Jake Latz’s third collegiate start will be for all the marbles.

Paul Mainieri said prior to Tuesday’s regional championship game that the redshirt-freshman lefty would get the start in the decisive contest against Rice scheduled for 4 p.m.

Latz worked a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in his last outing, a relief appearance against Utah Valley in the Baton Rouge Regional opener Friday. He last started against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament opener in Hoover, tossing two scoreless innings.

The Owls will counter with sophomore right-hander Willy Amador, who is 2-1 while pitching to a 5.88 ERA in 40.1 innings of work.

The winner of today’s game will advance to player Costal Carolina in a super regional that’ll run Saturday-Sunday-Monday. The first two games are slated to begin at 8 p.m. with the third (if necessary) having a few time slots to potentially fit into.
