Only rain and lightning could stop LSU sophomore golfer Ryleigh Knaub on Friday as she advanced to the round of 16 at the 126th United States Women’s Amateur tournament at The Honors course in Ooltewah, Tennessee.
Play is expected to continue late Saturday and Sunday after heavy rains and lightning that struck a tree near the 17th tee on Friday halted play. The tournament continued Saturday morning and into the late afternoon on The Golf Channel.
Knaub advanced by beating Anna Fang, who is 51st in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Knaub’s par on the par-4 fifth hole put her up by two strokes. She added birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to increase her lead by a shot.
LSU freshman Raegan Denton, who advanced on Thursday, fell to Australian Pimchompoo “Pinky” Chaisilprungruang of Thailand on Friday in a playoff.
