LSU Football Season Opener: Tight End Trey’Dez Green Is “Just Ready To Go And Kill Clemson”

There is a lot going on around LSU at the moment with the national spotlight on an eligibility lawsuit in downtown Baton Rouge on Thursday.

And Lane Kiffin makes his debut as LSU’s head coach in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night as the No. 11 Tigers host No. 23 Clemson at 6:30 p.m. on ABC.

But pre-season All-American tight end Trey’Dez Green is trying to keep everything quiet before the explosion of sights and sounds come Saturday night.

“I’ve been keeping my feet on the ground,” the junior from Zachary High outside Baton Rouge said this week. “I’ve been off social media. I’ve been in the back in the shadows, been focused and just ready to go and kill Clemson this Saturday.”

Figuratively, of course. But LSU is a 10-point favorite to win regardless of what happens in a Baton Rouge courtroom concerning NFL portal transfer tight end Dae’ Quan Wright, who played for Kiffin last season at Ole Miss and is now practicing with the Tigers.

“We should have a lot of fun this Saturday,” Green said. “I love when the stakes are high. I feel like I thrive better.”

Green caught 33 passes for 433 yards and seven touchdowns last season on an offense greatly hampered by injured quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who played on with a painful abdomen tear that impacted his accuracy.

Kiffin and new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. have a much more advanced attack than anything former offensive coordinator Joe Sloan and former head coach Brian Kelly ever had, even when Nussmeier was healthy. They also have a new quarterback in Sam Leavitt, the top prospect in the portal last January when the transferred to LSU from Arizona State.

“It’s going to be exciting,” Green said of the redshirt junior signal caller. “He’s a wonderful player, wonderful leader, and I’m just happy to call him my quarterback.”

The offensive strategies and knowledge displayed by Kiffin and Weis, though, have really blown away Green.

“Indescribable,” Green said of the Kiffin-Weis offense. “They’re geniuses. Stuff is just so open. They’ve taught me so much that I didn’t know about football. And I’m learning even the defense coverages, the different techniques with the ends and the fronts that the defensive line plays in. I’m just so appreciative of those guys (Kiffin and Weis). I love them – how they’ve accepted me. I feel so comfortable and so prepared going out there Saturday and showcasing everything.”

Green said to be ready for an extremely quick attack.

“At first it was difficult and different,” he said of the early practices last spring. “You had to be in a ton of shape to play in this offense because of the up tempo. This is the fastest offense in the country. But I feel so comfortable now.”
