’s point of view if it if this is the case. Hey, I I had a rough season this year. I was not connecting with

6:02

6 minutes, 2 seconds

what Nate Yesi was trying to teach me. I might need to go somewhere else where where where you don’t have to go against SEC hitters.

6:09

6 minutes, 9 seconds

Maybe so. Maybe so to help try to find your confidence. But and maybe the strike zone’s bigger.

6:15

6 minutes, 15 seconds

Yeah. May maybe so. Uh because ABS is probably coming to the SEC after what I think was what did she say? I I think it

6:24

6 minutes, 24 seconds

it went well in the SEC tournament. The AB ABS challenge system.

6:29

6 minutes, 29 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was it was funny how you when when I was listening to games and watching games and how the uh the voice over would kind of come in that there were and it it kind of went

6:38

6 minutes, 38 seconds

smoothly and quickly for for the for the most part, but uh it’s just one more thing that delays the game. I I would not prefer not to have it myself. Well,

6:45

6 minutes, 45 seconds

we’ll see when they may implement it for SEC regular season games, but your thoughts here on a lot of the discussion

6:53

6 minutes, 53 seconds

regarding the 2014 playoff, whether to keep the SEC championship game, can the you know, there’s a lot of, you know,

7:01

7 minutes, 1 second

we’re hearing from um, you know, Georgia’s uh, leaders about, hey, let’s create our own rules when it comes to NIL. What’s And then you even heard

7:10

7 minutes, 10 seconds

Kirby Smart say today, uh, he he’s all for, you know, the SEC in the in the Big 10, you know, breaking away and doing

7:18

7 minutes, 18 seconds

their own thing. I mean, you know, I think Greg Sanki, listening to what he had to say on Monday night, really tried

7:25

7 minutes, 25 seconds

to tap the brakes on a lot of this stuff that we don’t need to be rushing into, don’t need to be rushing into a 2014 playoff and don’t need to make any, you

7:34

7 minutes, 34 seconds

know, huge announcements, huge decisions here, especially over these three days in Destin, Florida. We’re going to have Brandon Marcelo on by the way in hour

7:44

7 minutes, 44 seconds

number two from CBS Sports who is in Destin and we’ll looking forward to that interview coming up in the um 7:00 hour.

7:51

7 minutes, 51 seconds

But it doesn’t seem like you know we had we had Matt Hayes on from the USA Today network last week and he talked about

7:59

7 minutes, 59 seconds

how huge the spring meetings were going to be. I think it’s a lot more talk. I don’t know how much action it usually is. It usually is talk and Sanki tends not to like to take action.

8:10

8 minutes, 10 seconds

and he tends to just like to talk and go on about parliamentary procedure. Um, and frankly, um, you know, I I think

8:18

8 minutes, 18 seconds

sometimes when you listen to him talk, you wonder why they even having the, uh, meetings like when he was speaking last night. But, you know, whether he wants

8:27

8 minutes, 27 seconds

to admit it or not, as Matt Hayes said, the the SEC coaches and athletic directors, they’re really split on what

8:34

8 minutes, 34 seconds

what they want to do. You know, some of them want to stick with with 16, but but Kirby Smart, uh, you know, he he he said

8:42

8 minutes, 42 seconds

he would like 24 in the playoffs. Sanki definitely does not want 24. Matt Hayes definitely does not want 24. Um, I I

8:51

8 minutes, 51 seconds

think 16 would be good from from 12. Um, I I tend to agree. I I don’t I don’t think um, you know, there there’s

8:58

8 minutes, 58 seconds

already some questionable teams getting in at 12, right? you know, so I definitely don’t think you should go uh

9:05

9 minutes, 5 seconds

past 16, but you know, and and the the SEC championship game logically just doesn’t fit, but they’re not going to

9:13

9 minutes, 13 seconds

get rid of it because it does make so much money, right?

9:16

9 minutes, 16 seconds

You know, and and uh you you could recoup that money if you get more teams into the playoffs, but they don’t seem

9:24

9 minutes, 24 seconds

to want to take that risk. Uh, but it it’s just to me it’s just very frustrating because as as Jeff Duncan, our first guest, wrote earlier this

9:33

9 minutes, 33 seconds

week, you know, the the uh college football needs to be more like the NFL and the NFL there, like Verge Osbury has

9:41

9 minutes, 41 seconds

said this a couple of times and he said it he said it last week when he met with a lot of media. The NFL is all together

9:49

9 minutes, 49 seconds

Tuesday through s through Saturday with the exception of the Thursday night game which you ought to get rid of anyway.

9:56

9 minutes, 56 seconds

you know, the only time they’re not together is when they’re playing, but but every time else they’re they’re all for one, you know, and and they’re they’re together. They have a great

10:04

10 minutes, 4 seconds

schedule, you know, and they don’t have so many voices, you know, there just a couple of voices that make the decisions in the NFL, you know. So, the NFC South

10:13

10 minutes, 13 seconds

and the NFC Central, they don’t have their own commissioners, right? You know, and they don’t play each other before the playoffs to see who wins that region like like the SEC does. And I

10:22

10 minutes, 22 seconds

think that’s the biggest problem with college football. There’s just too many voices and too many people who want to do things their way and they can never get get together.

10:30

10 minutes, 30 seconds

Well, the problem is is that there are too many separate TV contracts in the NFL. It’s and granted, you know, there’s

10:38

10 minutes, 38 seconds

different TV deals with CBS, NBC, uh Amazon, Netflix, and all that. And but

10:46

10 minutes, 46 seconds

the difference here is the SEC is looking out for the TV contract that it has with ESPN, right? The Big 10 is

10:53

10 minutes, 53 seconds

looking out for the contract it has with Fox, knowing that if you had 24 teams in a college football playoff, some of

11:01

11 minutes, 1 second

those games would would allow Fox to televise some of the playoff games, right? And so the Big 10 is making making this push because of that because

11:10

11 minutes, 10 seconds

they’re looking out for their TV partner and and and that’s that’s a huge Yeah. And issue in this thing.

11:16

11 minutes, 16 seconds

ESPN is also not for 24. They’re they’re pretty much for for 16, you know, and and Matt Hayes brought up a great point

11:24

11 minutes, 24 seconds

on on Tiger Egg Radio last week, you know, no matter Yeah. The Big 10 won three national championships. They they have the bigger enrollments. They’re in

11:32

11 minutes, 32 seconds

bigger cities. They they put out more money to their members every year, which the SEC has kind of been good at keeping that quiet. But still, the bottom line

11:41

11 minutes, 41 seconds

is the SEC games, even if it’s Mississippi State and Kentucky or, you know, some second line game, they draw

11:50

11 minutes, 50 seconds

extremely better than the Big 10.

11:53

11 minutes, 53 seconds

And I’m glad that Greg Seni talked ye on Monday about expanding to 24 teams and what that might mean for rivalry games.

12:04

12 minutes, 4 seconds

If in the case of Michigan, Ohio State or Alabama, Auburn, thinking that Auburn eventually will get good again that you

12:13

12 minutes, 13 seconds

have and Alabama stays good. Uh that you’ll have teams actually resting players in a rivalry game because this

12:21

12 minutes, 21 seconds

doesn’t the Iron Bowl doesn’t mean anything. It’s you got to get ready for your first round opponent that could potentially be the next week, especially

12:29

12 minutes, 29 seconds

if you get rid of the conference championship game.

12:32

12 minutes, 32 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. They the I think the perfect thing to to do would be 16 teams in the

12:38

12 minutes, 38 seconds

playoff, no championship games, and make the regular season 11 period. You know,

12:46

12 minutes, 46 seconds

they they always had the big rivalries when there was just 10 game schedules.

12:50

12 minutes, 50 seconds

You know, just just go back to 11 and don’t have the uh easy games. Have a little time off before the playoffs start. Don’t have the championship game.

12:58

12 minutes, 58 seconds

I don’t see them ever going back down to 11, but um I I agree with a lot of what you have to say.

13:07

13 minutes, 7 seconds

Yeah, I wasn’t making a money money argument. I was just saying that that’s what makes the most common sense and and you know they would recoup

13:15

13 minutes, 15 seconds

the money I I feel in with more playoff games and you’ll have more playoff games with with 16 and that’s that’s what the

13:22

13 minutes, 22 seconds

Big 10 says. if you go to 24 playoffs game 24 playoff teams that’ll recoup what you lose from the championship game but maybe not.

13:29

13 minutes, 29 seconds

All right. Uh so later on in this hour we we will hear from Jeff Duncan of nola.com and the advocate. Yeah, he had a great article looking at uh the future

13:39

13 minutes, 39 seconds

of college football and the talk of expanded playoffs. We’re also going to hear from Kent Low, sports information director for LSU men’s basketball. Uh

13:48

13 minutes, 48 seconds

Will Wade obviously has been in the news here uh as he has received a lot of commitments from some older players. Uh we’ll get Kent’s perspective on that.

13:57

13 minutes, 57 seconds

And as I mentioned uh we’ll hear from Brandon Marcelo from CBS Sports as he’ll give us a report on what was an

14:05

14 minutes, 5 seconds

interesting first day of the SEC spring meetings. We heard from a lot of big-time coaches including Lane Kein, Kirby Smart, Mike Elco, all of them

14:13

14 minutes, 13 seconds

giving their thoughts on the future of college football and a potential 2014 playoff. So stay tuned. We have more

14:20

14 minutes, 20 seconds

coming up from the Goodwood Public Library, part of the East Baton Rouge Library system. As joining us coming up after the break, we will talk to an

14:29

15:50

15:57

15 minutes, 57 seconds

System. That’s Brandon Riley. Brandon, how you doing? Hey Jeff, how’s it going? I’m I’m great. Happy to be here.

16:03

16 minutes, 3 seconds

It’s always good seeing you and good hearing your voice. Uh today you’re talking about the uh summer reading program. We are officially in summer. I

16:11

16 minutes, 11 seconds

know the calendar still says spring, but let’s face it, school is out. We just got past Memorial Day weekend. Uh starting to get hot out there. tell us

16:19

16 minutes, 19 seconds

what the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System has to offer when it comes to summer reading programs.

16:26

16 minutes, 26 seconds

Well, every year we do a theme. This year’s theme is sort of related to nature. So, it’s plant a seed and read.

16:33

16 minutes, 33 seconds

So, I’m in charge of the adult portion of this. And uh we’re kind of doing the same thing we did last year, which is you get a bingo card, you read three

16:41

16 minutes, 41 seconds

books, uh you get incentives, you get a chance to to sign up for some drawings we have at the end of the summer. Um, you get a nice tote bag. Yeah.

16:50

16 minutes, 50 seconds

And then we have various challenges uh like we’re continuing our lender challenge from last year, which is if you visit every all 15 locations in a

16:59

16 minutes, 59 seconds

day or across the summer, you get a special certificate. And we’re uh we’re bringing in a new challenge this year called the Barrower Challenge. It’s

17:06

17 minutes, 6 seconds

named after uh the first library card that we have on record for the system, a person whose last name was Barrow. This one you read 26 books by the end of the

17:15

17 minutes, 15 seconds

year. you get uh you become a a barrower and so you can be you can both a linder and a barrower be

17:22

17 minutes, 22 seconds

wow that’s great that’s terrible but it’s a lot of fun uh thousands of adults participate every year in our

17:30

17 minutes, 30 seconds

summer reading uh adult summer reading challenge and we hope this year that we put up even bigger numbers tell us why so many adults get involved

17:37

17 minutes, 37 seconds

in this what what kind of feedback do you hear from them well people in uh East Baton Rouge Parish they love to read um they love to

17:45

17 minutes, 45 seconds

engage with the library. Uh because it’s not just reading, you can also participate by going to our events. Uh you can go online and use our electronic

17:53

17 minutes, 53 seconds

databases and uh for whatever you need to. We count all those things. So uh people are very engaged with the library. Uh they like uh engaging with

18:02

18 minutes, 2 seconds

the community and we’re going to have a lot of events uh that sort of bring people together to sort of um you know just experience the summer together as a community.

18:11

18 minutes, 11 seconds

Yeah, no doubt about it. What are the type of books that most adults are reading? Or is that even a Is that an easy question to answer?

18:19

18 minutes, 19 seconds

Well, I I I try not to look at what people are reading. I I believe in privacy, you know, that sort of thing.

18:25

18 minutes, 25 seconds

But people love fiction in East Baton Rouge Parish. They also love history. Uh we’ve got a lot of people that check out a whole lot of history books, whole lot

18:33

18 minutes, 33 seconds

of fiction. So, uh but all kinds of readers in East Baton Rouge, uh reading all kinds of different uh genres. Are

18:40

18 minutes, 40 seconds

there any particular books this summer that seem to be more popular than others? I mean, I I would imagine you got multiple multiple copies of certain books.

18:49

18 minutes, 49 seconds

Oh, you got the wrong guy up here for that question. I look at the programming stuff. Uh but in terms of what’s being

18:56

18 minutes, 56 seconds

read, all the all the all the usual suspects, you know, James Pattersons and the But yeah, so I would have to look

19:05

19 minutes, 5 seconds

into that. Come back. I’ll circle back as they say. Yes. Uh so tell us again how you can get involved uh if you if

19:13

19 minutes, 13 seconds

you want to get involved and then get uh you know the the certain uh prizes or rewards uh that you may get for reading uh so many books.

19:22

19 minutes, 22 seconds

Right. Right. So just uh signing up you get an incentive. It can be anything a pin, a a USB cord, something like that.

19:29

19 minutes, 29 seconds

Uh you read three books. Um you finish it, you get the tote bag and you get the drawings for the end of the year um incentive drawings that we have. Um, to

19:38

19 minutes, 38 seconds

sign up, you can either go to our website and go to Beanstack or just follow the the links for adult summer

19:45

19 minutes, 45 seconds

reading, or you can go in person to a library, any of our 15 locations, talk to somebody at the circulation desk, and

19:52

19 minutes, 52 seconds

they’ll set up your Beanstack account for you, and that’ll help you track your reading throughout the summer. And if, again, if you don’t want people to know what you’re reading, you can do it all

20:00

20 minutes

on paper. We have a neat little bingo card with some nice graphics on it that we hand out to folks, and you can track your reading there. And all it takes is getting reading three books, right?

20:09

20 minutes, 9 seconds

Just three books. And you get the tote bag.

20:11

20 minutes, 11 seconds

And you get the tote bag. It’s very patriotic this year, too. Red, white, and blue.

20:15

20 minutes, 15 seconds

Oh, that’s perfect. And I would imagine there’s some that surpass that that three number.

20:21

20 minutes, 21 seconds

Oh, yes. Yes. Every year we have a couple people that make it into the hundreds across the summer. I guess all they’re doing is reading.

20:29

20 minutes, 29 seconds

This weekend would have been a great weekend with all the rain, right? There wasn’t much to do outside.

20:35

20 minutes, 35 seconds

So yeah. All right. Well, that’s that’s a terrific is this, you know, obviously there’s a lot of um programs that are

20:42

20 minutes, 42 seconds

catered around kids or maybe kind of a specific uh interest levels, but this is just very general. I would imagine this

20:49

20 minutes, 49 seconds

is one of the bigger programs that you have or has the most participation.

20:54

20 minutes, 54 seconds

Absolutely. Yeah. Uh, like I said, every year, uh, at least 200 um, I’m sorry, 250,000.

21:00

21 minutes

At least, uh, 2,00 2,500 people sign up and and complete the challenge, and way more sign up and never complete. So, yeah. All right.

21:09

21 minutes, 9 seconds

A lot a lot of interest.

21:10

21 minutes, 10 seconds

All right, Brandon, I appreciate it, man. Thanks a lot for stopping by.

21:13

21 minutes, 13 seconds

Always good seeing you, as I mentioned earlier. And again, it’s the summer reading program. And give me that website address again. It’s ebrpl.com.

21:21

21 minutes, 21 seconds

All right, that’s pretty easy to remember. All right. So, if you’re looking to get involved in summer reading, don’t necessarily want to, I don’t know, buy a few books, you can always come out here.

21:30

21 minutes, 30 seconds

Yeah. Don’t buy books. Come check them out here. We’ll save you a lot of money that way.

21:35

21 minutes, 35 seconds

Exactly. Exactly. And you can get a a free tote bag if uh you read three of them. Thanks a lot for your time tonight, Brandon. Absolutely.

21:41

21 minutes, 41 seconds

23:44

23 minutes, 44 seconds

and that would be Jeff Duncan from nola.com and the advocate. Jeff, thanks a lot for joining us tonight. How you doing?

23:52

23 minutes, 52 seconds

Doing great guys. Glad to be on. Thanks for having me.

23:55

23 minutes, 55 seconds

Well, it’s great to have you on. and you had a very interesting article and obviously you do a lot of uh covering of uh the NFL and you’ve seen how that

24:04

24 minutes, 4 seconds

league has grown here and you’ve also obviously covered college athletics and you got a book that’s looking at that as well. Maybe we’ll get into that topic as

24:12

24 minutes, 12 seconds

well. But your thoughts on the talk of expanding the college football playoff to 24 teams and how dangerous that could be for the future of college football.

24:24

24 minutes, 24 seconds

Well, I’ll be honest with you, Jeeoff. I’m kind of a proponent of expanding it.

24:29

24 minutes, 29 seconds

I I’m not sure I’m ready to see it go to 24. I’d certainly be willing to listen to some of the arguments for it, but I

24:38

24 minutes, 38 seconds

definitely think uh going to 16 teams is a perfect kind of compromise between uh

24:45

24 minutes, 45 seconds

where they’re at now and where some of the other proposals have been. You know, I I started out in Louisiana, uh, up in

24:52

24 minutes, 52 seconds

North Louisiana and Monroe covering, uh, you know, it was back then it was Northeast Louisiana, Gramling, uh,

25:00

25 minutes

Louisiana Tech at one time had been onea, you know, they’ve had a 16 team playoff for decades and it’s worked just

25:07

25 minutes, 7 seconds

fine. All the lower levels have always had 16 team playoffs. Uh, they’ve managed to do it. they have classes to

25:14

25 minutes, 14 seconds

go to and you know things to negotiate the same way and I realize the bowl system makes it a little bit different

25:21

25 minutes, 21 seconds

for uh you know the highest level of college sports but I think we’re able we’re able to see that we can merge

25:29

25 minutes, 29 seconds

those two agendas incorporate the bowls the way the Sugar Bowl has been incorporated in the college football playoff and make it work and I really

25:37

25 minutes, 37 seconds

think that’s going to end up being the solution long term look I think the driver of all this as we all know is money, right? and it’s going to provide

25:46

25 minutes, 46 seconds

more revenue for these universities like LSU uh and and like the schools in the SEC that desperately going to need it if

25:53

25 minutes, 53 seconds

we’re continuing to go on this uh just un you know it’s the Indie 500 uh with

26:00

26 minutes

no guardrails and I don’t know where it’s going to stop but right now finding more revenues the only solution I hear

26:07

26 minutes, 7 seconds

and I think expanding the playoff would would provide more revenue.

26:12

26 minutes, 12 seconds

Hey, Jeff. This is uh this is Todd. I think what you just said about about this really being driven by money and

26:21

26 minutes, 21 seconds

the fact that you’ve covered the NFL for so long and and paid so much attention to the NFL,

26:29

26 minutes, 29 seconds

you know, when we start talking about money in college football or college sports, but college football specifically, I think most people start

26:37

26 minutes, 37 seconds

thinking about NIL, you know, and and I don’t for for me just me looking at it right Now, it’s way more than the NIL.

26:46

26 minutes, 46 seconds

It’s like what you just said. It’s like a capital era of college sports where they’re they’re just hungry for revenue.

26:53

26 minutes, 53 seconds

And it’s it’s not just coming from TV now. It’s not just coming from ticket sales. It’s not just coming from sponsorship sales. It’s coming from

27:02

27 minutes, 2 seconds

anywhere they can get it, including taxing districts and just a whole bevy of other areas. So, so do you think this

27:10

27 minutes, 10 seconds

is really a capital era? It’s more like professional teams operating like

27:18

27 minutes, 18 seconds

private franchises inside a public infrastructure.

27:22

27 minutes, 22 seconds

Todd, I definitely think that’s where this is going. I think we’re already seeing in some uh universities a

27:30

27 minutes, 30 seconds

branching off or restructuring of the athletic departments into basically professional sports models. Uh, you

27:38

27 minutes, 38 seconds

know, I had an athletic director, actually the old athletic director of LSU, Scott Woodward, tell me he he could one day see a similar setup the way way

27:47

27 minutes, 47 seconds

we see LSU, the hospital or Tain Hospital branded by the universities, but really totally separate entities

27:55

27 minutes, 55 seconds

from those universities. He could see one day the athletic departments being set up in a similar way. And I think we’re already seeing that. If you look

28:02

28 minutes, 2 seconds

down at South Florida right now, uh, their new AD, uh, used to be the head of the Tampa Sports Commission, really doesn’t have an academic background or

28:12

28 minutes, 12 seconds

background in athletics at all at a university, but he knows how to run a sports business, and everyone in their front office now is being hired from

28:20

28 minutes, 20 seconds

similar backgrounds. And South Florida is going to be run very similar, I think, to an NFL franchise. I think that the threading the needle to make that

28:29

28 minutes, 29 seconds

work with the responsibilities that these universities have uh is is the you know that’s the magic formula. How do

28:37

28 minutes, 37 seconds

you solve that riddle? I think everyone right now is trying to figure it out.

28:42

28 minutes, 42 seconds

But I think a lot of this would be solved and I’ve read a lot recently in the news. You know, if everyone would

28:48

28 minutes, 48 seconds

just kind of adhere to the rules, as you all know, when you get college athletic directors and coaches and everyone

28:56

28 minutes, 56 seconds

involved, everybody’s looking for an edge and they find the edge wherever they can find it. That’s why I think my column trying to address, you know, the

29:04

29 minutes, 4 seconds

NCAA was at one time in charge of college sports and it’s been taken off the rails and it’s unregulated right now. There’s no one to be the heavy.

29:13

29 minutes, 13 seconds

There’s no Roger Goodell to hold everyone in line and everyone is just kind of running rampant like the Wild West. There’s no regulation involved. I

29:22

29 minutes, 22 seconds

think the NCAA was trying to do it for decades and once they saw where this was going, I think they threw up their hands and said, “Hey, we’re being sued into

29:30

29 minutes, 30 seconds

oblivion. You guys have at it and this is kind of where we’re at now. I’m not sure if we can solve it.” And I think that’s why everyone’s wanting Congress to get involved.

29:39

29 minutes, 39 seconds

Yeah. Exactly. And that’s so so but but then the score act which was just shot down is really just a way to

29:49

29 minutes, 49 seconds

establish control for the NCAA again and and almost I hate to say it this way but limit limit the compensation ability of

29:58

29 minutes, 58 seconds

the of the players or am I wrong about that? No, I think I think there’s there’s a way to get to the I think the

30:05

30 minutes, 5 seconds

intent of that is probably uh good, but it needs to be adjusted. You’re exactly right. I think the problem is and you

30:13

30 minutes, 13 seconds

mentioned NIL, right? I think the general fan thinks NIL was going to solve the problem. And I think it was

30:20

30 minutes, 20 seconds

meant, we all know what it was meant to do. It was meant to allow college athletes to earn earn compensation, be compensated for their name, image, and

30:28

30 minutes, 28 seconds

likeness because they couldn’t have jobs according to the old NCAA rules. Wasn’t fair to be a college athlete, not be able to make a little money. That was

30:36

30 minutes, 36 seconds

the intent of NIL. We all know that’s not what’s going on here. It’s all pay for play and and the the the revenue

30:44

30 minutes, 44 seconds

share teams are using the NIL uh formula to get an edge. they’re able to pay more

30:53

30 minutes, 53 seconds

above the cap, if you will, from the revenue share and that’s how they’re getting the edge on their competition and there’s no guard rails in place.

31:00

31 minutes

That’s why we see, you know, the NFL there’s a salary cap, you know, that there’s something to keep everyone in line and that’s why that league has

31:08

31 minutes, 8 seconds

become the Goliath. It has that it that the Dallas Cowboys have to operate under the same rules as the Green Bay Packers

31:17

31 minutes, 17 seconds

and and the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants don’t have an edge over a small market New Orleans. And that’s why that league has become so popular

31:25

31 minutes, 25 seconds

because everyone can compete. You don’t have uh the big brands dominating the small brands. And that’s what’s going on

31:32

31 minutes, 32 seconds

in college sports right now. Everyone the bigger brands are saying, “Well, why do we want to share with the smaller brands? We what do we get out of it?”

31:40

31 minutes, 40 seconds

Well, in the end, everyone will will be better if you come together as opposed to trying to branch off and self-govern.

31:47

31 minutes, 47 seconds

That’s that’s fool’s gold.

31:49

31 minutes, 49 seconds

Yeah. And and when you mentioned NIL especially, it it’s like NIL started out as a private to private name image and

31:58

31 minutes, 58 seconds

likeness way for the players to monetize their name brand. But it wasn’t supposed to involve the universities at all or

32:04

32 minutes, 4 seconds

the programs at all. Now it’s like the programs, like you say, it’s pay for play. They’re they’re in charge of it.

32:11

32 minutes, 11 seconds

Our guest for another segment, it’s Jeff Duncan from nola.com and the advocate.

32:16

32 minutes, 16 seconds

Hey Jeff, Glenn Gilbo here. Um, tell us about the new book you’ve uh just u been cleared to write for uh Harper Collins

32:25

32 minutes, 25 seconds

about the new landscape in college athletics and based on LSU.

32:31

32 minutes, 31 seconds

Yeah, Glenn, thanks. And this is kind of hot news. I was just uh able to sign that contract just last week. So, it really hasn’t been announced nationally

32:39

32 minutes, 39 seconds

yet. I’m sure you’ll see some announcements coming forward, but uh Tiger Egg on it first, baby. We got it.

32:46

32 minutes, 46 seconds

Breaking news. But, but look, I think I think you all all three of you all understand. I mean, this is a dynamic time in college athletics. Really

32:55

32 minutes, 55 seconds

unprecedented, transformative period. And LSU is probably the epicenter of of this

33:03

33 minutes, 3 seconds

transformation. What we’ve seen happen in the last 6 months at LSU, uh the turnover in the athletic department, uh

33:11

33 minutes, 11 seconds

the all-in approach that the university is taking, I think is fascinating. Uh and I think it’s one of the more compelling stories that I’ve come across

33:20

33 minutes, 20 seconds

in by now 20 uh really 30 years of covering sports in Louisiana. U with the characters involved. I think we all know Lane Keifin, now Will Wade’s in the mix.

33:32

33 minutes, 32 seconds

Uh the fact that Burge Osberry has been promoted to the AD. There’s just so many fascinating uh threads in this story.

33:42

33 minutes, 42 seconds

And I think what LSU is doing in many ways is at the forefront of this changing landscape of college athletics.

33:49

33 minutes, 49 seconds

And Harper Collins, the the publisher, uh reached out to me and basically said, “Hey, you know, we think there’s a great

33:56

33 minutes, 56 seconds

story in Louisiana and particularly at LSU and uh we think you’re the guy to tell it. I was very honored and very

34:04

34 minutes, 4 seconds

excited about the opportunity to tell that story. I think it’s going to be a fascinating next year. I’m going to basically follow the athletic program

34:10

34 minutes, 10 seconds

for the next uh athletic season and just write about it through the prism of this changing landscape of college athletics.

34:18

34 minutes, 18 seconds

That that’s interesting. What Jeeoff, what do what do you think, and I agree with you, but what what do you think it is about LSU that makes it like the

34:26

34 minutes, 26 seconds

epicenter or the the the microcosm of of this transitional transformational change?

34:34

34 minutes, 34 seconds

Well, Todd, we we’ve just been talking about it, right? I mean, right, it’s about money, right? I mean, pretty clearly LSU is throwing a lot of money

34:42

34 minutes, 42 seconds

at its athletic program. I think the impetus behind the changes at the football program and the basketball program were to increase revenue, right?

34:52

34 minutes, 52 seconds

I think LSU is seen as a Fortune 500 company in this state. And I think the governor sees that. We all know Jeff

34:59

34 minutes, 59 seconds

Landry, a big part of his agenda and his tenure so far has been bringing business to the state. I think he knows LSU

35:07

35 minutes, 7 seconds

athletics is good for business in Louisiana and it needs to be successful and I think they understand that it is a

35:15

35 minutes, 15 seconds

business now and and Verge Osbury will tell you it’s no longer the days of of you know and these were great ads in

35:22

35 minutes, 22 seconds

their time but Joe Dean and Skip Bertman former coaches that moved into athletic director share that’s that’s an another

35:31

35 minutes, 31 seconds

era a bygone era today it’s all about revenue generation and LSU is the most compelling storyline there. But I don’t

35:39

35 minutes, 39 seconds

think they’re alone. My my alma moater, University of Louisville, has come out and said they’re losing money and they’re still pouring money into their

35:47

35 minutes, 47 seconds

athletic department because they see this like a lot of schools as a game of musical chairs and they want to have a

35:55

35 minutes, 55 seconds

seat at the table at the end. I think everybody does. And to do that, you’ve got to be successful. So you got to invest now and and let the chips fall

36:03

36 minutes, 3 seconds

where they may. And obviously LSU is making a big bet a a you know what would we call a nine figure bet on their

36:12

36 minutes, 12 seconds

athletic program right now. And I think the governor is involved in that bet as well. And it’s just going to be fascinating to see if the gamble pays

36:19

36 minutes, 19 seconds

off. I think everyone in the nation is going to be following LSU athletics in these storylines. Well, how do how do they balance the fact that that they’re

36:27

36 minutes, 27 seconds

a public university operating with public money and in some cases and more apparent cases moving

36:36

36 minutes, 36 seconds

forward tax money, not just public money, but with being having to report that because

36:43

36 minutes, 43 seconds

they’re they’re trying to get more shielding and more privacy around that that how are they going to do that? Well, I I think we’re seeing right now.

36:51

36 minutes, 51 seconds

They’re going to basically strongarm the legislature into following what they want. I mean, they that’s what we’re seeing happening. I certainly do not

36:59

36 minutes, 59 seconds

condone that. I think that anytime you’re involved with public money, taxpayer dollars, there needs to be transparency. If you read the the report

37:08

37 minutes, 8 seconds

South Florida just put out, uh, and I encourage everyone to read that, their athletic director is saying the exact opposite. He realizes they’re going to

37:16

37 minutes, 16 seconds

be asking for more and that they’re going to be uh out in the community doing more, expecting more donations.

37:23

37 minutes, 23 seconds

And he said to do that, we need to be more transparent than ever. And I feel like LSU is doing the exact opposite.

37:30

37 minutes, 30 seconds

And I certainly think that’s wrongheaded, especially for the taxpayers of our state. We all know the state struggles uh you know,

37:39

37 minutes, 39 seconds

economically, financially. Uh, I think in when you’re asking this much for taxpayers, you need to be transparent.

37:46

37 minutes, 46 seconds

Hopefully that doesn’t get pushed through, but doesn’t look good right now.

37:50

37 minutes, 50 seconds

LSU and transparency have never really matched well. But it’s a good thing for LSU that there’s no other school in the

37:58

37 minutes, 58 seconds

state that they really have to compete with when they go strong on the legislature. Like imagine these other states with three and four big time schools.

38:06

38 minutes, 6 seconds

It’s the history at the capital though.

38:08

38 minutes, 8 seconds

If someone from LSU shows up, uh, usually they get what they want, right?

38:12

38 minutes, 12 seconds

I mean, these lawmakers, they all get tickets to football games when they grad when they when they go play in the SEC championship game, all the lawmakers get a ticket.

38:22

38 minutes, 22 seconds

That’s because LSU in Louisiana is not just football. It’s a religion. It’s It is.

38:30

38 minutes, 30 seconds

No, you’re right.

38:31

38 minutes, 31 seconds

Is No, you’re right. And I tell you, we all saw we all saw right after the LSU women

38:39

38 minutes, 39 seconds

won the national championship and Kim Moy went to the legislature and say, “Hey, we need a new arena.” Which I agree with her. I mean, yes,

38:46

38 minutes, 46 seconds

LSU’s the PMAC, I loved it for years, but it’s outdated. But the legislators fell all over themselves, but still no arena for some reason.

38:57

38 minutes, 57 seconds

There’s a lot of reasons, but there’s some plans, but you know, it always takes a long time. Hey Jeff, thanks a lot for your time. Meanwhile, the Oh, go ahead. Meanwhile, the library is leaking.

39:05

39 minutes, 5 seconds

That’s all I got.

39:07

39 minutes, 7 seconds

And there’s And even Wade Roose said the other day, we’re still looking for funding for this library even though they announced it like a year ago, I think it was. Hey, we’re building a new

39:15

39 minutes, 15 seconds

library, but yet they don’t have the money for it yet. So, anyways, all about priorities, guys. Priorities.

39:22

39 minutes, 22 seconds

Hey, Jeeoff, thanks a lot for uh making it a priority for you to be on our show tonight. We really appreciate it. Anytime, guys. Thanks for having me.

39:29

41:00

41 minutes

Yeah. So, you’re a longtimer and you’ve been involved in teen summer or teen programs for about the last decade. And

41:08

41 minutes, 8 seconds

of course, with summer rolling around, that means we have some teen summer reading programs. And tell us uh what what are you doing? What are you doing

41:16

41 minutes, 16 seconds

this year for teens to uh make sure they uh keep their nose in a book this summer?

41:21

41 minutes, 21 seconds

We’re doing tons. So, we’re just about to kick off the summer reading program.

41:26

41 minutes, 26 seconds

Um, so this year, teens, if they read at least three books, they can get involved with our um basic summer incentives. But the real thing for teens is we like to

41:34

41 minutes, 34 seconds

do these raffle tickets. So, for every three books that they read and log with us, uh, they can enter to win a one of our weekly raffle prizes and then we try

41:43

41 minutes, 43 seconds

and match them with something extra cool that we have from our like closet of prizes that we always get together.

41:48

41 minutes, 48 seconds

Oh, that’s cool. That is cool. So tell us how uh the teens can get involved and what it takes to potentially win some of these prizes.

41:56

41 minutes, 56 seconds

Yeah, so they need to be uh registered for summer reading with us. So they can either do that at any of our locations.

42:01

42 minutes, 1 second

They can come to the teen desk and get signed up or they can do it on their own if they want. They can go to ebrpl.beanstack.org uh and sign up online and then log their

42:10

42 minutes, 10 seconds

own books entirely without even stepping in. At least not yet. They have do have to come see us for prizes.

42:15

42 minutes, 15 seconds

Okay. All right. So, and so I was asking these kind of questions to Brandon, and he he wasn’t going to uh look behind the curtain, but give us an idea what teens

42:24

42 minutes, 24 seconds

are reading. I asked him about what adults are reading nowadays, and he’s saying a lot of fiction and history, but for teens, what are they uh what are they uh really interested in right now?

42:33

42 minutes, 33 seconds

They read all over the board, but they’re still really into the Percy Jackson series. Okay.

42:37

42 minutes, 37 seconds

Still a huge popular thing. And they really like their spooky books. We get a lot of Five Nights at Freddy’s.

42:42

42 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah. um and a lot of the other kind of creepy horror books, right? How has or how have you seen or or how does the East Baton Rouge Parish

42:51

42 minutes, 51 seconds

Library battle with obviously it’s just for a lot teens it’s just a lot more fun to have the iPad or I don’t even know if

42:58

42 minutes, 58 seconds

teens are looking at iPads anymore their phone obviously or you know doing all that and instead of actually picking up a physical book and reading it

43:06

43 minutes, 6 seconds

we just like to give them as many options as we can so we have a ton of graphic novels and we do see a lot of kids coming in and teens coming in just for those they want to read you know it

43:15

43 minutes, 15 seconds

may be more similar to what they’re seeing on their iPad, but they still are interested in reading and excited about it. As long as they get to pick, that’s really what we see a lot of.

43:22

43 minutes, 22 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. And and what’s the participation so far this year or what have you normally had?

43:27

43 minutes, 27 seconds

We’ve had a lot of participation, so it’s been um pretty high. We we’re not quite started yet, so we don’t know how many we’ll have.

43:34

43 minutes, 34 seconds

Um but we’ve had quite a few, you know, at least 500 participants that have gotten their prizes in the past years and then more that, you know, maybe haven’t gotten to come visit us yet.

43:42

43 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah. Okay. All right. And it’s what?

43:44

43 minutes, 44 seconds

Just three books, right? just three books. And if they keep reading three books, then they can go on and on. And a man, we have a our top reader prize for the the teen who reads and logs the most

43:52

43 minutes, 52 seconds

books um is a big gift certificate to Barnes & Noble, so they can keep getting books. But those the competition for that is steep. Those kids are intense every year. It’s great.

44:02

44 minutes, 2 seconds

Yeah. Well, uh thank you very much, Darcy, for stopping by. We appreciate it. Again, if uh you know a teenager or you are a teenager listening and you

44:10

44 minutes, 10 seconds

want to get involved in the teen summer pro reading program, how do you do that?

44:14

44 minutes, 14 seconds

You can come visit us at any of our locations. We would love to see you and we’d love for you to come to our like event programs too. Um or you can always go to our website ebrpl.com.

44:23

44 minutes, 23 seconds

Darcy, thanks for stopping by. Appreciate it. Thank you. It’s been great.

44:26

44 minutes, 26 seconds

45:28

45 minutes, 28 seconds

Two great players that are better people than they are players. This is Tiger Rag Radio live from Super Chevy Dealer Studio.

45:38

45 minutes, 38 seconds

Robin Dao is our producer tonight. Jeff Polmo along with Todd Horn and Gwen Gilbo of Tiger Rag as we are broadcasting from the East Baton Rouge

45:47

45 minutes, 47 seconds

Parish main library on Goodwood Boulevard. The Super Chevy dealer studio on the road tonight. Spoke with a couple

45:55

45 minutes, 55 seconds

of folks from the library already and we still have one more guest to come in about 20 minutes. But, uh, let’s bring

46:02

46 minutes, 2 seconds

in our next guest, and he is the sports information director for the LSU men’s basketball team, who will have to be

46:10

46 minutes, 10 seconds

working on some really good pronunciation guides in the uh, in the game in the game notes coming up in the

46:17

46 minutes, 17 seconds

2026 27 season. Kent Low joining us here on Tiger Rag Radio. Kent, how you doing?

46:24

46 minutes, 24 seconds

Don’t y’all have to keep your voices down if you’re in the library? That’s a good question, Ken.

46:30

46 minutes, 30 seconds

We’re we’re we’re in a lobby where they let you talk freely. They’re right outside the the library.

46:36

46 minutes, 36 seconds

We’re at free speech alley over here. Uh Ken, no, no one has come up and said, “Sh, that’s but that’s an excellent point, Kent.

46:44

46 minutes, 44 seconds

I’m I’m just glad I got my time zones correct because I’m out in California at the NCA Golf Championships where it’s

46:52

46 minutes, 52 seconds

just after five o’lock.” All right.

46:55

46 minutes, 55 seconds

Yeah. I I I remember adjusting to that all the time myself.

46:59

46 minutes, 59 seconds

Well Well, Kent, you’ve been in Carl’s bad for the uh the NCA championships for the for the women’s team and LSU’s women’s team did did very well and then

47:07

47 minutes, 7 seconds

you’re staying over for the for the men’s team. So, you’re going to be there longer than Frank is in the typical Omaha summer, right?

47:14

47 minutes, 14 seconds

I’ll be paying taxes here in California before this is over. Uh Well, you you’ll be broke. You’ll be broke.

47:22

47 minutes, 22 seconds

Yeah. No kidding. No kidding.

47:25

47 minutes, 25 seconds

You haven’t been asked to evacuate for any particular reason, have you? No. No. I was very calm here.

47:33

47 minutes, 33 seconds

Okay. All right. Lot of good golf. That’s the main thing. Beautiful course. My goodness. Well, we we want to talk about the golf.

47:40

47 minutes, 40 seconds

We want to talk about the women and we want to talk about the men’s upcoming chances. But Jeff was talking about the pronunciation of the soon maybe to be announced roster for men’s basketball.

47:53

47 minutes, 53 seconds

I’m also concerned about their age. I mean, are you going to have to have some type of geriatric uh

48:01

48 minutes, 1 second

they’re all Well, you you never know. I know I I think it’ll all shake itself out and

48:09

48 minutes, 9 seconds

figure itself out in the next several weeks. But uh you know, we’ll we’ll we’ll go and learn and if we have to put

48:18

48 minutes, 18 seconds

uh someone next to him like uh other sports do, we’ll put an interpreter up there.

48:24

48 minutes, 24 seconds

There you go. Yeah. Well, well, Kent, when you’re when you’re dealing with transfer portal guys that come in from other colleges in the United States,

48:32

48 minutes, 32 seconds

like what is the difference when and you know, uh, Coach McMahon had a uh, player from overseas last year, the guard, like

48:40

48 minutes, 40 seconds

what what different uh, hoops do you have to go through or does do the coaches have to go through before they can, you know, get all their papers in

48:48

48 minutes, 48 seconds

and everything? Is it is it a little more cumbersome is what I’m asking.

48:52

48 minutes, 52 seconds

I’m sure it is, Glenn, but I can’t give you any specifics on that because I just

48:58

48 minutes, 58 seconds

really don’t know that. Um, I’m sure there’s paperwork cuz I mean I’m sure any international student coming in,

49:07

49 minutes, 7 seconds

even if it’s just a general student population, I’m sure there are more forms and papers and things that have to be filled out and uh things like that.

49:18

49 minutes, 18 seconds

But honestly, I can’t really even tell you where that all begins. I assume it involves compliance. I assume it

49:26

49 minutes, 26 seconds

involves admissions, probably the academic center. I’m not I just really don’t know. That’s a question I’ve never

49:34

49 minutes, 34 seconds

really, you know, thought of or had to deal with to be honest with you. Well, Kim, when do you think I I know

49:41

49 minutes, 41 seconds

officially LSU hasn’t announced any uh signes for the basketball program or any

49:49

49 minutes, 49 seconds

commitments, but when do you think we’ll see a roster begin to materialize officially? I would

49:57

49 minutes, 57 seconds

think uh it’s going to kind of be like baseball has done in past years where

50:04

50 minutes, 4 seconds

maybe we’ll get everybody and then you know maybe we’ll have a press conference or something and will present the roster

50:12

50 minutes, 12 seconds

you know to everyone. I don’t really have any specifics on that cuz obviously

50:18

50 minutes, 18 seconds

I’m on one coast, Wills and Destin at SEC meetings and I’ve been out here uh

50:26

50 minutes, 26 seconds

uh I have been out here a week and so I really haven’t had a chance to talk with him because in most of this month I’ve

50:33

50 minutes, 33 seconds

been traveling with golf teams. So, I have to admit I have been a little away from the campus and the subject for for

50:42

50 minutes, 42 seconds

most of this uh middle part of May and end of May.

50:46

50 minutes, 46 seconds

Speaking of golf, uh the women’s team had a really strong showing. Uh didn’t didn’t make the the I guess the NCAA

50:55

50 minutes, 55 seconds

finals round, but got pretty close. And then there was an exceptional effort by one particular golfer.

51:03

51 minutes, 3 seconds

Yeah. Taylor Riley. Uh, LSU missed the 15 cut, which is the first cut after 54

51:10

51 minutes, 10 seconds

holes by one shot. And you know, as I wrote, um, Garrett has said several

51:17

51 minutes, 17 seconds

times leading into this tournament, it always comes down to one or two shots.

51:22

51 minutes, 22 seconds

Last year, they were on the right side of the cut. This year, the left the wrong side of the cut. And you could

51:30

51 minutes, 30 seconds

find anywhere in 54 holes where there’s another stroke that could have been made up. Taylor Riley, what happens is they

51:39

51 minutes, 39 seconds

take nine players from the 15 teams that missed the cut and they play for the individual title as well on Monday.

51:48

51 minutes, 48 seconds

Taylor was in a tie for the final spot and it turned into a fivehole playoff

51:54

51 minutes, 54 seconds

that ended well after dark for the four first four holes Sunday night and then they came back on Monday morning and

52:02

52 minutes, 2 seconds

Taylor parred the uh par4 17th to get her into the final round Monday afternoon. Finished two over finished

52:12

52 minutes, 12 seconds

30th in a field of 156. That’s pretty good. but it’s her final college tournament. Her mother played at LSU.

52:20

52 minutes, 20 seconds

They’re from San Diego, so she had a lot of friends out watching.

52:25

52 minutes, 25 seconds

Well, Kent, the the men’s uh start uh Friday. What What do you think of their chances going in?

52:31

52 minutes, 31 seconds

Well, they’re the seventh seed. They’re in what I call the good wave. They’ll play with the top 15 seeds late Friday

52:40

52 minutes, 40 seconds

afternoon central time, then play Saturday morning in the first two rounds. That’s uh really an advantage on

52:48

52 minutes, 48 seconds

on this course. It’s really a shot makers course. Second shot’s important being on the right side of the green. I think they’ve got a really good chance.

53:00

53 minutes

two Louisiana guys, Noah McWills from up in Northwest Louisiana, Jay Mandel from

53:06

53 minutes, 6 seconds

Lafayette area who’s well known over there, uh, lead this team, and and three other really good players, including a

53:14

53 minutes, 14 seconds

freshman who’s kind of overlooked, Dan Hayes, who’s really solid. I think they’ve got a great chance to possibly

53:22

53 minutes, 22 seconds

go into match play in this thing, which is the uh cut to eight after Monday, next Monday’s play. I think they’ve got

53:31

53 minutes, 31 seconds

a shot at it. This is a pretty solid team. They’ve had a really good consistent year.

53:37

53 minutes, 37 seconds

And you mentioned the the women’s coach, Garrett Ren, and the men’s coach is uh is Jake Amos. I mean, both of those coaches

53:44

53 minutes, 44 seconds

is is are really uh both of those teams have been improving in the in the last few years, and they’ve uh those both of those coaches are pretty uh they haven’t

53:53

53 minutes, 53 seconds

been at LSU long, and they’ve both had a major impact.

53:56

53 minutes, 56 seconds

Garrett is of course played at LSU, was an assistant on the men’s team that won the national championship in 2015.

54:06

54 minutes, 6 seconds

He’s taken LSU the last six years, which is a school record, to this national

54:13

54 minutes, 13 seconds

championship tournament. Jake Amos, who took East Tennessee four times to this

54:19

54 minutes, 19 seconds

event, back with LSU this year. He’s excited. This team’s ready to go and and

54:26

54 minutes, 26 seconds

I think uh if they get off to a good start on Friday, watch out. They could be a tough out here by the time it gets to next week.

54:37

54 minutes, 37 seconds

Ken, for for listeners who may not know, because golf isn’t like football or baseball or basketball. Sure.

54:45

54 minutes, 45 seconds

But it it has a gravity of its own, a strong following of its own. Can you sort of describe that what that’s like?

54:52

54 minutes, 52 seconds

Yeah. I mean it and it’s been really cool especially Memorial Day out here to see the number of kids that parents

55:01

55 minutes, 1 second

brought out here and watch the girls stop and sign autographs and all. Uh there’s a large following and they’ve

55:09

55 minutes, 9 seconds

kind of this year asked people to follow the players in the fairway which gives

55:15

55 minutes, 15 seconds

it a better look on TV and all but uh it’s a fun sport. It really is. And I’ve watched these girls and the guys for a

55:24

55 minutes, 24 seconds

number of years and the golf is pretty amazing. I mean, it is really really high quality players from all over the

55:33

55 minutes, 33 seconds

world playing college golf for for these colleges.

55:37

55 minutes, 37 seconds

And LSU’s had its share of uh former players that have made it to the pros uh to the PGA and I guess the LPGA.

55:47

55 minutes, 47 seconds

Sure. Yeah. Ingred Lind Ingred Lindblad of course is the most notable from two years ago who has already won. She won

55:56

55 minutes, 56 seconds

every player of the year award in 24 uh from Sweden. She won on the LPGA as a

56:02

56 minutes, 2 seconds

rookie. Maline Sagstrom who was back in the 215 era is was really great. Carla

56:09

56 minutes, 9 seconds

Tahedo uh Rosio’s sister who plays on this year’s team is on the LPGA tour. of

56:16

56 minutes, 16 seconds

course Sam Burns, David Toms on the men’s tour. So, yeah, there’s some LSU

56:23

56 minutes, 23 seconds

flags out there on both of of the big tours.

56:27

56 minutes, 27 seconds

Kent, uh, so when’s this all wrapping up? It seems like when you’re talking about it goes into match play, I mean, this is this is going on forever.

56:36

56 minutes, 36 seconds

Well, the the women’s tournament ends tomorrow with the championship match.

56:42

56 minutes, 42 seconds

Right now, they’re playing the semifinals. It looks like it’ll be number one Stanford and number two Southern Cow tomorrow in match play. And

56:50

56 minutes, 50 seconds

then the amazing thing happens as they clear holes tomorrow. They will start expanding this course. The women play at

56:59

56 minutes, 59 seconds

63 something yards. They will make this course 7300 plus yards for the men.

57:07

57 minutes, 7 seconds

There are a lot of spots that are closed off during the women’s tournament, which is where tea boxes will be. And so it becomes a behemoth for the men’s tournament which will start on Friday.

57:17

57 minutes, 17 seconds

They’ll play 54 holes. There’ll be a cut to 15. They play a fourth round next

57:24

57 minutes, 24 seconds

Monday and the top eight go to match play to decide the national champion.

57:30

57 minutes, 30 seconds

All right, Kent. Well, hopefully have an ex your extended stay will get even more extended. We appreciate your time, man.

57:37

57 minutes, 37 seconds

Oh, my pleasure, guys. Thanks. And don’t get too loud in the library there. We’ve been kicked out before. It’s okay.

57:44

57 minutes, 44 seconds

Thanks a lot, Kent. Thank you guys. Thank you.

57:47

57 minutes, 47 seconds

All right, that is uh Kent Low for LSU sports information director for men’s basketball and of course men’s and women’s golf. And it kind of sounds like

57:55

57 minutes, 55 seconds

we’re not going to see official announcements as far as transfer portal guys. That sounded like August to me. I

58:03

58 minutes, 3 seconds

I’ve heard through the grapevine and I’m not as close to it as Glenn is, but that we may not have an official roster until the first day of school.

58:13

58 minutes, 13 seconds

Yeah. Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking.

58:14

58 minutes, 14 seconds

Yeah. And that’s how it is with baseball often. And they’re probably not going to get Allen Graves, though. There he’s going to probably stay in the NBA.

58:22

58 minutes, 22 seconds

Yeah. All right. Well, let’s uh take a break. More of Tiger Rag Radio from the Super Chevy dealer studio at the Goodwood Library for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library system. When we

58:31

58 minutes, 31 seconds

come back, we’re going to talk with Tara who works for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. So stay tuned for that here on Tiger Rag Radio.

59:41

59 minutes, 41 seconds

Back to Tiger Rag Radio live from Super Chevy Dealer Studio.

59:47

59 minutes, 47 seconds

All right, back here on Tiger Rag Radio, Jeff Polmo from the Goodwood Library,

59:55

59 minutes, 55 seconds

the main library of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. This is Tiger Rag Radio. We’ll get back into the uh SEC spring meetings talk. Brandon Marcelo

1:00:04

1 hour, 4 seconds

from CBS Sports will join us coming up in about 10 minutes or so, so you want to stay tuned for that. Uh a new rule

1:00:10

1 hour, 10 seconds

was actually just passed today and we’ll get Brandon’s take on that. uh as far as football scheduling, no more uh

1:00:19

1 hour, 19 seconds

non-conference games that second to last week of the regular season. So, we’ll get Brandon’s take on that. Remember, that’s when everybody would play, you

1:00:26

1 hour, 26 seconds

know, the Citadel and uh at whatever school they can find from the the Southern Conference or something like that. That’s all over with. It’ll be a a

1:00:35

1 hour, 35 seconds

conference game that you play the second to last week. and also Lane Keifin spoke today. So, we’ll get Brandon’s take on what Lane had to say. But we’re also

1:00:43

1 hour, 43 seconds

since we’re here at the library, we’re talking about the various summer reading programs that they have with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. And

1:00:52

1 hour, 52 seconds

uh Tara Daring is with us. She’s been at the library now for 20 years and she handles the children’s summer reading

1:00:59

1 hour, 59 seconds

programs. So, this is for kids 11 and under. So tell us uh how the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System gets kids involved in summer reading.

1:01:09

1 hour, 1 minute, 9 seconds

So there’s various ways for them to participate. Uh the reading challenge itself uh can be done uh either online

1:01:16

1 hour, 1 minute, 16 seconds

or on paper. Uh we have a lot of people that still like to continue on paper. Um they can go to ebrpl.beanstack.org

1:01:26

1 hour, 1 minute, 26 seconds

or and sign up online or they can stop by any of their local locations and um and get signed up uh that way as well.

1:01:34

1 hour, 1 minute, 34 seconds

So that’s the reading challenge itself, but we can also get them involved through attending programs. We have over

1:01:41

1 hour, 1 minute, 41 seconds

300 free programs over the course of the summer.

1:01:45

1 hour, 1 minute, 45 seconds

That’s that is awesome. Well, for those that want to get involved in some of the reading challenges and then we’ll get into the different programs.

1:01:53

1 hour, 1 minute, 53 seconds

What does that entail? What kind of challenge is it to to make sure that the your child or a child that you know is reading uh every week if not every day?

1:02:02

1 hour, 2 minutes, 2 seconds

So um you know uh 20 years ago when I first started working at the library uh it was a very simple program. If you

1:02:10

1 hour, 2 minutes, 10 seconds

were a non-reader you had to listen to 10 books and if you were a reader you had to read five books and it was very

1:02:17

1 hour, 2 minutes, 17 seconds

simple but it was over as soon as you finished. And our goal now is to keep kids reading every single week, if not

1:02:25

1 hour, 2 minutes, 25 seconds

every day, as you said, because that prevents what we call the summer slide. Yeah.

1:02:31

1 hour, 2 minutes, 31 seconds

Statistics show that if they don’t continue reading throughout the summer, all of their skills that they’ve built up during the school year start to slide

1:02:39

1 hour, 2 minutes, 39 seconds

down. Uh they they lose math comprehension, reading comprehension.

1:02:45

1 hour, 2 minutes, 45 seconds

There’s a lot of things that are affected by not reading over the summer.

1:02:49

1 hour, 2 minutes, 49 seconds

So we try to incentivize it and u make it a little bit more fun and exciting to actually participate in that reading program.

1:02:57

1 hour, 2 minutes, 57 seconds

How do you incentivize the children?

1:02:58

1 hour, 2 minutes, 58 seconds

What kind of what’s what’s in it for them other than obviously gaining the knowledge of reading and learning and all that stuff? They want some other little fun things to go along with it.

1:03:07

1 hour, 3 minutes, 7 seconds

They like rewards and so we do reward them. The base program they have to earn 30 points uh they get one point per

1:03:15

1 hour, 3 minutes, 15 seconds

title uh that they’ve logged. They get two points per 30 minutes that they’ve logged depending on how they would like

1:03:22

1 hour, 3 minutes, 22 seconds

to log it. And once they reach 30 points, they’ve completed the the base program. But the incentive to continue

1:03:30

1 hour, 3 minutes, 30 seconds

is they get up to six drawings to participate in our weekly drawings, but they have to continue reading each week

1:03:39

1 hour, 3 minutes, 39 seconds

to go ahead and uh be eligible for those drawings. And so by continuing to read, they get more entries into uh that

1:03:49

1 hour, 3 minutes, 49 seconds

weekly drawing. And that weekly drawing is sponsored by local vendors around town for free items, gift packages, gift

1:03:56

1 hour, 3 minutes, 56 seconds

cards, different things like that. Um we also have an end of the summer reading drawing and that is for $50 gift cards

1:04:06

1 hour, 4 minutes, 6 seconds

and so we we let them know that you know the more chances you have to win the better better chance you have. So, so

1:04:13

1 hour, 4 minutes, 13 seconds

okay, got about a minute left. You say there’s also all kinds of different uh summer reading programs. So, I don’t know any way you can sum that up in about 60 seconds or so.

1:04:23

1 hour, 4 minutes, 23 seconds

Absolutely. So, craft activities, performers, we have live animals, we have comedy, magic, um theater, ballet,

1:04:32

1 hour, 4 minutes, 32 seconds

all sorts of different things that they can participate in. Well, I I might need to be a kid again.

1:04:37

1 hour, 4 minutes, 37 seconds

That sounds like they need to come watch all the the wonderful shows and participate in the crafts and activities and that’s at all the different

1:04:45

1 hour, 4 minutes, 45 seconds

locations throughout the East Baton Rouge Parish Library system. Absolutely. Yeah, that’s awesome. That’s awesome.

1:04:51

1 hour, 4 minutes, 51 seconds

What What have you seen? Again, I I know we we’re a little short on time, but what have you what kind of involvement have you seen from kids over the last 20 years? Is it picking up?

1:05:01

1 hour, 5 minutes, 1 second

Um, precoid it was really picking up very very a good bit. Um, and we are starting to pick up again these last few

1:05:10

1 hour, 5 minutes, 10 seconds

years. Um, but we did see a fall off during CO as everyone did, but but it’s really starting to pick back up again.

1:05:16

1 hour, 5 minutes, 16 seconds

We hope that with the digitization and the additional incentives that we can really uh can continue to increase our numbers.

1:05:24

1 hour, 5 minutes, 24 seconds

Tara, keep up the good work here at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. Thank you very much for stopping by. Thank you for having me.

1:05:30

1 hour, 6 minutes, 45 seconds

But uh if you want to read about what’s going on at the SEC spring meetings, check out Brandon Marcelo’s stuff over at cbsports.com

1:06:52

1 hour, 6 minutes, 52 seconds

as he has been there since I would imagine Monday when Greg Seni spoke.

1:06:57

1 hour, 6 minutes, 57 seconds

Brandon, thanks a lot for joining us here on Tiger Rag Radio. How you doing tonight?

1:07:02

1 hour, 7 minutes, 2 seconds

Doing all right, Dad. Uh, it’s been a newsy couple of hours here and especially these last 15 minutes uh with the learning here that the the Cruise

1:07:11

1 hour, 7 minutes, 11 seconds

Antwell bill on college sports is expected to to to fall and drop here the next few days. So, wow. Okay. All right. So, this would be

1:07:20

1 hour, 7 minutes, 20 seconds

the bill that obviously would provide some NIL regulations and then obviously all kinds of other stuff to help uh reform college athletics, right?

1:07:30

1 hour, 7 minutes, 30 seconds

Yeah. And you know, we’re speaking to Greg Seni just uh I guess about an hour or two ago now, and I was asking

1:07:37

1 hour, 7 minutes, 37 seconds

questions about like do you have any confidence? Do you feel that you’ll have confidence that this bill is going to be

1:07:44

1 hour, 7 minutes, 44 seconds

introduced before the summer recess in August? because a lot of people have said if there if something there’s not movement before August, this thing’s never going to get done because yeah,

1:07:52

1 hour, 7 minutes, 52 seconds

the recess happens and then everybody’s in campaign mode for the midterms and but now that this news is dropped here,

1:07:59

1 hour, 7 minutes, 59 seconds

um a little bit more confidence that maybe there could be some headway made in Congress because this is a bipartisan bill which is important as we know and

1:08:08

1 hour, 8 minutes, 8 seconds

then also it’s being introduced in the Senate which is where this the House they expected to maybe have the votes for the previous bill, the score act but

1:08:16

1 hour, 8 minutes, 16 seconds

they didn’t have the votes in the Senate. But doing a bipartisan bill coming out of the Senate gives this thing a little bit more hope than what we saw previously with the score act.

1:08:27

1 hour, 8 minutes, 27 seconds

Now, just out of curiosity, who’s leading the bill, even though it’s bipartisan, is it Ted Cruz and someone from the Democratic side?

1:08:34

1 hour, 8 minutes, 34 seconds

Maria Canwell. Okay. Yeah. From Washington. She’s a senator from Washington.

1:08:38

1 hour, 8 minutes, 38 seconds

Yeah. Maria Canwell. She’s been big in um in some of the push also for uh pooling media rights, for example. uh

1:08:46

1 hour, 8 minutes, 46 seconds

which by the way I’m expecting some form of that to be in this bill uh from my sourcing. So there’s going to be some interesting things that are going to be

1:08:54

1 hour, 8 minutes, 54 seconds

in this bill that weren’t in the score act that might ruffle feathers uh one way or another. Of course this is a lot of compromise. They’ve been negotiating

1:09:01

1 hour, 9 minutes, 1 second

on this Cruz and Canwell and the White House for several weeks. So, there’s going to be some things that collegiate leaders don’t like, but I think that a

1:09:09

1 hour, 9 minutes, 9 seconds

lot of the things they really want, especially antitrust protection, is what is what’s really crucial here for them.

1:09:16

1 hour, 9 minutes, 16 seconds

Do do you think the antitrust protection is actually good for the sport long term?

1:09:21

1 hour, 9 minutes, 21 seconds

Um, it’s a great question. I think at the very least it actually gives rules some teeth and then maybe it helps level

1:09:29

1 hour, 9 minutes, 29 seconds

the playing field, so to speak. You’re going to see some sort of salary cap in this bill, too.

1:09:35

1 hour, 9 minutes, 35 seconds

uh for players when it comes to uh some NIL and rev sharing stuff. You’ve seen a lot of schools redirect their uh

1:09:44

1 hour, 9 minutes, 44 seconds

multimedia rights money uh to players to try and help that uh kind of curve kind of go over that salary cap right with

1:09:52

1 hour, 9 minutes, 52 seconds

rev sharing that’s at 22% of your budget. So there’s going to be some things there that if passed that when it becomes law, if it does become law and

1:10:00

1 hour, 10 minutes

gets passed, that’s going to allow these universities and these conferences and the NCAA and the CSC to actually enforce

1:10:07

1 hour, 10 minutes, 7 seconds

these rules that they have in place now that just have really had no teeth and why there have been so many lawsuits.

1:10:14

1 hour, 10 minutes, 14 seconds

Talking with Brandon Marcel from CBSports.com. And then the other piece of news that I know that has dropped since we’ve been on the air, no more powderpuff game that second to

1:10:23

1 hour, 10 minutes, 23 seconds

final week of the regular season. So no more non-conference games there where you’re playing the Citadel or Western

1:10:30

1 hour, 10 minutes, 30 seconds

Carolina or Middle Tennessee, any of that. That’s all gone. It’ll be all conference games in the month of November.

1:10:37

1 hour, 10 minutes, 37 seconds

Yeah, it’s good for the fans and a natural and organic uh um uh transformation here with the introduction of nine conference games

1:10:45

1 hour, 10 minutes, 45 seconds

from eight and you know you guys know it and I’m look trying to find my stats I had picked up here but last year there

1:10:53

1 hour, 10 minutes, 53 seconds

were six games on that weekend that involved FCS or group of six teams and there were only four conference games in

1:11:00

1 hour, 11 minutes

the SEC and only one was against was a ranked on ranked matchup which was OU and Missouri. Meanwhile, the Big 10, you

1:11:08

1 hour, 11 minutes, 8 seconds

know, you look at the SEC the last three years, I should say, they’ve played 17 combined non-conference games on that second to last weekend against FCS or

1:11:17

1 hour, 11 minutes, 17 seconds

group of six teams. The Big 10 has played nothing but conference games on that second to last weekend. 23 conference games in that threeear span.

1:11:25

1 hour, 11 minutes, 25 seconds

So, this helps with the television inventory. It helps with fan interest and, you know, helps spread out, you know, probably the schedule a little bit

1:11:32

1 hour, 11 minutes, 32 seconds

more for these SEC teams. Brandon, you’ve had a great career to get you ready to cover the SEC. You covered uh

1:11:40

1 hour, 11 minutes, 40 seconds

you were an Auburn beat man, a Old Miss beat person, Arkansas beat person. Um when you covered Old Miss at the Clarion

1:11:49

1 hour, 11 minutes, 49 seconds

Ledger in Jackson, uh who was the coach for the Rebels at the time?

1:11:54

1 hour, 11 minutes, 54 seconds

Oh, I I covered Mississippi State actually. Um Oh, okay.

1:11:59

1 hour, 11 minutes, 59 seconds

Yeah, I was Dan Mullen at the time. At the time, Old Miss had um the tail end of Houston Nut and then of course the introduction of uh Hugh Fes and that

1:12:08

1 hour, 12 minutes, 8 seconds

that that that craziness that was which one of which one of those were crazier, Houston Nut or Hugh Freeze?

1:12:16

1 hour, 12 minutes, 16 seconds

I would say what?

1:12:18

1 hour, 12 minutes, 18 seconds

It was a lot of fun. The Egg Bowl rivalry was a lot of fun when Fu got there and Dan was there because Mississippi State was starting to win at

1:12:26

1 hour, 12 minutes, 26 seconds

that point winning nine games a year and miss was trying to get back on track and they hit it big obviously in recruiting getting guys like Robert Kandichi and

1:12:34

1 hour, 12 minutes, 34 seconds

everybody was going what’s missing up there are they doing things legally and all that and Dan Mullen was very much a person who was uh not afraid to kind of

1:12:42

1 hour, 12 minutes, 42 seconds

let his words fly on that and so it was a very fun rivalry to cover in those first couple of years when when uh he was out there.

1:12:50

1 hour, 12 minutes, 50 seconds

Yeah. And Dan used to never uh call Old Miss Old Miss. He would always say the other school, Tiss Tissson, the school up north.

1:12:58

1 hour, 12 minutes, 58 seconds

Right. Right. Lane’s tried that a few times by not mentioning Old Miss, he would just say the the previous school.

1:13:05

1 hour, 13 minutes, 5 seconds

But uh well, from so a guy who’s been around the SEC, just what is your view of of Lane at Old Miss and his his

1:13:13

1 hour, 13 minutes, 13 seconds

switch to LSU, you know, kind of outside looking in. What what what is your uh opinion on on Big Lane?

1:13:21

1 hour, 13 minutes, 21 seconds

Well, I love him as a personality. You know, I’m sure he’ll tell you too. He probably just needs to keep his mouth shut on certain things sometimes and you

1:13:28

1 hour, 13 minutes, 28 seconds

know, he likes to talk and sometimes he says things maybe doesn’t even quite mean or get, you know, misconstrued. Um, I will say this, I was scheduled to fly

1:13:37

1 hour, 13 minutes, 37 seconds

into Baton Rouge and have a one-on-one with him uh the week that the Vanity Fair article came out and uh that was

1:13:44

1 hour, 13 minutes, 44 seconds

cancelled uh by his party and uh I was told he had some event to go to, but um and I’m still working on getting that

1:13:52

1 hour, 13 minutes, 52 seconds

one rescheduled. Uh I’m I know I’m putting like the pressure cooker on LSU, but I hope we can schedule something for that one-on-one. So, I’d love to chat

1:13:59

1 hour, 13 minutes, 59 seconds

with them. But um you know he’s good for the sport because we all love personalities and there’s nothing worse in college football, college athletics

1:14:08

1 hour, 14 minutes, 8 seconds

than a just mundane, boring coach. You guys know that. And uh so that I I love Lane Keith for that.

1:14:15

1 hour, 14 minutes, 15 seconds

How was Lane uh press conference? Uh what what what are your takeaways from his press conference this evening?

1:14:22

1 hour, 14 minutes, 22 seconds

Actually missed it. I was uh outside talking to some ads and uh some uh some other coaches, uh Brent Benal, so I I missed it. one of my B partners was was

1:14:31

1 hour, 14 minutes, 31 seconds

in there and said, so I honestly have no idea what he actually said in there. He could have he could have said he’s going back to Old Miss and I wouldn’t even know.

1:14:38

1 hour, 14 minutes, 38 seconds

We we’d have heard about that. But yeah, but seriously, Brandon, do you do you think that Lane Keifin is uh we always

1:14:47

1 hour, 14 minutes, 47 seconds

compare him to Brian Kelly, of course, but I haven’t heard that one.

1:14:52

1 hour, 14 minutes, 52 seconds

You shouldn’t say compare. I should polar opposites. Contrast. I would say contrast. Yeah.

1:14:57

1 hour, 14 minutes, 57 seconds

There you word I should have used. But but do you think he is uniquely qualified for this era of college football especially?

1:15:05

1 hour, 15 minutes, 5 seconds

Oh, certainly. I mean you I mean the moment he got to Old Miss and the transfer portal was around and then the

1:15:10

1 hour, 15 minutes, 10 seconds

NIL era hit back in 2021 20 uh he was perfectly prepared for that and that’s why they did so well immediately when

1:15:19

1 hour, 15 minutes, 19 seconds

that all came into be. you know, the the nickname of transfer portal king. It’s legit. And you look at the pieces he picked up at Old Miss and he’s just kind

1:15:28

1 hour, 15 minutes, 28 seconds

of supercharged that at LSU. I mean, Sam Levit’s a quarterback that everybody wanted. Um, and listen, I

1:15:36

1 hour, 15 minutes, 36 seconds

it’s going to be interesting just from the standpoint of LSU is obviously a different beast as far as fan expectations, the media coverage than

1:15:44

1 hour, 15 minutes, 44 seconds

anywhere else he’s been other than being the OC at Alabama. and he was protected from that there because assistant coaches didn’t talk under Nick Savings

1:15:52

1 hour, 15 minutes, 52 seconds

in the media. So, but he imagine that assistant coaches don’t talk under Lane Kein. Go ahead.

1:16:00

1 hour, 16 minutes

So, he’s going to have to be measured probably if let’s say LSU losing a couple of games because there will be

1:16:08

1 hour, 16 minutes, 8 seconds

questions of course and I don’t think he’s ever been put in that type of situation.

1:16:14

1 hour, 16 minutes, 14 seconds

Yeah, the pressure cooker here, especially with how high the expectations will be. You know, they lose a couple games early on, it’s uh

1:16:22

1 hour, 16 minutes, 22 seconds

you know, it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts. Brandon, but before we let you get out of here, uh you wrote the article on doing the survey as far

1:16:31

1 hour, 16 minutes, 31 seconds

as the the future on the college football playoff as you’ve spent a couple days there and you’ve talked to more ads and you’ve talked to more

1:16:38

1 hour, 16 minutes, 38 seconds

coaches. How big will that playoff system be in 2027 in your mind?

1:16:44

1 hour, 16 minutes, 44 seconds

Well, I think there’s momentum for 24. I really do. Um, it’s just I the thing is is like the SEC kind of continues to

1:16:53

1 hour, 16 minutes, 53 seconds

kick this fan down the road and by that I mean they just continue this process of let’s get more information. Let’s get more information. Yeah.

1:17:01

1 hour, 17 minutes, 1 second

And no, your your decision- making is only as good as the information provided to you. And so like what kind of information are they actually getting?

1:17:08

1 hour, 17 minutes, 8 seconds

Is it just strictly coming from a perspective of there should be no more than 16? Because you know ESPN has said

1:17:16

1 hour, 17 minutes, 16 seconds

to these conferences, we want nothing larger than 16. A the AC commissioner Jim Phillips said that two weeks ago, which was he said the quiet part out

1:17:24

1 hour, 17 minutes, 24 seconds

loud finally. And you know the Big 10, they’re they’re affiliated with Fox and obviously they want an expanded playoff because they want to get in on that uh

1:17:32

1 hour, 17 minutes, 32 seconds

with some media rights. So, what what what information is the SEC athletic directors and coaches being provided?

1:17:40

1 hour, 17 minutes, 40 seconds

And is kicking the can down the road and continuing this conversation beyond Destin setting something up where maybe these ads who have been maybe kelting a

1:17:49

1 hour, 17 minutes, 49 seconds

little bit more toward 24, at least being interested in it, will that push them back toward the 16 model or just staying at 12? And if that’s the case,

1:17:58

1 hour, 17 minutes, 58 seconds

the longer this goes, I feel like honestly I think I’m thinking the opposite of a lot of people. I think the longer this goes in the SEC, the more likely this thing just stays at 12.

1:18:07

1 hour, 18 minutes, 7 seconds

Brandon, thanks a lot for your time. I know it’s been a busy day. You got a couple more busy days to go. Thanks a lot for spending a few minutes with us. Hey, no problem. See you guys.

We now return to Tiger Rag Radio live from Super Chevy Dealers Studio.

1:19:10

1 hour, 19 minutes, 10 seconds

All right, back here on Tiger Rag Radio as we continue on from the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, the Goodwood Library, Jeff Polmo, Todd Horn, Gwen

1:19:19

1 hour, 19 minutes, 19 seconds

Gilbo with you here tonight. And uh guys, a lot of topics we want to hit on here before we get out. Uh we’ve been kind of bantering about them here. First

1:19:28

1 hour, 19 minutes, 28 seconds

of all, your impressions of Ed Orron returning to the uh turning returning to the coaching staff. Could anything bad come out of this?

1:19:35

1 hour, 19 minutes, 35 seconds

I I don’t I personally don’t think anything bad at all can come out of it.

1:19:40

1 hour, 19 minutes, 40 seconds

I think it’s uh I think it’s a rare move. I mean, I was we were talking about earlier today. Can you imagine like if Brian Kelly had gone

1:19:49

1 hour, 19 minutes, 49 seconds

15 talking about Brian Kelly if Brian Kelly had gone 15 and move on. it’s time to move on at Notre Dame. And then all of a sudden, three years, four years, five, six years

1:19:57

1 hour, 19 minutes, 57 seconds

later, he’s going back as a recruiting specialist.

1:20:01

1 hour, 20 minutes, 1 second

I could see him going back to Grand Valley.

1:20:05

1 hour, 20 minutes, 5 seconds

But but to answer your question, I think it’s a great move for LSU. I think it’s a great move for Lane Kein. I

1:20:13

1 hour, 20 minutes, 13 seconds

think it’s a great move for Ed Oron. And I think it’s one that Louisiana loves.

1:20:18

1 hour, 20 minutes, 18 seconds

Yeah. I think I think it’s an awesome move. and and uh you know it’s good good for Lane to have somebody who’s who’s coached at LSU and coached extremely

1:20:26

1 hour, 20 minutes, 26 seconds

well at LSU and and was a great recruiter of high schools which that’s what Lane wants to do. I mean, I think

1:20:34

1 hour, 20 minutes, 34 seconds

he had a great he basically signed two portal classes in his first class of of 41. And I think that sets them up for

1:20:44

1 hour, 20 minutes, 44 seconds

two years. And I think you’re going to see him go more into high schools from from now on. really he’s still going to

1:20:52

1 hour, 20 minutes, 52 seconds

pick some some big ones from the portal, but I I think with Ed and Cory Raymond, you know, they’re going to just control

1:20:59

1 hour, 20 minutes, 59 seconds

the state and and and not let guys get away like uh Brian Kelly did. Sorry, bring him up again, Todd. So, yeah, that’s but uh you know, and so I think

1:21:09

1 hour, 21 minutes, 9 seconds

that really bodess well for that because he’s going to travel. You know, that was one of the things written about that when it first happened. He’s he’s going to be on off-campus recruiting and he’s

1:21:18

1 hour, 21 minutes, 18 seconds

also a heck of a defensive line coach and and defensive coach. So, that’s going to help uh Blake Baker as well.

1:21:24

1 hour, 21 minutes, 24 seconds

I I I don’t see a a a downsides to it downside to it. The only downside to it is is, you know, he’s he only signed a

1:21:32

1 hour, 21 minutes, 32 seconds

one-year contract. He may want to get a head coach somewhere a coaching job somewhere else. Well, I think the best thing about it, and I saw this on a

1:21:39

1 hour, 21 minutes, 39 seconds

video the other podcast or earlier this week, is Lane said that he can talk to Mike. That’s right.

1:21:46

1 hour, 21 minutes, 46 seconds

The Barto podcast.

1:21:48

1 hour, 21 minutes, 48 seconds

Not a lot of coaches have talked to Mike. In fact, not a lot of people have talked to Mike really.

1:21:52

1 hour, 21 minutes, 52 seconds

Should uh Lane be reprimanded for what he said to Vanity Fair and Old Miss’s I’m alone in this from what I can tell

1:22:00

1 hour, 22 minutes

and I do lead a relatively secluded life, but I don’t think he said anything wrong at all. I think that what he said is true.

1:22:10

1 hour, 22 minutes, 10 seconds

Yeah.

1:22:11

1 hour, 22 minutes, 11 seconds

And I don’t see a problem with it. And I think everybody’s uh acting uh ridiculous.

1:22:17

1 hour, 22 minutes, 17 seconds

I think the reason in my mind, I’m not saying that he should be, but the reason why he’s in trouble is because he said what he said about Old Miss, which Ed

1:22:26

1 hour, 22 minutes, 26 seconds

Orron backed him up with in the interview with uh Mike Datillia, I believe, with WWL. But then when he turned around and said, “Meanwhile at

1:22:33

1 hour, 22 minutes, 33 seconds

LSU, everything is great. we got all this diversity and this and that. That’s really not factually right.

1:22:39

1 hour, 22 minutes, 39 seconds

When you go to the state capital right now and you can cut you can cut the racial tension with a knife over there.

1:22:44

1 hour, 22 minutes, 44 seconds

Well, yeah. And if he if he left the LSU part out, I don’t know. I I I think that’s where I

1:22:52

1 hour, 22 minutes, 52 seconds

think that’s where it really where Miss is saying, “Oh, you’re so you’re so much better than us.” Well, so so then basically you’re saying if they’re going

1:22:59

1 hour, 22 minutes, 59 seconds

to sanction him or they’re going to reprimand him, it should be because he lied about LSU, not because he lied about Well, he he tried to use it as a recruiting advantage, too, right?

1:23:09

1 hour, 23 minutes, 9 seconds

That’s basically what he was doing.

1:23:11

1 hour, 23 minutes, 11 seconds

Yeah, I I think so. But I maybe, but I think the main thing is Lane needs to get Old Miss out of his mind. You know,

1:23:19

1 hour, 23 minutes, 19 seconds

he he’s the one who left like Roanne Roan Davies said. He said, “Hey, leave the leave the girl alone. You left you left her. he needs to move on. He’s

1:23:28

1 hour, 23 minutes, 28 seconds

still mad because he didn’t get the coach in the playoffs. And I think he had a very good argument for that because Miss was better had he stayed

1:23:37

1 hour, 23 minutes, 37 seconds

and been the head coach. And as he said, Pete Golding was in the booth calling plays, which was he was best at. And I

1:23:44

1 hour, 23 minutes, 44 seconds

think Old Miss hurt its chances of winning a national championship by not letting him coach. But I think um I think Lane is is wrong to continue to

1:23:53

1 hour, 23 minutes, 53 seconds

talk about Old Miss, good or bad, uh particularly bad. And as I said last week, you know, Nick Sabin never ever

1:24:02

1 hour, 24 minutes, 2 seconds

said anything bad about LSU when he was with the Dolphins or with Alabama.

1:24:07

1 hour, 24 minutes, 7 seconds

And I I think that’s the way to go. You you stay above it. But Lane, he he he has flashes of immaturity. Well, he I think he learned his lesson because

1:24:16

1 hour, 24 minutes, 16 seconds

today at the SEC spring meetings, he was asked about the game against Old Miss and he said, “I can’t even think about that right now.” We have Clemson first

1:24:23

1 hour, 24 minutes, 23 seconds

and so he gave the proper based on what I can tell now. I haven’t seen the video. I’m just reading the quotes. So maybe something he did say something

1:24:31

1 hour, 24 minutes, 31 seconds

beyond that, but that’s a start. That’s a start where you just say I’m not going to get into that right now. They’ll we’ll have a whole week on that come

1:24:39

1 hour, 24 minutes, 39 seconds

midseptember. Let’s take our final break. When we come back, a little baseball talk here on Tiger Rag Radio from the Super Chevy dealer studio broadcasting today from the Goodwood

1:25:55

1 hour, 25 minutes, 55 seconds

Only a couple more minutes left. Want to thank all our guests tonight. Jeff Duncan, Kent Low, Brandon Marcelo, who uh was kind enough to join us from the

1:26:02

1 hour, 26 minutes, 2 seconds

SEC spring meetings where there’s a lot going on. Uh not a lot going on over at the at Alec Bach Stadium this week, unfortunately. Usually we’re getting

1:26:10

1 hour, 26 minutes, 10 seconds

ready for a regional selection Monday has come and gone and the LC Tigers were not part of the team of 64 after uh

1:26:18

1 hour, 26 minutes, 18 seconds

seeing that experience seeing all the 64 teams that got in. I guess just uh final thoughts wraps on the 2026 season that will that most LSU fans want to forget.

1:26:31

1 hour, 26 minutes, 31 seconds

Yeah. You know what’s what’s amazing about what you just said? The last time they didn’t make it, 2011, they were on the bubble and they thought they were going.

1:26:39

1 hour, 26 minutes, 39 seconds

They were 13 and 17, right? And in 2007 when they didn’t make it, they were also 13 and 17 and they were on the bubble. This year they they

1:26:47

1 hour, 26 minutes, 47 seconds

they knew it was over before it even started. Yeah. You know, it’s it’s amazing how far down Yeah. they went.

1:26:54

1 hour, 26 minutes, 54 seconds

And no Vandy in the tournament either, right?

1:26:56

1 hour, 26 minutes, 56 seconds

Louisville, too. I think Louisville is another team that didn’t make it that’s been a a consistent team that goes every year.

1:27:03

1 hour, 27 minutes, 3 seconds

They were um you know they were a bad team, bad pitching and but then they also really had key injuries because Cooper

1:27:11

1 hour, 27 minutes, 11 seconds

Moore was kind of early in the season and they were already clearly a bad team when they were teetering when when the left fielder Jake Brown

1:27:19

1 hour, 27 minutes, 19 seconds

when Jake Brown was lost uh I’m sorry, right fielder Jake Brown.

1:27:24

1 hour, 27 minutes, 24 seconds

if if he if he would not have got hurt and if Cooper wouldn’t have got hurt, I think they would have probably got in. Could possibly. But but that’s that’s a couple of ifs.

1:27:32

1 hour, 27 minutes, 32 seconds

Yeah.

1:27:32

1 hour, 27 minutes, 32 seconds

But they uh you know, they got some key players they got to get in the portal we were just talking about. They got to get a starter uh a rotation starter probably

1:27:40

1 hour, 27 minutes, 40 seconds

because the three coming back. There’s no Friday night guy out of Kase Evans and William Schmidt. Maybe maybe Cooper Moore.

1:27:47

1 hour, 27 minutes, 47 seconds

I think they need two topline pitchers out of the transfer port. No question.

1:27:52

1 hour, 27 minutes, 52 seconds

Yeah, for sure. and not from a mid major. Go out there and see if you can’t get somebody from whe whether it’s Mississippi State, whoever, you know, just uh someone significant like that.

1:28:03

1 hour, 28 minutes, 3 seconds

All right, guys. That does it for the show. It was a good show. Thanks a lot for joining us here on Tiger Rag Radio.
