and good evening everyone. Welcome to another edition of Tiger Rag Radio tonight from the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard.

1:10

1 minute, 10 seconds

We’re here four times a year and we’re here tonight as we are getting ready for LSU Miss coming up on Saturday night in

1:18

1 minute, 18 seconds

2:01

2 minutes, 1 second

Derry Beckwiff, former LSU Tiger. He will join us as well, part of that 2007 National Championship team. And uh we

2:08

2 minutes, 8 seconds

also will have an opportunity here tonight to uh and I’m wondering if there’s uh it it happened once before

2:16

2 minutes, 16 seconds

where we had a lawsuit filed before we had Sam Hutchkins on from the Clarion Ledger. I don’t think we’ve had any lawsuits filed today, but Sam Hutchkins

2:24

2 minutes, 24 seconds

will give us the perspective from the Old Miss side when we’ll talk to him in hour number two. Guys, we’ve been waiting for this game since the uh I

2:33

2 minutes, 33 seconds

guess you could say officially since the first week of December after Lane Kein was introduced and now it’s finally

2:40

2 minutes, 40 seconds

here. It’s a big game. Uh a lot on the line. It’s important. I think like Glenn said earlier today at the end of the

2:47

2 minutes, 47 seconds

year, it’s probably not going to matter all that much to either one of these teams seasons in on the whole as to who

2:54

2 minutes, 54 seconds

won this game. But I think there’s a lot of pride on the line and I think it’s a a important game for the early season uh

3:01

3 minutes, 1 second

and and playoff positioning early on and and the SEC championship etc. I think we’re going to go in depth on it, but

3:09

3 minutes, 9 seconds

I’m you know Glenn’s going to the game on Friday. I think he’s leaving. He’s going to be there Saturday. I’m worried about his security. [laughter] I’m worried that he’s going to be safe. You

3:18

3 minutes, 18 seconds

know, he’s such a popular person with both crowds. You know, the both the miss fans and and a lot of the uh uh you

3:26

3 minutes, 26 seconds

know, what do we call them? Uh Old Miss fans.

3:29

3 minutes, 29 seconds

Yeah. All the LSU fans that are, you know, a certain way. Yeah, I got you.

3:33

3 minutes, 33 seconds

Um but you know, so Glenn, I’m I’m sincerely I’m praying for you. Uh I’ll be thinking about you and don’t call me if anything [laughter] happens. Well,

3:42

3 minutes, 42 seconds

like many things in sports, this has already happened. When when Alabama came to uh LSU in in 2008, it was very

3:51

3 minutes, 51 seconds

similar. I remember seeing Miss Terry Sabin walking to her suite uh near the press box, and there was three policemen

3:59

3 minutes, 59 seconds

around her. Uh so, I’m I’m I’m sure it’s going to be similar um for for Lane and

4:05

4 minutes, 5 seconds

his his uh party. uh you know if I’m not sure who if that’s going to be Lil Booy or [laughter] that’s going to be Libby

4:13

4 minutes, 13 seconds

or or who but uh no uh you know the the I was talking to an Old Miss uh official

4:23

4 minutes, 23 seconds

today about the security and and really uh you know what Old Miss is going to do is they’re going to beef up the security

4:31

4 minutes, 31 seconds

in the stadium. you know, they’re going to have more police than they had like for last week’s game against Charlotte,

4:38

4 minutes, 38 seconds

but really the as far as lane security, you know, that’s the LSU end, you know, so so it’s it’s it’s really two different things like like you know, the

4:46

4 minutes, 46 seconds

home team doesn’t protect the visiting coach.

4:49

4 minutes, 49 seconds

They have their own state police and and I expect them to have more. And then there’s also um there’s probably

4:58

4 minutes, 58 seconds

going to be more just from I know from doing games like this in the past there’s probably going to be more plain clothes policemen and this happened with

5:05

5 minutes, 5 seconds

LSU. I mean this happened with Tennessee in Alabama. We wrote a lot about it when I was at Outkick. You know they had an incident after the game in Knoxville and

5:13

5 minutes, 13 seconds

then they had increased security the next year in Tuscaloosa. So, you know, the SEC teams are kind of used to this, but this is this is different because,

5:21

5 minutes, 21 seconds

you know, the Sabbin was a few years removed from when he left LSU, whereas Keifin was just at Old Miss, you know, less than a year ago, and now here he is

5:30

5 minutes, 30 seconds

going back uh to to coach there. He he coached in November, his last home game at Old Miss, and now here it is, it’s

5:38

5 minutes, 38 seconds

only uh September, and he’s going back to Miss as LSU’s coach. So, this is pretty wild. I hope I hope the fans in the stands behave amongst themselves

5:47

5 minutes, 47 seconds

because wasn’t it just a few years ago that some LSU uh guy beat the heck out of an Old Miss fan somewhere in was it a

5:55

5 minutes, 55 seconds

football game or a baseball game? I forgot what it was.

5:57

5 minutes, 57 seconds

Yeah, I think I kind of remember what you were talking about.

5:59

5 minutes, 59 seconds

Huge news and there was like, you know, viral videos of him just pummeling the guy in the stands. I can’t remember if

6:06

6 minutes, 6 seconds

it was football or baseball. Well, the uh I think it might be baseball you’re thinking about, but still. Yeah.

6:13

6 minutes, 13 seconds

The the uh I know Golding has been, you know, trying to counsel his fans to uh to behave, right?

6:21

6 minutes, 21 seconds

You know, uh but uh it’s, you know, there’s there’s so much uh anticipated and expected, you know, it’s off, you know,

6:30

6 minutes, 30 seconds

probably not much will happen. You know, [laughter] usually it comes out of nowhere when those when those crowd control things happen. What did you guys

6:37

6 minutes, 37 seconds

think about Kein on Monday talking about the fact that Golding has the advantage

6:45

6 minutes, 45 seconds

over him because he was able to listen to him talk about all the things he did not want to go against defensively for

6:52

6 minutes, 52 seconds

three years. See, I was asked the same question on Monday when I was on with uh WWL and I thought the advantage and I

7:00

7 minutes

thought the advantage was with Lane because he knows what Trinidad Chamblas doesn’t he knows how to put Trinidad

7:09

7 minutes, 9 seconds

Chamblas or what Trinidad Chamblas is uncomfortable with. And I thought that would be a huge advantage for LSU going into this game. Now, I think what Lane

7:19

7 minutes, 19 seconds

is trying to do, it’s this I think that comment that he made there is very similar to the comment where he said that the pressure is on Old Miss.

7:27

7 minutes, 27 seconds

They’re the ones that have the two Heisman Trophy candidates in the back field. We we meaning LSU as he described it went seven and six.

7:38

7 minutes, 38 seconds

You’re on the team.

7:38

7 minutes, 38 seconds

No, but I’m saying I’m talking as he was quoting Lane. Quoting Lane. I got confused.

7:44

7 minutes, 44 seconds

LSU went seven and six last year. They of course went to the semifinals of the playoffs. They’re the better team.

7:51

7 minutes, 51 seconds

They’re the ones that should win this game. But yet the oddsmakers have LSU a three and a half threepoint favorite.

7:56

7 minutes, 56 seconds

Well, I got news for you. If LSU turns the ball over four times in a row in the first half, it’s going to be a blowout.

8:01

8 minutes, 1 second

Yes. And they will not be on the happy side of it.

8:04

8 minutes, 4 seconds

I I think Lane made a very interesting point about Golding having an advantage and he was talking about just from a coaching perspective. He didn’t discuss

8:13

8 minutes, 13 seconds

the advantages he you spoke of that he has because acknowledge I I guess what I’m saying is he’s trying to put every like that miss has

8:21

8 minutes, 21 seconds

everything going for them and LSU is is the is the true underdog in this game in so many different ways.

8:29

8 minutes, 29 seconds

Well, he said Miss has more pressure on them. That’s not going for miss. That’s that’s not going for them. They have more pressure on them. So, he said two different things. Mhm.

8:38

8 minutes, 38 seconds

On one hand, he said Miss has the pressure on them, which I agree with because they are at home. They do have a better team and they have a firstear

8:45

8 minutes, 45 seconds

coach, which is very important. He’s a first year head coach. And uh you know, he he did coach in some playoff games,

8:54

8 minutes, 54 seconds

but it’s a little different. Um but but the thing that I thought Lane made a great point about what he was saying was

9:01

9 minutes, 1 second

that when he was coaching under Nick Sabin, the head coach does most of the talking.

9:09

9 minutes, 9 seconds

Okay. So they let the staff know more of what they do. Okay. So Lane said he benefited more from that when he went

9:17

9 minutes, 17 seconds

against Nick as a head coach miss Alabama than than what Nick knew about him because Nick was doing all the

9:24

9 minutes, 24 seconds

coaching and the talking because Nick coaches his coaches. Okay, that’s what Lane was saying. And Lane coaches his coaches. So Golding knows more about

9:32

9 minutes, 32 seconds

Lane than than Lane knows about Golding. That was his point. I thought it I thought it was kind of interesting and it made sense. That’s why I said that that Lane

9:41

9 minutes, 41 seconds

said that Golding got to hear everything he didn’t like to go against offensively and as opposed to reciprocating with

9:49

9 minutes, 49 seconds

things. But but Lane still knows what Golding doesn’t like and what his weaknesses are.

9:54

9 minutes, 54 seconds

It’s a chess match. It’s a chess match to Jeff’s point. You know, he Lane is doing every single thing he can do right now

10:02

10 minutes, 2 seconds

to relieve any outside pressure on LSU and just get them to concentrate. I will take issue with one thing you said

10:09

10 minutes, 9 seconds

though. I know that going into the season, we thought Miss was better. I think so far through two games this season, even though LSU played horribly

10:18

10 minutes, 18 seconds

in the first half against Louisiana Tech, the Miss is not better than LSU right now. They have a better offense,

10:26

10 minutes, 26 seconds

they have a better quarterback, and they have a better running back. That’s it.

10:31

10 minutes, 31 seconds

Maybe maybe the offensive line is a little bit stronger than LSU’s offensive line, but the rest of the position groups go to LSU.

10:39

10 minutes, 39 seconds

Yeah. Well, there’s only two games in the season. I mean, if if you’re looking at it going into the season, you got a returning playoff team,

10:47

10 minutes, 47 seconds

right, that’s returning a lot of players.

10:49

10 minutes, 49 seconds

Whereas, you probably LSU may have a more talented overall roster than Old Miss, but not together yet. But certainly they’re playing very well

10:58

10 minutes, 58 seconds

early and really miss hasn’t really put up good numbers yet offensively.

11:02

11 minutes, 2 seconds

And Miss has 17 busted coverages through two games in They’ve played two better teams though.

11:06

11 minutes, 6 seconds

I would say I would say they played one better team.

11:09

11 minutes, 9 seconds

I would say Charlotte’s probably as good as Tech, but it’s it’s close.

11:14

11 minutes, 14 seconds

I would say Tech’s probably the best team that besides I’d say Louisville one, Tech 2, Charlotte three, and Clemson four.

11:22

11 minutes, 22 seconds

I wasn’t very impressed with Tech because I just know how bad Northwestern State [laughter] is.

11:27

11 minutes, 27 seconds

Well, I think Tech I think Tech and we can have Case chime in here. He’s the Louisiana Tech grad. But how objective [laughter] is it though?

11:35

11 minutes, 35 seconds

But I I I had a feeling uh not necessarily 10-7 at halftime, but the one thing that Louisiana Tech has been

11:44

11 minutes, 44 seconds

able to do with Sunny Cumby is they’ve been able to put together a defense and there were experienced guys on that defensive team, especially at the linebacker position.

11:53

11 minutes, 53 seconds

I was going to say those linebackers were were key like Kobe Fields. Obviously, he is an SEC player. He’s played for two SEC

12:02

12 minutes, 2 seconds

schools, South Carolina and LSU. He’s a guy that if he didn’t get hurt last year, one and a half.

12:08

12 minutes, 8 seconds

Okay. Still, [laughter] if he didn’t get hurt last year, he’s most likely in the NFL this season.

12:16

12 minutes, 16 seconds

Are is it Are you Case or are you No, but I’m just I I’ll set it up for Case and Case could finish that can fill in the blanks. But I had a feeling that

12:24

12 minutes, 24 seconds

Louisiana Tech’s defense could potentially test LSU. Now, to hold them to 10 points at halftime, I didn’t think that was the case, but that was my feeling going into the game. case.

12:34

12 minutes, 34 seconds

I just want to keep one thing going. Can we let Case a recurring theme though? I I I I turned the case at halftime or right before halftime. I said, “I’m out of here. LSU is going to blow them out.

12:44

12 minutes, 44 seconds

Win by 35.” Case, you did say that, but I don’t know if that’s the same hot take that the uh the Clemson blowout was after two drives.

12:53

12 minutes, 53 seconds

All right. Tech I don’t know if Tech had a first down in the first half. I think most people watching that game could have tell could tell that a blowout was

13:00

13 minutes

uh in the cards for that one. I do think Tech is better is is is better and will be better than Charlotte this season.

13:08

13 minutes, 8 seconds

Uh Charlotte’s really struggled the last couple years and uh Tech’s just like Jeff was saying defensively under Sunny Cumby the last couple seasons and

13:16

13 minutes, 16 seconds

they’ve done it under two different defensive coordinators now. Uh but now it’s their second year under Luke Olsen.

13:21

13 minutes, 21 seconds

They’ve been able to give teams trouble with this 33-35 and the turnovers that they caused against LSU. Yes, Sam Levit

13:28

13 minutes, 28 seconds

had some errand throws, but they were, I think, second in the nation last year in interceptions. They were first in defensive touchdowns. So, a pick six is

13:36

13 minutes, 36 seconds

not nothing not anything new for for Tech.

13:39

13 minutes, 39 seconds

Well, yeah. I’ll tell you what the biggest thing that I’m concerned about from the Tech game going into the LSU Miss game.

13:46

13 minutes, 46 seconds

You know, we have to hit a break. Do you want to make that a teaser?

13:49

13 minutes, 49 seconds

Yeah, let’s make that a teaser. I’ll tell you when we come [laughter] back. Okay.

13:51

13 minutes, 51 seconds

So, where did you and Tech go at halftime? Cuz Tech wasn’t there in the second half either. [laughter] Did y’all go out somewhere? Hey, hey, hey. We’re going to break.

14:00

14 minutes

We’re going to go to break. Yeah, you went to break at halftime.

14:02

14 minutes, 2 seconds

[laughter]

14:02

14 minutes, 2 seconds

We’re going to go to break. When we come back, we’ll find out Todd’s biggest concerns going into this game and we’ll get into a lot more, so stay tuned. This

We’ll hear from some library folks a little bit later on to find out about all the great things that are happening with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library

15:10

system. But in the meantime, obviously our attention is on LSU Old Miss on Saturday night. And before we went to

15:17

15 minutes, 17 seconds

our first break, Todd was about ready to tell us some of his big concerns going into this game.

15:23

15 minutes, 23 seconds

Well, I have I have your typical five key points. Yeah. But that’s not my biggest concern. My biggest concern is what I think Louisiana Tech exposed. It

15:32

15 minutes, 32 seconds

was obvious. I mean, LSU could not run the football.

15:35

15 minutes, 35 seconds

They could not run the football. And it was not because Tech overpowered them in the trenches. It was because they put

15:42

15 minutes, 42 seconds

pressure on pressure points late and totally LSU couldn’t execute. Well, it’s

15:49

15 minutes, 49 seconds

going to be a totally different situation when you’ve got a uh what 65,000 screaming maniac fans uh

15:57

15 minutes, 57 seconds

screaming for vengeance and the pressure is going to be 20 times greater than it was on them there. And you don’t think

16:05

16 minutes, 5 seconds

Pete Golding picked up on that? That’s going to be the biggest thing that I think Lane Keifin and LSU are working on this week is making sure the

16:13

16 minutes, 13 seconds

communication and the execution uh on late run blitz packages and and late signals from the defense going in. I

16:21

16 minutes, 21 seconds

want to talk to Derry about that when when Derry comes on. But, you know, we did some Tiger Rag analysis uh using uh

16:30

16 minutes, 30 seconds

uh Pro Football Focus the Pro Football Focus rankings uh grades and we amended them a little bit

16:36

16 minutes, 36 seconds

in our analysis based on uh based on snap counts. Um and the things that

16:44

16 minutes, 44 seconds

stood out to me were the number one thing is going to be can LSU stop Lacy without sacrificing its safeties? And what I mean by that is

16:53

16 minutes, 53 seconds

the way the matchup looks right now, LSU is going to have to use Kulie to stop the run up the middle. Um,

17:01

17 minutes, 1 second

and that that’s going to hurt LSU’s ability because LSU is actually showing weakness on on the corners. And so Miss

17:10

17 minutes, 10 seconds

has good receivers that are going to be able to uh if they’re able to take away a safety from coverage, it’s going to hurt the the LSU corner coverage. So

17:19

17 minutes, 19 seconds

that’s that’s a concern. So can the can can LSU’s quarterback survive when Miss isolates them because they’re likely to

17:25

17 minutes, 25 seconds

do that. And and the third one was can can uh Green continue to force uh not so

17:34

17 minutes, 34 seconds

much making key catches like he did last week, although that’s going to be important, but can he continue to force Pete Golding in the defense this week to

17:43

17 minutes, 43 seconds

reveal their defense by putting him in motion and and making him go different places to make them identify what they’re going to run so Levit can

17:52

17 minutes, 52 seconds

identify it early. That’s going to be a key. Um, and can I can’t say Prince’s last name to save my life. You man, mail him.

17:59

17 minutes, 59 seconds

Yeah. But it’s up to Prince and Gerald’s to uh change the clock inside of Chambless Chamblas’s head because he has

18:07

18 minutes, 7 seconds

not been uh pressured hardly at all this year or last year for that matter. And he seems to and Lane talked about how

18:15

18 minutes, 15 seconds

he’s able to evade pressure. LSU is going to have to put pressure on him.

18:18

18 minutes, 18 seconds

One of the kryptonites for Blake Baker has been mobile quarterbacks. Does that storyline or trend ch start to change on Saturday night?

18:27

18 minutes, 27 seconds

Well, I think I think I think that LSU skill-wise and talent-wise, speedwise, and power-wise is a much better defense

18:36

18 minutes, 36 seconds

this year than they have been in those past two years when Baker was susceptible to that. But again, it’s going to go back to those pressure points. If if if miss is able to

18:43

18 minutes, 43 seconds

manipulate LSU’s pressure points, they’re going to they’re going to open things up and that that will be a problem if they’re able to do that.

18:51

18 minutes, 51 seconds

Well, I was, you know, Lane said after the game as to what you were talking about a minute ago, Todd, he said Old Miss, I mean, he said, um, Louisiana

18:58

18 minutes, 58 seconds

Tech was moving guys right before the snap and kind of throwing his guys off, but, you know, I thought LSU was the quick team, you know, and and we were

19:07

19 minutes, 7 seconds

talking about how quick their tempo was and it really looked quick against Clemson and then Lane said they got quicker

19:14

19 minutes, 14 seconds

in the second half, right? But, uh, you know, and they broke some plays and they dominated the second half, but that it

19:22

19 minutes, 22 seconds

kind of surprised me that as quick as LSU was going, it wasn’t quick enough for Tech’s defense.

19:28

19 minutes, 28 seconds

Well, so, I mean, Tech’s defense was quicker.

19:31

19 minutes, 31 seconds

Well, what what what I saw was that in the Clemson game, LSU basically made Clemson declare their defense all every play

19:40

19 minutes, 40 seconds

just from the get-go. They were lining up fast, but they were taking their time. Levit was getting a good read and and Tech was not making their call until

19:49

19 minutes, 49 seconds

the last second and they were lining up multiple people in the gaps and confusing the blocking schemes. And so that I think that’s really what was

19:57

19 minutes, 57 seconds

going on mainly was that LSU was trying to do the same thing they did against Tech, which is line up quickly but then

20:04

20 minutes, 4 seconds

make the reads and make their calls, be patient with that. And and Tech was just basically saying, “We’re not going to do

20:12

20 minutes, 12 seconds

it till the last minute. were going to play charades with you all game.

20:16

20 minutes, 16 seconds

So that’s what Pete’s going to do. You think?

20:18

20 minutes, 18 seconds

Well, I think that that exposed LSU. And then when you break it down, LSU’s guards are not playing well.

20:25

20 minutes, 25 seconds

Didn’t play well in the first week either, right? And of course, Weston Davis scored horribly uh before he was injured, and we don’t even know what his

20:32

20 minutes, 32 seconds

status is uh at at left tackle or right tackle, I should say, um this week. Uh

20:40

20 minutes, 40 seconds

so I think there’s that’s a big question mark. What’s your concern level for the offensive line? We got about a minute and a half. One to five with five being the the most concern. What What is it?

20:50

20 minutes, 50 seconds

I’m a three and a half. I’m a three and a half.

20:52

20 minutes, 52 seconds

Yeah, me me too. Cuz I mean it, you know, they they couldn’t run up the middle. It was ridiculous. And And And they gave up five sacks or Yeah.

21:00

21 minutes

You know that. And a lot more hurries and a lot more negative plays. And And as good as Tech’s defense is under Sunny

21:08

21 minutes, 8 seconds

Comi, uh that’s not an an SEC level defense. still, even though they have a couple of players that are really good, uh LSU is going to have to show vast

21:16

21 minutes, 16 seconds

improvement and Pete Golden’s still calling the defensive plays.

21:19

21 minutes, 19 seconds

Yeah. Now, at the same time, you know, I know we only have a few seconds, but LSU’s got the advantage in the middle of

21:26

21 minutes, 26 seconds

the defense and the safeties. So, it it’s again, it’s if I’m miss, I’m giving Lacy the ball and I’m saying go right at him and let’s see if they can stop us.

21:36

21 minutes, 36 seconds

and LSU’s got to try to stop them without bringing a safety up because then they’re going to expose their corners and and that will help Shamblas

21:45

21 minutes, 45 seconds

and those two wide receivers who are very talented.

21:48

21 minutes, 48 seconds

Yep. Deuce Alexander 13 catches, 235 yards, and a couple touchdowns through two games. Let’s take a break. When we come back, we’ll have our first guest of

21:56

21 minutes, 56 seconds

the night, Jimmy Manasse. He’ll join us when we come back.

This is Tiger Rag Radio. [music] Hey, we’re back here on Tiger Rag Radio from the East Baton Rouge Parish Main

22:38

22 minutes, 38 seconds

Library on Goodwood Boulevard. Jeff Blurmo along with Todd Horn and Glenn Gilbo. And it’s a pleasure to have our

22:46

22 minutes, 46 seconds

next guest, really our first guest of the night. I’ve known him for a very long time. and he has been involved with LSU athletics for a very long time going

22:54

22 minutes, 54 seconds

back to his days where his father Paul Manasse was the sports information director at LSU. It’s criminal defense

23:02

23 minutes, 2 seconds

attorney Jimmy Manasse who will be uh taking over as a judge in January.

23:08

23 minutes, 8 seconds

You’ll be sworn in as one of the new judges for the 19th Judicial District.

23:13

23 minutes, 13 seconds

Jimmy, thanks a lot for joining us here on Tiger Rag Radio. How you doing tonight?

23:17

23 minutes, 17 seconds

I am doing fantastic. I feel like I’m in front of a very good group here. I feel like Sesame Street. One one of these

23:25

23 minutes, 25 seconds

things is not like the others and I think I’m that other thing.

23:28

23 minutes, 28 seconds

Well, I wanted to sing Here Come the Judge. Here Come the Judge, but I [laughter] couldn’t get Jeff to do it.

23:34

23 minutes, 34 seconds

But I did, Jimmy, I This is Todd and I do want to thank you for joining us tonight. Uh, I wanted to ask you, I mean, right off the bat, you know,

23:42

23 minutes, 42 seconds

you’ve you’ve your father helped shape, you know, how generations of of people understood LSU athletics. Of course,

23:50

23 minutes, 50 seconds

Paul Manasso was the longtime LSU SID and a mentor to so many people, including uh, one and only Glenn Gilbo.

23:58

23 minutes, 58 seconds

I don’t know if he would claim that or not, but how has LSU athletic changed in over the time that you know you’ve been familiar

24:06

24 minutes, 6 seconds

which is more than 50 years and and if I’m not mistaken you’ve only missed one home game in 50 years. So I want you to get into that but first how’s it changed over the years?

24:17

24 minutes, 17 seconds

So it is so much different than the way that it was when my dad was here. Um it’s just it’s just not even the same

24:25

24 minutes, 25 seconds

kind of place. It was really almost like a mom and pop shop uh back in back in those days. So my my dad went to LSU to

24:34

24 minutes, 34 seconds

school and he left to go to in World War II uh in the Air Force and when he came back he ran baseball teams up in Monroe,

24:42

24 minutes, 42 seconds

Shreport, Dallas, then went to Denver to run the Denver Bears and the owner of the Denver Bears became the original owner of the Denver Broncos. And so my

24:50

24 minutes, 50 seconds

dad became the first PR director for the Denver Broncos. and and that was just a fly by night organization, the old AFL

24:58

24 minutes, 58 seconds

back in those days. So my dad was there for a couple of years, came home after about five or six years, came home to

25:05

25 minutes, 5 seconds

take care of his uh family who had had his mom and dad, my grandparents had health issues in Shreport. And so my dad went there, brought family home there.

25:14

25 minutes, 14 seconds

We went to Louisiana Tech uh Terry Bradshaw’s senior year and then came to LSU in 1969. And so when I was a little

25:21

25 minutes, 21 seconds

kid, uh Terry Bradshaw taught me how to throw a spiral and Pete Maravic taught me uh spent an afternoon with me to teach me how to shoot layups. Um and

25:30

25 minutes, 30 seconds

you would have thought you’d have been a better You would have thought you’d have been a better athlete. [laughter] I I only spent a short period of time with them though. That you have to have

25:38

25 minutes, 38 seconds

something [laughter] to work with to begin with.

25:41

25 minutes, 41 seconds

But yeah, but it was just so the the whole athletic department, I mean, was just a a small group of of people, you

25:49

25 minutes, 49 seconds

know, the budget was, you know, a couple of million dollars. It’s not like it is now. We we used to have we lived at the corner of Ferndale and Hollale. And I’ve

25:57

25 minutes, 57 seconds

spent probably from second grade until I finished law school on campus just about every day. And I would go to my dad’s

26:04

26 minutes, 4 seconds

office uh instead of a country club, you know, I would go hang around the bowels of Tiger Stadium. I would go play in the

26:12

26 minutes, 12 seconds

assembly center. I’d go spend time on the floor of Coach Mack’s office. I’d go, you know, hang out with in Coach

26:18

26 minutes, 18 seconds

Brown’s office. Um, you know, that’s just the way it was. On Saturdays during the off season, my mother and some other

26:26

26 minutes, 26 seconds

ladies would host a breakfast on on Saturday mornings. And I mean, you’d have players, coaches, administration,

26:35

26 minutes, 35 seconds

staff, people, you know, the chancellor would come. I mean, everybody would show up at our house and in our backyard. We would host, you know, these big

26:42

26 minutes, 42 seconds

breakfast with, you know, 40, 50, 60 people. Uh, so again, it was just a it was just a family back then. Uh, and I

26:50

26 minutes, 50 seconds

and I know that there’s a lot of that now, but it’s just so big, so enormous a number of people. When I was in college, Glenn and I worked for my dad in sports

26:59

26 minutes, 59 seconds

information as students along with Scott Frell, who was who later became a sports editor at the Streetport Times, and Her

27:06

27 minutes, 6 seconds

Vincent. And it was the four of us were were the uh were the student workers.

27:11

27 minutes, 11 seconds

Nowadays, when you go over there, there’s there’s like 20 or 30 student workers, it seems. I don’t know exactly how many. Um but it’s just amazing how

27:19

27 minutes, 19 seconds

many people and how they can organize all those people is just amazing to me. Well, what what you you know, it’s true.

27:27

27 minutes, 27 seconds

You’ve only missed one game in 50 years, one home game in 50 years. Why Why did you do that? What happened?

27:35

27 minutes, 35 seconds

Long longer than that. So actually I started going in 1969. So I’ve only missed one home game since 1969. This is

27:43

27 minutes, 43 seconds

my 50th season of actually working in the press box.

27:48

27 minutes, 48 seconds

So I started I started in 1977 uh working in the press box and and I would pass out stats and help with

27:56

27 minutes, 56 seconds

things cleaning up. Ran the Tiger Telepopier service before you had the internet. That’s how the uh uh the newspapers used to get the stats and the

28:05

28 minutes, 5 seconds

stories that the the writers would write. They would hire my little service, me and my brother, and we would run the Tiger Teleopter Service and and

28:13

28 minutes, 13 seconds

made a pretty good uh little chunk of change as as kids over there. Uh we had an end because our dad uh ran the whole operation. So, yeah.

28:24

28 minutes, 24 seconds

But yeah, so um the one game I missed was in 19 I don’t remember exactly what year it

28:32

28 minutes, 32 seconds

was, but it was my freshman year. I guess it was like 85. LSU decided to play East Carolina after the two-lane

28:40

28 minutes, 40 seconds

game it was scheduled and it was cold, it was wet, it was rainy. LSU was not very good that year and I had finals

28:47

28 minutes, 47 seconds

starting on Monday, you know, on on the Monday following the game and I was like, uh, this is just a bad idea for me to go to the game. I really need to

28:55

28 minutes, 55 seconds

study. If I don’t study, I’m going to fail at a law school and it’s just going to be just terrible. So, I missed that

29:02

29 minutes, 2 seconds

game. Uh, and I think Kent Low Abley uh handled the the PA duties that day. Um,

29:09

29 minutes, 9 seconds

and I thankfully I I or I don’t know some people might say uh maybe I made the wrong decision because I passed uh

29:17

29 minutes, 17 seconds

law school. So I I here I here I am today. How things might have been different. You never know. [laughter]

29:24

29 minutes, 24 seconds

Jimmy, um what what does the Old Miss rivalry u mean to you and and where does this game Saturday like? Where do you

29:33

29 minutes, 33 seconds

where do you think it ranks in the Old Miss rivalry that that you’ve experienced? So, I think just from, you

29:40

29 minutes, 40 seconds

know, old guy like me, the Old Miss rivalry is the number one rivalry. You know, I always think that’s bigger than Alabama. Alabama’s been bigger the last,

29:48

29 minutes, 48 seconds

you know, dozen or so years because of Nick Sabin being there, but just overall the the LSU Alh LSU Miss is is the

29:57

29 minutes, 57 seconds

rivalry, you know, with everybody having bumper stickers and and uh you know, go to Old Miss. Hell, when I was in when I

30:04

30 minutes, 4 seconds

was in high school, my t-shirt that I wore under my, you know, I played football in in high school there, uh the little shirt I wore underneath was go to

30:12

30 minutes, 12 seconds

hell miss because the the the school wouldn’t let me wear it uh actually uh to to class uh the week of the game. So, I cut it and used it as my half shirt.

30:22

30 minutes, 22 seconds

Um but yeah, that’s the biggest game ever. Yeah.

30:26

30 minutes, 26 seconds

Yeah, that’s right. That was uh uh so but yeah, so it was just the biggest game.

30:31

30 minutes, 31 seconds

the uh you know the funniest story goes back you know if you remember back in 1970 so 1969 LSU had you know had won

30:40

30 minutes, 40 seconds

every game except for the one game and that was the miss game with Archie Manning and Miss scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat LSU 26-23

30:49

30 minutes, 49 seconds

in Jackson and it you know it cost LSU you know a real chance to to to be a national champion that year. Um and and

30:57

30 minutes, 57 seconds

for the 10 or 12 years before that, LSU and Miss had beaten each other so many times when the other team had a chance

31:06

31 minutes, 6 seconds

to, you know, really potentially win the national champion, you know, be undefeated. And they kept, you know, kind of beating them and losing and and

31:14

31 minutes, 14 seconds

that kind of went back and forth. 1970 LSU played in in Baton Rouge, and that was the latest I think Todd Pley figured

31:23

31 minutes, 23 seconds

this out the other night. That was the latest starting game um in LSU history.

31:28

31 minutes, 28 seconds

I think it started at 8:40, the same time as the Clemson game a couple of weeks ago, but that was on national TV.

31:35

31 minutes, 35 seconds

And this is back when they didn’t have many games. Number one, there weren’t many games on national TV. And there certainly weren’t many evening games, but that was a night game. And that’s

31:43

31 minutes, 43 seconds

the game that Archie Manning had broken his arm earlier in the season. Uh it was a revenge game. They they allowed him to

31:50

31 minutes, 50 seconds

play wearing a cast and LSU just romped over him. I think it was 61 to7. Uh Kasanova got the safety in the end zone

31:58

31 minutes, 58 seconds

and sort of gently put him down in the end zone, but the place went crazy. There were punt returns for touchdowns.

32:04

32 minutes, 4 seconds

It was just a great environment. And I think that’s one of the places that game and the Notre Dame game where the the

32:11

32 minutes, 11 seconds

the 28-8 Notre Dame game were the two games I think that made the nation sort of sort of look at LSU and Tiger Stadium

32:19

32 minutes, 19 seconds

as being just something different. that that was a fantastic environment that it was just different. A night game in Tiger Stadium was was unique. Um

32:27

32 minutes, 27 seconds

well, Jimmy, since you brought that up and and I know we’re running low on time here, but you know, you you were able

32:35

32 minutes, 35 seconds

obviously to do the Clemson game and there was so much excitement and so much buildup for that that game. How did that game compare excitement wise,

32:44

32 minutes, 44 seconds

electricitywise, and just monumentalwise to those like those two you were just talking about?

32:51

32 minutes, 51 seconds

I I think it’s in the same in the same uh stratosphere. I I just think that everybody right now is so excited about the future. They’re so excited about

33:00

33 minutes

what’s what’s happening and the chances of of not just winning for this season, but I think everybody’s looking at the

33:07

33 minutes, 7 seconds

idea that LSU’s got a chance to to kind of do what we’ve wanted to do for so long, which is to have a real sustained

33:15

33 minutes, 15 seconds

uh winning program for, you know, year in year out for, you know, five, six, 10 years to win championships. And I think

33:24

33 minutes, 24 seconds

we’ve all wanted that. We’ve had times when we’ve won conference championships, national championships, but we haven’t had that sort sort of sustained program,

33:32

33 minutes, 32 seconds

and I think that’s what everybody’s excited about.

33:35

33 minutes, 35 seconds

All right. Well, what’s your uh prediction for this weekend in Oxford?

33:39

33 minutes, 39 seconds

Oh, I think we’re going to win by two scores at least. Wow.

33:42

33 minutes, 42 seconds

I think I think Yeah, I think we’re going to win easy. You know, one one last little quick story if I’ve got time. Uh the the the 17 if you got it

33:50

33 minutes, 50 seconds

the 17 to6 game when LSU beat Miss I think it was in 72. Um my dad my dad is on the field. Yeah. Bones throws a

33:59

33 minutes, 59 seconds

touchdown pass. There’s no time left on the clock. They send uh Jackson, Rusty Jackson out to kick the extra point. The fans are going crazy. Everything is is just insane. He kicks the extra point.

34:11

34 minutes, 11 seconds

There’s no time on the clock. LSU wins 17 to 16. Everybody’s running around. My dad is out there on the field as he always would be with Coach Mack to get

34:19

34 minutes, 19 seconds

him to where he’s supposed to be for interviews here and there. And so my little dad, who’s who’s a foot shorter than than Coach Mack, uh grabs Coach

34:26

34 minutes, 26 seconds

Mack by the shoulders, looks him right in the face, and says, “Mack, if you had any guts, you’d gone for two.”

34:33

34 minutes, 33 seconds

[laughter]

34:37

34 minutes, 37 seconds

Every story I do on that game, I end it with that. [laughter] It’s the most awesome story. So, Mr. And

34:45

34 minutes, 45 seconds

you know, and it’s just my dad, you know, he that’s that’s who he was.

34:49

34 minutes, 49 seconds

Well, Jimmy, one more story really quick. Uh, whenever Bo Ryan’s tragedy occurred, uh, Paul Diesel was the athletic director, and we wrote about

34:57

34 minutes, 57 seconds

this a couple weeks ago, uh, at the occasion of of coach Stoval’s demise.

35:03

35 minutes, 3 seconds

Um, but your your dad uh had a a role in de in Diesel picking Stoval to become

35:10

35 minutes, 10 seconds

the next coach. Can you detail that quickly for us? So my my my understanding and and again I was a kid so I’m I’m not deeply involved and and

35:19

35 minutes, 19 seconds

but my understanding was was that you know at the time there was a there was a lot of um you know a lot of uh going

35:28

35 minutes, 28 seconds

back and forth between the fans. Uh bringing coach Detail back to LSU was controversial. There was a lot of you

35:36

35 minutes, 36 seconds

know issues about was he coming back to coach? Was he going to take over for coach Mack? was he gonna put coach Mack aside and then take over the coaching

35:43

35 minutes, 43 seconds

job? And it was decided that that would be too controversial and cause too much of a split uh in the fan base and and that that was not a good decision. And

35:51

35 minutes, 51 seconds

that was a decision that Coach Diesel made um you know with with talk to to other people around. Um and so they went

35:59

35 minutes, 59 seconds

out and hired this great you know name that was coming up Bo Ryan and he tragically died in that plane crash. Um

36:07

36 minutes, 7 seconds

and and was, you know, coach Dil was like, “We need to make a decision very quickly of what we’re going to do because we’re going to lose these recruits. We’re going to lose the

36:14

36 minutes, 14 seconds

program. We’re we’re not far from the season.” And so they had to make a decision. And and he thought about taking over that position and my dad

36:23

36 minutes, 23 seconds

went to him. I was like, “That’s going to be a mistake. That’s going to cause too much dissension.” Wow.

36:29

36 minutes, 29 seconds

And so ultimately decided to to bring in coach Stoval. There you go. Hey Jimmy, thanks a lot.

36:35

36 minutes, 35 seconds

enjoyed the game Saturday night. We appreciate you spending some time going down some memory lane. That was good stuff.

36:41

36 minutes, 41 seconds

Thanks, guys. I enjoyed talking with you. Y’all are great friends.

36:44

36 minutes, 44 seconds

All right, that is uh Jimmy Manasse, who uh is the voice of the press box. That’s right.

36:50

36 minutes, 50 seconds

His dad, of course, [music] the longtime sports information director at LSU. We got to take a break. Uh then probably take another little break and then when we come back we’re going to talk to uh

36:59

36 minutes, 59 seconds

someone here from the library about what’s going on here as we are broadcasting from the East Baton Rouge Parish main library on Goodwood

37:06

37 minutes, 6 seconds

Boulevard. This is Tiger Rag Radio and we’re back with Tiger Rag Radio.

37:15

37 minutes, 15 seconds

Yeah, we’re back at the East Baton Rouge Parish main library on Goodwood Boulevard. This is Jeff Polmo and

37:22

37 minutes, 22 seconds

joining us is our first library guest of the night. We’ll get back to the LSU Old Miss talk coming up after the top of the

37:29

37 minutes, 29 seconds

hour, but it’s great to have Austin Langley with us. Uh he is uh part of small business services for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System.

37:38

37 minutes, 38 seconds

Austin, thanks a lot for uh joining us tonight. How you doing?

37:41

37 minutes, 41 seconds

I’m doing well. Thank you for having me here.

37:43

37 minutes, 43 seconds

Uh it’s great to have you. Uh so give us an idea of how the East Baton Rouge Parish Library can help out a small business.

37:51

37 minutes, 51 seconds

Well, we have a variety of databases that the library subscribes to that uh business owners can take advantage of.

37:57

37 minutes, 57 seconds

Whether that is people who are just starting out looking to build out that business plan that they may not have yet or someone who’s been in business and is

38:04

38 minutes, 4 seconds

looking for some type of market research. Uh we have databases that we can access and librarians who are trained to use them to help out at all

38:12

38 minutes, 12 seconds

levels of business. So there’s obviously when you’re starting a small business, there are a lot of challenges. There’s a lot of obstacles and there is actually

38:21

38 minutes, 21 seconds

somebody here at the library or actually maybe a team of people that can assist those individuals. Is that is that correct? Yes, that is correct.

38:29

38 minutes, 29 seconds

All right. So, how do you get connected with someone if you are? And what about if you’re already established small business but yet you feel like you might

38:37

38 minutes, 37 seconds

need some assistance and guidance? Well, they can reach out to us uh via email at small businesspl.com.

38:44

38 minutes, 44 seconds

That’s a great way to get in touch with us to kind of get those first steps going. If they stop by here at the main library, Goodwood, Thursdays from 4 to

38:51

38 minutes, 51 seconds

6, we have office hours. Uh this fall, we’re looking at expanding that and having office hours out in more

38:58

38 minutes, 58 seconds

branches. Um and if they just were to uh come and ask to speak with us, we’re usually here and can assist. Are there

39:05

39 minutes, 5 seconds

certain um what are maybe some of the the main questions that a lot of people have? And granted, there’s all kinds of variety of small businesses, so

39:12

39 minutes, 12 seconds

everybody’s in a different uh boat, if you would, but uh what are some of the main challenges that a lot of small business owners face on a daily basis?

39:22

39 minutes, 22 seconds

That is a great question. Um the people that we see, I would say, uh their biggest hurdle is their own lack of

39:29

39 minutes, 29 seconds

confidence. [laughter] So, uh, I could see that what we try and do is get them in touch with the information that will make them feel like they can make an empowered choice for their business’s future.

39:38

39 minutes, 38 seconds

So, you have an event coming up a week from, is it this Saturday or the next Saturday?

39:42

39 minutes, 42 seconds

It’s actually on Wednesday, September 23rd.

39:44

39 minutes, 44 seconds

It’s Wednesday, September 23rd. So, that’s a week from tomorrow night. Tell us about that event.

39:49

39 minutes, 49 seconds

That is going to be um our next installment of our small business engine series. Uh, we have several of them throughout the year. Uh, but you do not

39:57

39 minutes, 57 seconds

have to have attended one before to attend this one. Uh the topic is going to be AI or using AI to understand your

40:05

40 minutes, 5 seconds

balance sheets. So it’s definitely a technical one this time but it’ll be uh really informative and we do open uh the

40:12

40 minutes, 12 seconds

doors at around 8:30 in the morning for networking time.

40:16

40 minutes, 16 seconds

Okay. So that is uh here at the Goodwood Library. That is correct.

40:20

40 minutes, 20 seconds

Okay. All right. So probably in this building right or room right next to us here. Oh. Oh, back over there. Okay.

40:25

40 minutes, 25 seconds

[laughter] Back over there. Uh, as we are in the uh, if you would, I guess the lobby if you would, if this is what they call it here, right in right outside the front doors of the uh, Goodwood Library.

40:35

40 minutes, 35 seconds

How many I I guess how many uh, clients, for the lack of a better term, do you have uh, as far as how many small businesses you’re assisting?

40:44

40 minutes, 44 seconds

You know, um, at those events, we usually see between 50 and 100 business owners come in. Uh, individually we’ve

40:52

40 minutes, 52 seconds

met well over 300 in the few years that I’ve been here doing this.

40:57

40 minutes, 57 seconds

Yeah. And I would imagine you meet with them on a regular basis. It’s just not like they come in, they ask a bunch of questions, you give them a bunch of answers, and then that’s the end of it.

41:06

41 minutes, 6 seconds

You you probably are in constant contact with them.

41:09

41 minutes, 9 seconds

We do try and keep contact going. Uh, we love to hear success stories. We love to hear how people are doing um as they use our resources and and let us know, you know, we really feed on that feedback.

41:19

41 minutes, 19 seconds

Okay. All right. Well, Austin, again, tell uh for anybody that’s listening, uh they have a small business or they know somebody that’s a small business owner and maybe they’re going through some

41:27

41 minutes, 27 seconds

challenges and they need some assistance, they need some guidance, tell them again how the East Baton Rouge Parish Library can help them out.

41:33

41 minutes, 33 seconds

So, no matter where you’re at, you can come in to the main library at Goodwood or you can email small business at ebrpl.com to get in touch with our small

41:41

41 minutes, 41 seconds

business team. We will do a sit-down consultation with you and discuss where you’re at and where you want to be and we will see if we can match you either

41:49

41 minutes, 49 seconds

with some library resources and if we don’t have anything for you, we’ll find something in the community to connect you with.

41:54

41 minutes, 54 seconds

Great. Good stuff. Uh this is what I love about coming out here to the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. I always find out about all these different

42:01

42 minutes, 1 second

services that the library has to assist people to be successful in life. We appreciate your time, Austin. Thank you very much. Thank you. All right, that’s Austin Langley again.

42:10

42 minutes, 10 seconds

He’s uh the director of small business services here at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. We’ll take our top of the hour break. When we come back, Derry Beckwith, former LSU Tiger, will join us on Tiger Rag Radio.

43 minutes, 18 seconds

This is Tiger [music] Rag Radio and good evening everyone. Welcome to hour number two of Tiger Rag Radio. We

43 minutes, 26 seconds

are broadcasting tonight from the East Baton Rouge Parish main library on Goodwood Boulevard. Coming up a little bit later on, Sam Hutchkins from the

43:34

43 minutes, 34 seconds

Clarion Ledger to give us the scouted report on the Old Miss Rebels. But first, we turn to one of our favorite guests that we get from time to time

43:42

43 minutes, 42 seconds

here on Tiger Rag Radio. That is former LSU Tiger, 2007 National Champion Derry Beckwith joins us here on Tiger Rag Radio. Derry, how you doing tonight?

43:54

43 minutes, 54 seconds

Good evening.

43:55

43 minutes, 55 seconds

Hey man, how good to hear from you. I hope uh I hope the little one’s doing okay. Hey, do you have another one on the way yet?

44:02

44 minutes, 2 seconds

Oh my god. Please don’t tell my wife that she will. You You think LSD can tackle? Well, Jeff, she’ll come right now in the library. I [laughter] promise

44:10

44 minutes, 10 seconds

you. So, I’m gonna make sure my phone is not on speaker. I got you, man. I got you. Let’s talk about [laughter] Derry.

44:18

44 minutes, 18 seconds

Derry, this is Todd. Let’s talk about tackling. Well, I mean, obviously it’s the number one ranked defense in the country right now, but uh I I think you

44:26

44 minutes, 26 seconds

can make a case that neither one of those two offenses they’ve played have been that good. But that’s going to change this weekend as they face uh they

44:35

44 minutes, 35 seconds

face two Heisman Trophy candidates, arguably the best quarterback in college football right now and are arguably the best running back in college football

44:43

44 minutes, 43 seconds

right now and Trinidad Chamblas and and Kiwan Lacy. And I guess I want to ask you is it if you strip away the rankings

44:50

44 minutes, 50 seconds

and you strip away all the emotion surrounding Lane Keven’s return to Oxford when you examine this matchup as the

44:59

44 minutes, 59 seconds

national championship linebacker that you are? Uh what is the first thing that concerns you about the Old Miss offense?

45:07

45 minutes, 7 seconds

Trinidad Chamblas. You you alluded to it. The guy is incredible. And I think about Trinidad is this. He can hurt you

45:15

45 minutes, 15 seconds

when he scrambles. He is the most effective when he breaks the pocket because he constantly keeps his eyes downfield and he’s extremely accurate.

45:23

45 minutes, 23 seconds

So if I’m LSU shooting on Blake Baker coming to this game, obviously you have to put pressure on Trinad Chambers. You cannot let him to sit back in pocket and

45:31

45 minutes, 31 seconds

just pick you apart. But once you get pressure, you have to make sure that if your first guy doesn’t hit home, you have a second guy on that second level

45:39

45 minutes, 39 seconds

that’s sponsoring that. So, I’m not a decent coordinator, but I’m thinking let’s say they run a stunt with the D lineman or they bring the the star off

45:47

45 minutes, 47 seconds

the edge and say they don’t hit home, they don’t sack Trinidad Chambers and he breaks contain, you have to have we have to have Whitw Weeks or TJ Dy spying

45:54

45 minutes, 54 seconds

Trinidad Chambers to make sure that they close that gap because if they don’t, that’s where he’s going to hurt you. So, I think Trinidad Chandler is going to

46:01

46 minutes, 1 second

win or lose this game for Old Miss. And I’m sure that Blake Baker’s defense is going to be well equipped for him.

46:09

46 minutes, 9 seconds

The Does Kiwan Lacy’s ability to run up the gut? I know you talked about Whit Weeks and Doy, TJ Doy, and and they’ve

46:18

46 minutes, 18 seconds

been exceptionally strong, but you know, that’s Old Miss’s strength, too, is is Lacy up the middle. And my concern is

46:25

46 minutes, 25 seconds

that LSU is going to uh, you know, have the one of the safeties, especially probably Culie stepping up, and that

46:32

46 minutes, 32 seconds

that that’ll take a little uh little out of LSU’s coverage ability if they do that. Does that worry you a little bit?

46:40

46 minutes, 40 seconds

I’m kind of the opposite this year when it when it comes to Q Lacy. I’m not as worried about him. And now you guys got to remember last year he had Charlie

46:47

46 minutes, 47 seconds

Weiss and Lane Keifin calling off the plays. And one thing Kean and Weiss do a phenomenal job at, they’re very creative in the run game. Meaning even if your

46:56

46 minutes, 56 seconds

own linemen are not that good, they do a lot of misdirection to get the linebacker’s eyes in different directions. So, a lot of counters, a lot

47:03

47 minutes, 3 seconds

of different motions to make sure that you create those uh running gaps for the running back and make them a little bit wider for him to hit the hole. I did

47:12

47 minutes, 12 seconds

watch the first game against Louisville and he did make some tough good runs, but I just don’t see the creativity in the run game that Old Miss had last

47:20

47 minutes, 20 seconds

year. Now, listen guys, I could be completely wrong. This is a game with a lot of riding on it. So, look, Kiwan may come out this game and play extremely

47:28

47 minutes, 28 seconds

well. I just don’t think Kiwan’s gonna hurt you this year as he as he did last year with other teams. My main focus is

47:35

47 minutes, 35 seconds

stopping Trinidad Chambers. I rather Tiwan Lacy beat me then Trinidad Chambers uh beat me this football game

47:42

47 minutes, 42 seconds

and I just cannot see um this defense the maturity that they have on all levels lineman linebackers and safety letting Kiwan Lacy run the football down

47:50

47 minutes, 50 seconds

their throat because running the football is a pride thing and I think this defense takes pride in stopping the run.

47:57

47 minutes, 57 seconds

So, so you’re sold on LSU’s defense right now, even though the uh the the two opponents weren’t weren’t that good in retrospect offensively.

48:06

48 minutes, 6 seconds

Yes, I’m Yes, I’m sold. I And I I look at things beyond schemes and what they’re doing. I look at these guys body

48:14

48 minutes, 14 seconds

language. I watched them against Clemson when they up by a lot of points, nobody was celebrating. The guys that were on the sideline, they were in tune even when they went in the game. even against

48:22

48 minutes, 22 seconds

Louisiana Tech. Like that was a game they could have basically let down and they didn’t. They treated Louisiana Tech like it was a Old Miss. And so I think

48:30

48 minutes, 30 seconds

on every level they have a guy that can get after the pass on D lineman. They have two linebackers who can run like beers. And then you have a second

48:38

48 minutes, 38 seconds

secondary who’s elite. You have a quarterback that’s 6’4 65 who not only can play press man but also going to play in zone. And when it comes to DJ

48:46

48 minutes, 46 seconds

Picket with a corner that big guys to 6’4, 6’5, it’s hard for him to for a corner that size that length to play manto man. They usually I zone our I

48:55

48 minutes, 55 seconds

zone corners. I usually zone corners and typically you don’t see that with with with DJ Picket. He can play man and play zone and obviously have and those

49:03

49 minutes, 3 seconds

guys uh in the back end. So I I think this defense is amazing. Um last year they held Miss only 24 points. uh the

49:11

49 minutes, 11 seconds

lowest uh scoring um that miss had all year. So, I believe in this defense and I think they’re gonna come out and with the hair on fire and hopefully put the clamps to this offense.

49:22

49 minutes, 22 seconds

You know, Derry, you made a you made a good point about Old Miss’s running game not being quite as creative so far this season and they they haven’t really put

49:29

49 minutes, 29 seconds

up great numbers just two games. But Miss’s new offensive coordinator, John David Baker, he’s the only new

49:37

49 minutes, 37 seconds

coordinator in this game. You know, everybody else is back. Charlie Weiss and Lane are at LSU. Pete Golding still

49:44

49 minutes, 44 seconds

calling the defense at Old Miss and Blake Baker is still the defensive coordinator at LSU. So, he uh he might

49:52

49 minutes, 52 seconds

be at a disadvantage, but what I wanted to ask you, Derry, is what what do you see LSU’s defense doing better and differently so far this season?

50:03

50 minutes, 3 seconds

I think the main thing is that they can run. And I know that’s cliche and the first series when they played Clemson

50:12

50 minutes, 12 seconds

and when they ran a jet sweep to the running back and I saw quickly not only that TJ D got to the edge got to the edge but I saw saw quickly how the

50:20

50 minutes, 20 seconds

sinkies came down. These guys can flat out run and that in today’s game if you can’t run defensively if you don’t have

50:27

50 minutes, 27 seconds

speed on defense you’re going to be in trouble because of the RPO offenses and because they spread you out so much.

50:33

50 minutes, 33 seconds

These guys can run. That’s the first and foremost. And the second thing, nobody tries to make a play if they’re not supposed to make a play. I look at a guy

50:41

50 minutes, 41 seconds

like Dylan Carbicker. Uh I know I’m going back to the Clemson game. When he’s supposed to when he’s supposed to set the edge, he sets the edge. He

50:48

50 minutes, 48 seconds

doesn’t uh peek his head inside and let the running back or quarterback bounce outside, he sets the edge. Everybody’s doing their job. They feed off each

50:56

50 minutes, 56 seconds

other. Uh they want each other to be successful. And again, I think it’s just the maturity level. You got a lot of guys in the transfer port who’s older, who has a lot of game experience. They

51:04

51 minutes, 4 seconds

know what’s at stake. I know they talked about they do a whole character testment and got these guys in the portal. I’m I’m just impressed. Uh and then obviously Baker, he does a lot of things

51:13

51 minutes, 13 seconds

uh creative-wise defensively to get these guys in the right position to be successful. And I’m just look, I’m sold after two games. I hope they make make me uh not unsold coming this Saturday.

51:26

51 minutes, 26 seconds

But listen guys, I think they’re going to play uh outstanding in this game uh this coming Saturday.

51:32

51 minutes, 32 seconds

So Darren, when you talk about Chamblas’s ability to uh avoid pressures and scramble,

51:41

51 minutes, 41 seconds

you know, I think a lot of people hear, well, LSU’s got to put a lot of pressure on him. LSU is going to have to sack him a lot. But you you don’t really have to

51:48

51 minutes, 48 seconds

sack a quarterback a lot to affect effectively pressure him.

51:52

51 minutes, 52 seconds

That’s what saving all said. and and put put you know you know change his construct mentally of what he’s deci you

52:00

52 minutes

know his decision- making or what have you. So so how important is it that LSU exhibits that discipline you just

52:08

52 minutes, 8 seconds

described in this game and how much different is it going to be for them to have to do that against a better opponent in a in an opposing SEC atmosphere.

52:18

52 minutes, 18 seconds

So anytime you have a quarterback like Chandas who who can break the pocket and and scramble around and defensively we we call that you have to have lane

52:26

52 minutes, 26 seconds

integrity. So whe whether you’re blitzing in the A gap, B gap or coming off the edge, you have to have lane integrity and you have to have great angles. And so if you’re blitzing off

52:34

52 minutes, 34 seconds

the edge, you got to make sure that you on the uphill shoulder to keep him from spinning out. So if you if they have great lane integrity and like you said, you don’t have to sack them, but you

52:43

52 minutes, 43 seconds

have to get in those passing lanes. And when he does release that ball, you need to be there to hit him. I think he has to feel the contact every time he

52:50

52 minutes, 50 seconds

releases the football. And I think if he does that, he’s going to second guess roll out the pocket. He’s going to second guess. Maybe he’s going to start instead of seeing 11 guys on defense,

52:59

52 minutes, 59 seconds

he’s going to start seeing 13 guys on defense. And that’s what you always want. You want to make sure that he sees more guys on defense than you actually have on the football field. And so, you

53:08

53 minutes, 8 seconds

have to hit him early and often. You cannot let a quarter quarterback like that get in a rhythm because if he does, uh, you’re going to be in for a long day. We’re still on the air here uh from

53:16

53 minutes, 16 seconds

the studio, but it looks like our uh our broadcast from the EBR uh public library at the main library on Goodwood Boulevard has lost power for now. So, it

53:25

53 minutes, 25 seconds

looks like it’s just us going. Um but we can keep talking ball here. What is it that you think um you know, you

53:33

53 minutes, 33 seconds

mentioned or just talking about Blake Baker, what they’re doing differently this year. Um, I think for me whenever I look at it, the success of the blitzes

53:40

53 minutes, 40 seconds

that are coming home, what are you seeing from a a creativity aspect from Blake Baker’s play calling and are those

53:48

53 minutes, 48 seconds

blitzes is is he taking risks there that could get LSU into trouble against a better opponent?

53:54

53 minutes, 54 seconds

He’s he’s not taking risk. I think last year he took more risk because he had to. I think this year he’s getting back

54:01

54 minutes, 1 second

to to to me he’s getting back to the basic when it comes to blitzes. For instance, if you go back to that Clemson game, the interception that that Jordan

54:09

54 minutes, 9 seconds

Ross had. So, he basically ran a gut cross with both inside linebackers with Weeks and TJ Doy, which is which is normal. I mean, people been running that

54:17

54 minutes, 17 seconds

for ages. But one thing he did add was the backside linebacker dropping in coverage where the quarterback couldn’t see him. That’s the creativity that that I’m talking about. He’s keeping it

54:25

54 minutes, 25 seconds

simple, but he’s adding a flare to those simple blitzes, and it’s being effective for him.

54:30

54 minutes, 30 seconds

Okay, Case. So, I’m sorry. Uh, we’re at the library. We’re having a a power outage that just affected the whole

54:38

54 minutes, 38 seconds

library unfortunately. I understand that uh Dair was just disconnected as well. So things aren’t going too well for us.

54:45

54 minutes, 45 seconds

Hopefully this isn’t like the first half of LSU against Louisiana Tech, but it certainly feels like it right now. Um but

54:54

54 minutes, 54 seconds

uh so what I would like to do right this second is uh we have some uh uh clips of Kein at his press conference. Lane

55:02

55 minutes, 2 seconds

Keifin at his press conference on Monday. Um I know we have a sequence of those. I want to start if we can case

55:09

55 minutes, 9 seconds

with uh Lane talking about who the pressure is on in reality state man like you don’t have anything to worry about

55:17

55 minutes, 17 seconds

as far as like attention on you all week and everything. there’s just going to be so much attention, hatred, everything on me. I said, “You just get to go play.”

55:26

55 minutes, 26 seconds

And I said, “Really? The pressure is on them. They’re the team that, you know, we won seven games last year. They won 13. They returned two Heisman

55:35

55 minutes, 35 seconds

candidates.” Do Do you buy that, Derry? Do you buy what Keipin is saying about the pressures really on Old Miss?

55:41

55 minutes, 41 seconds

Looks like we might have lost them again.

55:43

55 minutes, 43 seconds

Oh, we’re having a We’re have So, this is like our third turnover, right?

55:48

55 minutes, 48 seconds

It seem Seems like it. We’re having a a Levit first half right now, but maybe we can bounce back like he [laughter] did.

55:55

55 minutes, 55 seconds

Okay. What So, what’s next on the on the clips from Kevin? I I don’t necessarily believe that all the pressure is on only

56:03

56 minutes, 3 seconds

Miss. I think there’s some pressure on especially LSU’s offense uh to to play well because they can’t afford any

56:09

56 minutes, 9 seconds

turnovers against Miss in my mind, much less three or four. But I do hear understand what Keifin is saying about

56:18

56 minutes, 18 seconds

most of the pressure and most of the uh emotion being with the Old Miss side because you think about it, most of the LSU players aren’t really as invested.

56:29

56 minutes, 29 seconds

Of course, there’s Dy and and Prince and and of course, uh Winston Davis and you

56:36

56 minutes, 36 seconds

know, a you know, a couple of players that are familiar with the situation between Miss and LSU firsthand, but most

56:43

56 minutes, 43 seconds

of them are on the miss side. So, I get it. They have more pressure on them and than LSU does. Uh what’s next with Keifin from the press conference?

56:53

56 minutes, 53 seconds

He had one that I I enjoyed just because I thought it was kind of funny. um talking about how you know a lot has been made about the coaching change and

57:01

57 minutes, 1 second

the two coaching staffs and their familiarity and that is important but at the end of the day it is about the players and this is what he had to say.

57:07

57 minutes, 7 seconds

I know obviously a lot’s going to be made about me but this is about the players being prepared really well and playing really well. Pete’s not going to tackle anybody. I’m not going to throw

57:16

57 minutes, 16 seconds

any touchdowns. Um I used to say say the same thing when we play coach Sabin and then he joke that he wouldn’t do very

57:22

57 minutes, 22 seconds

well in coverage at his age. Yeah, I I I tend to agree with that. The other one that I really wanted to play case, if we

57:32

57 minutes, 32 seconds

could is Lane talking about what caused LSU’s offensive problems predominantly in the first half.

57:42

57 minutes, 42 seconds

Yeah. So, I don’t think we have that one on tap, but I do know what you’re talking about where he mentioned that it was a team issue, right? That’s what you’re referring to.

57:50

57 minutes, 50 seconds

Yes, exactly.

57:51

57 minutes, 51 seconds

Yeah. He said that, you know, those turnovers, the the levit interceptions like that, that’s usually caused by someone uh and I’m, you know, paraphrasing here, that that’s caused by

57:59

57 minutes, 59 seconds

someone else not doing their job a lot of the time or a mishap somewhere else.

58:02

58 minutes, 2 seconds

Whether it’s a blocking assignment, Levid mentioned after the game that that errant throw over the head of TDZ Green, I think it was his first interception,

58:11

58 minutes, 11 seconds

that was because he felt the pressure coming off the right edge. And you know, I don’t know if that’s misb block or not there, but uh mistakes across whether

58:19

58 minutes, 19 seconds

it’s the line, the wide receivers, the tight ends, those can cause some of those turnovers. And maybe it wasn’t all Levit’s fault, although some of those throws did look a little off as well.

58:28

58 minutes, 28 seconds

Well, I do know on the 100 yard interception return, our first thought was from the press box that Levit had had thrown an errant pass behind the

58:37

58 minutes, 37 seconds

receiver. Now, it turns out uh the receiver, Jackson Harris, uh had run too shallow of a route to begin with, and

58:46

58 minutes, 46 seconds

that’s what caused uh caused that interception predominantly. But I understand we need to take a break right now.

58:53

58 minutes, 53 seconds

Yeah, let’s get to a break. See if we can uh figure out some of these techn technological issues that we’ve been having here. And uh we’ll be back with more on Tiger Radio right after this.

Now, more Tiger Rag Radio.

59:38

59 minutes, 38 seconds

Welcome back to Tiger Rag Radio. I’m producer Case Kishnik here with Tiger Rag executive editor Todd Horn. Todd, we’ve been going through some some

59:45

59 minutes, 45 seconds

issues here as the power at the main library where we were broadcasting from has lost power, but we’re pulling it together and uh doing the best we can

59:53

59 minutes, 53 seconds

just like LSU did against Louisiana Tech last weekend. And I’d say recovering well. Um he’s got going into this

1:00:01

1 hour, 1 second

we just need to score 35 points in the second half right and you know what I think our ace in the hole our trade green might just be Pete Golding here. Um Pete is always

1:00:09

1 hour, 9 seconds

a pleasure to listen to I think so and he spoke a lot of course about the upcoming matchup with LSU top 10 opponent game day coming to Oxford just

1:00:18

1 hour, 18 seconds

for just the third time ever one of if not the biggest game in the miss program history uh arguably uh just from a a

1:00:25

1 hour, 25 seconds

hype and an energy perspective. Um, but he had a message for the fans before that big game. There’s going to be a lot of emotions, a lot of hatred towards

1:00:32

1 hour, 32 seconds

Lane Keifin coming into the game. But he says that Oxford has a reputation as a a place with good people and a good community that’s hospitable and he doesn’t want to ruin all that over a football game.

1:00:42

1 hour, 42 seconds

There’s a competitive part of everybody, right? That that obviously we want to create a really really good environment like they always have for a top 10 matchup for it to be really hard to play

1:00:51

1 hour, 51 seconds

offense in that stadium uh and be there early and be loud. But but I think at the end of it, there’s still a respect piece and this place has always been known to have really really good people.

1:01:02

1 hour, 1 minute, 2 seconds

Well, I’m not sure if I’m sold on that yet, but we’ll see. There’s a lot of emotion and and I think that’s more of an appeal to the to the miss fan base than it is a prediction, but we’ll see.

1:01:14

1 hour, 1 minute, 14 seconds

Yeah. And it’s it’s something that, you know, we mentioned kind of earlier that these these returns can be emotional and not many of them happen in the year

1:01:21

1 hour, 1 minute, 21 seconds

after Lane Keifin was at Miss less than a year ago and that that departure was really messy. We know when he went back to Tennessee as the coach of Miss,

1:01:30

1 hour, 1 minute, 30 seconds

another messy departure that he had. Uh he was greeted with golf balls and and mustard bottles from from the the

1:01:37

1 hour, 1 minute, 37 seconds

stands. Obviously, we hope that doesn’t happen in Oxford this weekend, but there’s there’s no telling what could go on in uh in Vault Hemingway. Huh.

1:01:45

1 hour, 1 minute, 45 seconds

That’s that’s true. I do know they have beefed up security. Uh and LSU’s also got beefed up security and I think Glenn

1:01:52

1 hour, 1 minute, 52 seconds

said they’re expecting more plain closed uh officers to be in around. So if you’re at the game, be careful.

1:02:00

1 hour, 2 minutes

Yeah. And uh we’ve also talked a lot about during the show um kind of the back and forth, the familiarity between these two coaching staffs. Lane Keifin

1:02:07

1 hour, 2 minutes, 7 seconds

brought over 10 assistant coaches with him from Oxford when he came to LSU. uh they they know a lot about each other and that’s good thing for both sides but

1:02:16

1 hour, 2 minutes, 16 seconds

Golding said it can also cause a new issue and we’ve just got a couple seconds here before the break.

1:02:20

1 hour, 2 minutes, 20 seconds

I think sometimes you can make it a lot harder than it should be when you know somebody really well but we know it’s going to be really challenging. Charlie does a really good job. Obviously Lane,

1:02:28

1 hour, 2 minutes, 28 seconds

you know, does a really good job on game day as well. So, uh got a good quarterback. So, uh I think it’s good that there’s familiarity, but also

1:02:35

1 hour, 2 minutes, 35 seconds

sometimes for coaches we overthink it a little bit.

1:02:38

1 hour, 2 minutes, 38 seconds

We’ll we’ll see if they overthink it when it comes to Saturday. uh he you know he says that sometimes you just got to worry about their bread and butter and and not get up in your head and and

1:02:45

1 hour, 2 minutes, 45 seconds

we’ll see what happens when the play calling comes when LSU does go ahead and visit Oxford. Uh we’ll take a break. We’ll be back. Very exciting.

1:02:52

1 hour, 2 minutes, 52 seconds

We’ll take a break be back with more on Tiger Radio with Sam Hutchkins of the Clearing Ledger right after this.

Tiger Rag Radio is back on the air.

1:03:37

1 hour, 3 minutes, 37 seconds

Hello and welcome back to Tiger Egg Radio. This is uh Glenn Gilbo back in the studio here. They had some uh power outage at the library, but I was able to

1:03:45

1 hour, 3 minutes, 45 seconds

dash over here and break a few uh speeding traffic laws, but uh we’re good. And we’re we’re joined by Sam Hutchkins of the Jackson Clarion Ledger.

1:03:54

1 hour, 3 minutes, 54 seconds

Sam, you there? Yeah, I’m here. Glenn, how are you? All right, dude. Thanks.

1:03:58

1 hour, 3 minutes, 58 seconds

Sounds like not too well. That sounds like quite the situation. [laughter] Yeah, hopefully they don’t have a power out at Vaude Hemingway uh Saturday. I I

1:04:06

1 hour, 4 minutes, 6 seconds

covered a Super Bowl in New Orleans where they had a power outage uh between uh uh the Ravens and the 49ers, man. Unbelievable.

1:04:13

1 hour, 4 minutes, 13 seconds

That’s right.

1:04:15

1 hour, 4 minutes, 15 seconds

But uh well, Sam, what is what is Oxford like right now, man? Can can you tell there’s a big game coming up Saturday just by walking around town or is it kind of normal?

1:04:26

1 hour, 4 minutes, 26 seconds

Yeah, you really can. And and the tricky thing with this game, it’s almost it’s not a big game in the sense that like,

1:04:33

1 hour, 4 minutes, 33 seconds

you know, uh the college football playoff game against two lane here could be a big game. You know, last year, all those are big games, but the excitement

1:04:41

1 hour, 4 minutes, 41 seconds

for this one has been building for 10 months. You know, usually a big game, you kind of start to realize, oh, if if our team starts winning and if they

1:04:49

1 hour, 4 minutes, 49 seconds

start, you know, keep winning like in four weeks, that could be a huge game.

1:04:53

1 hour, 4 minutes, 53 seconds

and you get like a month max to to really uh drink it in and and build the excitement. But this has been building

1:05:01

1 hour, 5 minutes, 1 second

since like literally, you know, the the second he foot set on or set foot on that tarmac and left Oxford. Everyone knew, well, we know when he’s coming

1:05:09

1 hour, 5 minutes, 9 seconds

back. So, yeah, the the town’s ready for this one.

1:05:12

1 hour, 5 minutes, 12 seconds

Yeah. And and you know, the LSU Miss game tends to be later in the season and they’ve had some games over the years that kind of decided the SEC West. This

1:05:21

1 hour, 5 minutes, 21 seconds

one really doesn’t decide anything, but that doesn’t matter. I mean, you know, both teams could be in the playoffs, but it’s it’s such a big uh early season game, and I guess kind of sets the pace.

1:05:33

1 hour, 5 minutes, 33 seconds

Um, but uh what uh what do you get the feeling from talking to the players and and Coach Golding? What what’s uh what’s that like?

1:05:43

1 hour, 5 minutes, 43 seconds

I think you can kind of tell what the SIDs were saying like right before the players kind of hit the microphone

1:05:51

1 hour, 5 minutes, 51 seconds

because, you know, and the SIDs are doing their job by relaying the talking points from the coaching staff and all that and that the message from the

1:06:00

1 hour, 6 minutes

building is, you know, hey, we kind of understand that this game means a lot here, but you have to treat it just like any other game to win. And so business

1:06:08

1 hour, 6 minutes, 8 seconds

as usual is kind of the the message from the coaching staff and and what we’ve heard from the players here today at

1:06:15

1 hour, 6 minutes, 15 seconds

press conferences. Whether anyone believed that, you know, I I sort of have trouble believing that from from anyone on either side of this rivalry

1:06:24

1 hour, 6 minutes, 24 seconds

does the press conference today. You know, that’s just how it is.

1:06:27

1 hour, 6 minutes, 27 seconds

What are what are you hearing from miss people, if you’ve gotten to do this story yet, on on increased security? Are there are there going to be more visible police or or what are they telling you?

1:06:38

1 hour, 6 minutes, 38 seconds

Yeah. Yeah. I’ve got something coming out on that tomorrow and that’s been all over the the the web today and all that.

1:06:44

1 hour, 6 minutes, 44 seconds

You know, I I talked with the athletic director, Keith Carter, recently and he told me, hey, he feels like a lot of this is kind of getting overblown

1:06:52

1 hour, 6 minutes, 52 seconds

because it’s such a a hot button issue and that kind of the the bigger thing than any one coach you have to worry

1:06:59

1 hour, 6 minutes, 59 seconds

about is just crowd support for, you know, getting two or 300,000 people into Oxford for the weekend. So that’s kind

1:07:07

1 hour, 7 minutes, 7 seconds

of the the reason at least according to Old Miss is why you would bring in so many extra police officers or security guards and all that is to kind of help

1:07:15

1 hour, 7 minutes, 15 seconds

with that aspect. And the actual game day operation is pretty uh you know pretty tied down at this point um in

1:07:23

1 hour, 7 minutes, 23 seconds

terms of getting Kevin and LSU off the bus and into the stadium and all that.

1:07:27

1 hour, 7 minutes, 27 seconds

So you know I I uh hope everything goes well. We’ll see. Again, the the tricky thing that I think has anyone in a leadership position nervous is one

1:07:36

1 hour, 7 minutes, 36 seconds

unruly fan can make 70,000 others um look bad, you know, from from one incident. So, we’ll see how it plays out.

1:07:44

1 hour, 7 minutes, 44 seconds

Sam, there’s been a lot made, of course, of all the off the- field stuff that’s going on, but at the end of the day, all that really matters is what happens on the field and what what comes down

1:07:52

1 hour, 7 minutes, 52 seconds

Saturday night in Vaude Hemingway. Lane Keifin kind of caused a stir yesterday by saying the pressure is actually on

1:08:00

1 hour, 8 minutes

miss. They’re the team that went to the playoffs last year. They’re the teams that have two the two Heisman candidates in the backfield. Do you agree with that statement?

1:08:11

1 hour, 8 minutes, 11 seconds

No. If I had to pick a team with more pressure, then I’ I’d think it’s pretty obvious that that it’s Kein and LSU. Um,

1:08:18

1 hour, 8 minutes, 18 seconds

you know, now now that’s not to deny I guess Kip is trying to make the argument that they’re certainly on pressure on Old Miss, too, in terms of how much this

1:08:26

1 hour, 8 minutes, 26 seconds

game means to the fan base. And you can throw it out aside like if if you know there’s just two strangers off the street coaching. Obviously, this game

1:08:33

1 hour, 8 minutes, 33 seconds

would mean a lot in terms of SEC implications and national rankings and all that. Um, but if you had to break it down to who has more pressure, I mean, I

1:08:41

1 hour, 8 minutes, 41 seconds

I was going to run that by you guys because I I I don’t think that that’s the accurate impression at all from Lane. I mean, Lane is the guy who if you

1:08:49

1 hour, 8 minutes, 49 seconds

if you lose this game, then everyone’s going to be grilling you nationally with all these columns about did you leave

1:08:57

1 hour, 8 minutes, 57 seconds

the better opportunity for the worst opportunity. Did you become the villain for nothing? So, I think this is Lane’s chance to say, hey, I threw away what I

1:09:05

1 hour, 9 minutes, 5 seconds

had in Oxford. Um, but this is his chance to say, I threw it away for a better opportunity, and this is his chance to prove it. So, I think all the pressure is on Lane.

1:09:14

1 hour, 9 minutes, 14 seconds

Who who does Miss have next week? at [clears throat] Florida is the game. So, not easy.

1:09:20

1 hour, 9 minutes, 20 seconds

Yeah. Okay. Well, well, uh there is pressure on Lane to win this week because he’s got&M at home next week.

1:09:27

1 hour, 9 minutes, 27 seconds

But I I tend to think um when when it’s a really big game and the two teams are kind of evenly matched and this is

1:09:35

1 hour, 9 minutes, 35 seconds

number seven verse number eight, sometimes the home team is under more pressure because everybody’s kind of going nuts and they can’t get too caught

1:09:44

1 hour, 9 minutes, 44 seconds

up in it. Uh, and the the road team doesn’t feel that way all the all the time, but you know, we’re kind of we’re kind of splitting hairs. But I think um

1:09:52

1 hour, 9 minutes, 52 seconds

I I think Lane I think they’re both under pressure a lot because to me Pete Golding’s under a lot of pressure because he’s a firstear

1:10:02

1 hour, 10 minutes, 2 seconds

head coach and and you know in another situation he never gets the job. You know if if they don’t have the playoff

1:10:09

1 hour, 10 minutes, 9 seconds

situation last year and they have time to look for a coach he probably doesn’t get the job. So, I think he feels like he’s got a lot to prove, but he, you

1:10:17

1 hour, 10 minutes, 17 seconds

know, he he you can say he proved a lot in the uh in the playoffs last year. And then also, I think LSU’s roster may be

1:10:26

1 hour, 10 minutes, 26 seconds

better than Old Miss’s, but Old Miss’s is more seasoned and they were just in the playoffs. So, I think that’s kind of what Lane was getting at that they might

1:10:34

1 hour, 10 minutes, 34 seconds

be under more pressure. But, I don’t know. I might I think it’s kind of a draw as far as the pressure thing. Yeah. And I like that breakdown, Glenn.

1:10:42

1 hour, 10 minutes, 42 seconds

Someone asked me that the other day like if if if you told me that this game is decided by three points then I would

1:10:50

1 hour, 10 minutes, 50 seconds

tend to think that Miss wins because I have a lot of belief in what Trinidad Chamblas can do. I think you have one of the best field goal kickers in the

1:10:57

1 hour, 10 minutes, 57 seconds

country and Lucas Cariierro and you’re at home. There’s a lot going for you, you know, in a close game fourth quarter type deal late that you like Old Miss.

1:11:06

1 hour, 11 minutes, 6 seconds

But if you were to tell me, hey, like this is going to be a 28-point game and one side is going to come out and look clearly better, LSU has looked uh, you

1:11:15

1 hour, 11 minutes, 15 seconds

know, through two weeks more explosive to me. And I mean, I I’ve seen Lane so many times with my own eyes run up the

1:11:22

1 hour, 11 minutes, 22 seconds

score on good teams. Um, so, you know, that’s the that’s the component there. I mean, I know Lane will try to come in

1:11:30

1 hour, 11 minutes, 30 seconds

here and score 70. I I don’t ever imagine a scenario where he takes Sam Levit out, you know, for any reason.

1:11:36

1 hour, 11 minutes, 36 seconds

Sam, Jeff Polarmmo here. Uh have what has Old Miss done to try to address some of the issues we saw in the second half

1:11:44

1 hour, 11 minutes, 44 seconds

in this defensive secondary where Louisville was able to really really carve them up.

1:11:51

1 hour, 11 minutes, 51 seconds

Yeah. So Golding kind of mentioned that he thought that the majority of the issues from that week were communication

1:12:00

1 hour, 12 minutes

issues, right? Which he argued you’d rather have a communication issue than like a lack of talent issue because a communication issue is fixable. So part

1:12:09

1 hour, 12 minutes, 9 seconds

of that um you know we saw less coverage problems against Charlotte, but you know part of that could be too you’re making up for that with just having better

1:12:18

1 hour, 12 minutes, 18 seconds

athletes. Uh, but they’re supposed to get Sheree Denon back, who’s a defensive back, a transfer from Florida, who had all the buzz in the preseason. So, I

1:12:26

1 hour, 12 minutes, 26 seconds

think getting him back could help with that kind of play in the secondary and and getting all those pieces to click.

1:12:33

1 hour, 12 minutes, 33 seconds

But, I mean, ultimately, Peter said like, hey, look, this is not a world where everyone gets a my bad. And, you know, he said that in the offseason and

1:12:42

1 hour, 12 minutes, 42 seconds

the first week there’s a lot of safeties and corners tapping themselves on the chest and kind of saying my bad. So that has been priority number one is to fix all that.

1:12:51

1 hour, 12 minutes, 51 seconds

Sam, I know it’s only been two games so far, but in the post Lane Keif and Charlie Weiss offense, have you what have you noticed is is different that Miss is doing on that side of the ball?

1:13:02

1 hour, 13 minutes, 2 seconds

Yeah, I’ll tell you the the biggest thing I noticed that really sticks out to me is actually this is maybe not an exact answer to your question, but you

1:13:10

1 hour, 13 minutes, 10 seconds

know, um Miss played on on Sunday in week one, so I had a chance to watch the Clemson game for y’all. And what I what

1:13:18

1 hour, 13 minutes, 18 seconds

I’ve noticed the most is that that offense, the yellow and gold offense, looks so similar to what the guys in

1:13:26

1 hour, 13 minutes, 26 seconds

blue and white were doing that I watch every year. It was like they swapped jerseys. So, I’ve been really impressed with how much Lane has been able and

1:13:33

1 hour, 13 minutes, 33 seconds

Charlie, who’s a big part of that, has been able to carry over into that. Um, Old Miss also looks similar, but I don’t

1:13:41

1 hour, 13 minutes, 41 seconds

know, and you know, I’m I’m not an exclusive expert, but from from my vantage point, I would say that if I had to pick which of the two offenses kind

1:13:50

1 hour, 13 minutes, 50 seconds

of feels more similar, and you can even identify some of the same plays, um, is kind of been the LSU offense. Duce Alexander receiver we talked to today

1:13:59

1 hour, 13 minutes, 59 seconds

said that he mentioned yeah like I was watching the the Clemson game and he’s like I I recognized their plays on the goal line. I knew exactly what the

1:14:06

1 hour, 14 minutes, 6 seconds

motions were and where guys were going to run and stuff. So um I I think it will be the type of deal where you kind of have two clones of each other going at the field on the offense.

1:14:17

1 hour, 14 minutes, 17 seconds

Is John David Baker the new offensive coordinator at Old Miss. Is he is he kind of feeling his way or is he uh cuz the numbers aren’t there yet for for Miss’s offense?

1:14:28

1 hour, 14 minutes, 28 seconds

Yeah. Yeah, it hasn’t been totally smooth. They they’ve had some turnovers and stuff. And the the tricky thing about Charlotte is Charlotte ran the

1:14:35

1 hour, 14 minutes, 35 seconds

ball so much that they actually did have possession a lot and that clock was running so there just weren’t a lot of possessions to truly run up the score um

1:14:44

1 hour, 14 minutes, 44 seconds

in that second week. Um but yeah, you know, he he’s he hasn’t been perfect, but I think it has been um the look that

1:14:51

1 hour, 14 minutes, 51 seconds

especially once he settles in, you know, it has everything you want for with uh getting trained out out in space and getting Kiwan rushing lanes and playing

1:14:59

1 hour, 14 minutes, 59 seconds

up tempo. It does look um very familiar to to what I saw last year.

1:15:03

1 hour, 15 minutes, 3 seconds

Sam, should be a lot of fun Saturday night. Hopefully everyone behaves as you’re right. Uh hopefully it doesn’t take one idiot to make something do

1:15:11

1 hour, 15 minutes, 11 seconds

something stupid that really reflects poorly on everyone that’s really looking forward to a good football game on Saturday night. We appreciate your time

1:15:18

1 hour, 15 minutes, 18 seconds

and appreciate your time over the last few weeks here breaking down this matchup.

1:15:24

1 hour, 15 minutes, 24 seconds

Sure thing, guys. You our universities, the schools we cover are connected at the hip for at least one more week. So [laughter] maybe at this rate they’ll

1:15:32

1 hour, 15 minutes, 32 seconds

wind up in Atlanta against each other, you know, at this rate. And I was thinking when uh I think you when I was driving over here from the uh the the

1:15:40

1 hour, 15 minutes, 40 seconds

dark Baton Rouge library. [laughter] Uh I I was I was thinking in my head, well, what if these two teams met again in the playoffs? I think that’d be

1:15:48

1 hour, 15 minutes, 48 seconds

pretty cool if then if the game you imagine.

1:15:50

1 hour, 15 minutes, 50 seconds

Yeah. Yeah, that would be it’d be fun to have the second one at Death Valley.

1:15:54

1 hour, 15 minutes, 54 seconds

That’s what I was going to say. Yeah, that would be cool if the second one was in Tiger Stadium. Hey Sam, thanks a lot.

1:15:59

1 hour, 15 minutes, 59 seconds

Appreciate it. Uh good luck with your coverage this week. Uh this is this is why we’re all in the business, right? We we love covering big games. So, you have a great week.

1:16:08

1 hour, 16 minutes, 8 seconds

No doubt.

1:16:09

1 hour, 16 minutes, 9 seconds

All right, Sam Hutchkins with Aquarian Ledger. All right, we’ll take a break.

1:16:12

1 hour, 16 minutes, 12 seconds

We got a couple more segments left in Tiger Rag Radio. It’ll be me, Glenn, and Case the rest of the way. So, stay tuned for that.

1:16:19

1 hour, 16 minutes, 19 seconds

Now, back to Tiger Rag Radio.

1:16:23

1 hour, 16 minutes, 23 seconds

All right, back here on Tiger Rag Radio, Jeff Polmo, along with the editor for Tiger Rag magazine, Gwen Gilbo, and our producer, Case Kishnik. Let’s hit of a

1:16:31

1 hour, 16 minutes, 31 seconds

couple of uh topics here. How concerned are you with the offensive line, Glenn?

1:16:37

1 hour, 16 minutes, 37 seconds

Yeah, I I am concerned with the offensive line. I was a little surprised that that they had trouble running up the middle on several occasions in the

1:16:45

1 hour, 16 minutes, 45 seconds

uh in the first half. Um, you know, that that’s got to be fixed. And and Lane also mentioned that the guards did not

1:16:52

1 hour, 16 minutes, 52 seconds

play well the previous week. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if you see either a a change in the starting lineup or a change in the uh in the rotation.

1:17:02

1 hour, 17 minutes, 2 seconds

um because you know he had to he had to finesse uh to to score more points in the in the second half and uh you know that that’s not good if you’re already

1:17:11

1 hour, 17 minutes, 11 seconds

doing that before you played an SEC game. But Lane’s an excellent offensive coach. So is Charlie Weiss Junior. So I

1:17:18

1 hour, 17 minutes, 18 seconds

think they’ll get it figured out. Um I think the um LSU’s defense is is probably going to win the game though.

1:17:26

1 hour, 17 minutes, 26 seconds

Uh what Derry Beckwith said really impressed me when he said like everybody’s kind of doing their job and staying in their spot. A guy that um an old friend of mine said the same thing.

1:17:38

1 hour, 17 minutes, 38 seconds

He he didn’t play in college but he played in high school football. He said and he watches LSU all the time.

1:17:43

1 hour, 17 minutes, 43 seconds

There were no gaping holes in the middle of the field like there were last year and the year before quite often. Just no blown coverages and no wide open spaces.

1:17:53

1 hour, 17 minutes, 53 seconds

I’ve noticed that in in both games. you got your guys in the right spot and they’re and they’re really fast. So, I have confidence that the defense is

1:18:02

1 hour, 18 minutes, 2 seconds

going to make up for whatever ills LSU’s offense may have against Pete Golding, who’s a really good defensive coordinator. He’s still calling the plays and he knows Lane Keifin.

1:18:13

1 hour, 18 minutes, 13 seconds

Yeah. I think the thing that stuck out with me with Derry that the fact that everyone’s doing their role is is certainly significant.

1:18:21

1 hour, 18 minutes, 21 seconds

He said it and you’ve seen it here in the first two games of the season. The speed just jumps out at you when you

1:18:29

1 hour, 18 minutes, 29 seconds

watch it. Th this is a fast defense. And last year, and really, as we talked about earlier in the show, LSU’s had its

1:18:37

1 hour, 18 minutes, 37 seconds

issues trying to handle these mobile quarterbacks, but I believe they now have the speed to potentially counteract

1:18:44

1 hour, 18 minutes, 44 seconds

that. Now, Trinidad Chamblas is going to make his plays because he’s an outstanding quarterback. He might be the best quarterback in all of college

1:18:53

1 hour, 18 minutes, 53 seconds

football and he’s got some good receivers and he’s got an outstanding running back and Kiwan Lacy where you can get some balance. So they’re they’re going to have some success against LSU.

1:19:04

1 hour, 19 minutes, 4 seconds

But I don’t think it’s going to be just a night of complete frustration for LSU fans saying, “Man, they just can’t get

1:19:12

1 hour, 19 minutes, 12 seconds

Trinidad Chamblas down. They just can’t or they they’re not doing anything to impact him.” I think they can make it frustrating for him at times.

1:19:21

1 hour, 19 minutes, 21 seconds

And I think kind of what’s become almost the the unsung hero of the defense, which was originally probably your biggest question coming into the season,

1:19:30

1 hour, 19 minutes, 30 seconds

is that interior defensive line, has kind of been the MVP of the season so far. I mean, the opposing offenses,

1:19:37

1 hour, 19 minutes, 37 seconds

LSU’s defense has been so dominant largely because they can’t do anything past the line of scrimmage. You haven’t even seen the Tigers secondary really

1:19:45

1 hour, 19 minutes, 45 seconds

get tested all that much because the quarterbacks just don’t have time to get rid of the ball. They can’t start anything with their offense because it just gets blown up immediately. And

1:19:53

1 hour, 19 minutes, 53 seconds

that’s the linebackers, the edge rushers, the whole front seven, but really that defensive interior was a place that a lot of Tiger fans had concerns coming into the season and you

1:20:01

1 hour, 20 minutes, 1 second

haven’t seen them get gashed like you thought they might.

1:20:04

1 hour, 20 minutes, 4 seconds

Very impressed with Duce Gerald’s. I had my reservations because he’s not the biggest guy, right? He he’s not he’s not a space eater out there and he’s a true

1:20:13

1 hour, 20 minutes, 13 seconds

freshman. So you’re wondering what the impact will be and granted it was no disrespect to your alma moer case but it was just Louisiana Tech but still he had

1:20:22

1 hour, 20 minutes, 22 seconds

a fantastic game. I mean he was in the back field he was causing issues. Let’s see what he could do now against an old

1:20:29

1 hour, 20 minutes, 29 seconds

miss team. Uh because the the freshman were quiet against Clemson. So let’s see what happens this time around against Miss. Yeah, and I thought it was funny

1:20:37

1 hour, 20 minutes, 37 seconds

last week, Tamarcus Culie was talking about how he didn’t make any tackles. He didn’t have any chances to like you were just saying, Case, you know, cuz uh the

1:20:46

1 hour, 20 minutes, 46 seconds

third line of defense wasn’t needed in the in the run game and they weren’t able to throw deep. But I think the Tamarcus and the rest of the secondary

1:20:55

1 hour, 20 minutes, 55 seconds

is going to get tested pretty good this week by uh by Trinidad and uh Old Miss’s offense. But um it’s it’s going to be a

1:21:02

1 hour, 21 minutes, 2 seconds

heck of a game. There’s no question about it. I think I think LSU has a has a good advantage, but you know, sometimes it comes down to who has the

1:21:10

1 hour, 21 minutes, 10 seconds

better quarterback and and I think Sam Lev is really good, but I think Trinidad is is uh better right now. Plus, he’s

1:21:19

1 hour, 21 minutes, 19 seconds

been in the SEC for a whole season. You know, Sam hasn’t been in the SEC yet.

1:21:24

1 hour, 21 minutes, 24 seconds

Trinidad could be the difference maker in this game. He could be. He He certainly could. Let’s take our final break and then we’ll wrap things up here with Tiger Rag Radio. So, stay tuned.

1:21:33

1 hour, 21 minutes, 33 seconds

Let’s go. We now return to Tiger Rag Radio.

1:21:38

1 hour, 21 minutes, 38 seconds

All right, we wrap it up here. Final segment. Sam Levitz, uh, how concerned are you with the three interceptions last week, Glenn?

1:21:46

1 hour, 21 minutes, 46 seconds

I I don’t think you’re going to see that again. I I I think that was um maybe a one-time thing from him. He had a he had

1:21:53

1 hour, 21 minutes, 53 seconds

a bad night. I think uh it was it was a little fluky at times. You know, the receivers may have been more involved than you think.

1:22:03

1 hour, 22 minutes, 3 seconds

But, uh, it was it was it was surprising to see, but I I don’t I don’t think you’re going to see it again. Case,

1:22:11

1 hour, 22 minutes, 11 seconds

yeah, I think it was, um, I don’t want to call it a one-off, but I, you know, Sam and Lane both kind of alluded to the

1:22:18

1 hour, 22 minutes, 18 seconds

idea that it’s not entirely Sam Levit’s fault. You know, the the pick with Jackson Harris was kind of a a mist time. He said they just need to run that

1:22:26

1 hour, 22 minutes, 26 seconds

route more and get more chemistry with that which we’ve kind of pointed out coming into the season was a concern after he came back in the summer and just you don’t have that much time to

1:22:34

1 hour, 22 minutes, 34 seconds

build chemistry with the receivers. Um but I think one receiver he has built chemistry with and you can see that is TDZ Green and I think he’s going to have

1:22:42

1 hour, 22 minutes, 42 seconds

a really big night in Oxford this weekend.

1:22:44

1 hour, 22 minutes, 44 seconds

He Sam does need to work on his accuracy though. He’s he’s missed quite a few passes in each game. That’s the thing he

1:22:51

1 hour, 22 minutes, 51 seconds

needs to really work on. He has faced three SEC defenses in his career and he has not put up good numbers in any of those games. Twice against Mississippi

1:22:59

1 hour, 22 minutes, 59 seconds

State, once against Texas. Now, different story. He’s got better talent around him, better wide receivers, better play caller. Uh he’s more mature,

1:23:08

1 hour, 23 minutes, 8 seconds

so maybe that all changes come Saturday night. Uh predictions, guys. What do you think?

1:23:13

1 hour, 23 minutes, 13 seconds

I’m going to say LSU I think I think the game’s going to be a little more low scoring than people think. I’m going to say LSU 20, Miss 17. That’s a good prediction. What about you, Case?

1:23:23

1 hour, 23 minutes, 23 seconds

Oh, I think I’d go a little bit more than that. Uh although I do think both teams will struggle to settle into the game and I’d go LSU 28, Miss 24.

1:23:32

1 hour, 23 minutes, 32 seconds

That’s a good prediction, too. I I like LSU. Slim slim margin probably somewhere around more closer to where Case upper

1:23:40

1 hour, 23 minutes, 40 seconds

20s. I I think these are two teams that got pretty good offenses or really good offenses, great or good quarterbacks, great quarterback and Trinidad Chambers.

1:23:49

1 hour, 23 minutes, 49 seconds

Should be fun to see. That does it for this. Uh, well, we got to have somebody pick old miss. Let’s just say Todd Todd. Todd picked Todd picked miss.

1:23:56

1 hour, 23 minutes, 56 seconds

He told me 317 and when I left the library.

1:23:58

1 hour, 23 minutes, 58 seconds

That’s right. I heard that, [laughter] too. I heard that, too. Todd Horn picks old miss. You heard it here. All right, that does it for Tiger Radio.
