SEC Presidents Hold Off On Passing Down Any Punishments Against LSU For Pursuit Of NFL Players

LSU did not receive any fines, suspensions or penalties after a meeting of Southeastern Conference presidents and chancellors on Thursday, but it is not out of the woods yet. The SEC released a statement following the meeting.

“The presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference met Thursday by videoconference to discuss regent matters involving conference expectations and responsibilities. Those discussions will continue as the conference and its member universities work toward an appropriate resolution,” the statement reads.

SEC officials were expected to discuss possible punishments and penalties for the LSU football program and head coach Lane Kiffin. Presidents were initially scheduled to vote on expelling LSU from the SEC at the meeting, but that vote was taken off the agenda on Wednesday. The non-decision does not mean that LSU has avoided consequences altogether, but it will have to wait a little longer to find out whether they will be passed down and what they could be.

The de-escalation in the conflict between the SEC and its member school comes after LSU elected to fill the final two spots of its 105-man football roster without adding tight end Dae’Quan Wright or defensive tackle Zxavian Harris. The pair was part of a group of class of 2022 athletes that won a preliminary injunction to return for a fifth season of college sports. That injunction granted by Baton Rouge Judge William Jorden also blocked the SEC from enforcing rule punishing schools for signing former NFL, NBA and WNBA players.

Although it was legal to roster them as a result of the ruling, LSU did not list Wright and Harris on its roster prior to its season opener versus Clemson. Instead, fearing SEC appeals and a federal lawsuit against the school, the school chose to leave two roster spots empty which would allow for the addition of Wright and Harris later in the season. Those slots were filled by cornerback Aiden Anding and defensive end Gabriel Reliford on Tuesday night, meaning Wright and Harris cannot be signed this season.

LSU still faces the lawsuit filed by the SEC in the U.S. District Court for Northern Alabama, but a temporary restraining order hearing in that case was postponed on Wednesday without a given reason.
