LSU incoming freshman Raegan Denton and sophomore Ryleigh Knaub advanced to the round of 32 that begins Friday at the United States Women’s Amateur golf tournament on the Honors Club course in Ooltewah, Tennessee.
Television coverage of the tournament began at 9:30 a.m. Friday on The Golf Channel and can also be seen live at Golfchannel.com. Tape delay coverage of the event will air on Friday night on The Golf Channel.
Each advanced easily with victories in their opening matches to advance after two rounds of stroke play qualifying before match play opens in one of the country’s most prestigious women’s amateur golf events.
Denton, who is from Adelaide, Australia, had seven birdies with five of those good enough to win holes. Knaub, from Debary, Florida, was 2-under through the 14 holes and basically took control from there.
On Friday, Denton will face Pimchompoo “Pinky” Chaisilprungruang of Thailand and UNC-Charlotte. Denton is ranked 47th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings while Chaisilprungruang is No. 66 and may have the longest first and last names in sports at 27 letters total.
Knaub faces 17-year-old Anna Fang (51st in the World Amateur rankings) of San Diego, California. Chaisilprungruang won her first-round match over Australian Jazy Roberts, while Fang beat Mary Miller.
If Denton and/or Knaub advance, they will play their round of 16 match on Friday afternoon.
