LSU defensive back Dashawn Spears, who plays the star position for the Tigers, is done for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, LSU coach Lane Kiffin confirmed on Monday at his weekly press conference.
LSU starting tight end Trey’Dez Green, though, is expected back with a less significant knee injury. But Green is expected to miss Saturday’s home game against Texas A&M and possibly a game or two after that.
“It’s unfortunate,” Kiffin said of Spears, a junior from Denham Springs High who started the first three games this season at star after playing safety mainly as a backup in 2025 and ’24 with four starts.
“He’s a really unique player. Really long (6-foot-3, 209 pounds). He’s a special player. It’s going to be a really tough loss for us,” Kiffin said.
The star position was made for a player like Spears as it combines defensive back and linebacker qualities. Sophomore CJ Jimcoily (6-3, 218) replaced Spears after he was injured in the second quarter of the Tigers’ 32-24 loss at Ole Miss on Saturday. Kiffin said he and defensive coordinator Blake Baker would also consider redshirt freshman safety Jhase Thomas for play at the star.
Green, a junior from Zachary High who leads the team in receiving yards with 222 on 14 receptions and in yards per catch at 15.9, left the Ole Miss game at the beginning of the fourth quarter after his fourth catch that put him at 60 yards for the game. He was helped off with an injury to his right knee. Kiffin did not comment on Green’s injury, which is the coach’s philosophy. But Tiger Rag sources and multiple other reports have said Green injured his knee but did not suffer any torn ligaments, and he is expected to play after missing multiple games.
After Texas A&M, LSU hosts McNeese State on Oct. 3 before traveling to Kentucky for a game on Oct. 10.
Reserve wide receiver Phillip Wright III, a redshirt freshman from Destrehan High near New Orleans, has also been ruled out for the season with an injury. The only returning receiver from last season, Wright was ruled out for the Ole Miss game with an injury suffered against Louisiana Tech the previous week. Kiffin praised Wright’s play in the opener against Clemson as he caught three passes for 70 yards with a 30-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile, LSU special assistant coach for defense and recruiting Ed Orgeron could be heard from the LSU football operations building after Kiffin’s press conference on Monday.
“Hey, how you doing?” Orgeron said with his booming voice that was overheard on the first floor from the second floor as reporters left the building. “I’m doing good.”
Orgeron has been ill for the past several weeks and missed several practices and all three of LSU’s games. He may have a chance to be on the sidelines Saturday when the No. 10 Tigers (2-1, 0-1 SEC) host No. 23 Texas A&M (2-1, 0-1 SEC) at 6:30 p.m. on ABC.
