Not only did former LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte lose a large bet he made on the LSU-Florida State football game on Sept. 4, 2022, in the Louisiana Superdome.
He also got caught betting on himself.
Boutte, who is now in his fourth year with the New England Patriots after they drafted him in the sixth round in 2023, bet on his yardage and touchdown totals.
He caught all of two passes for 20 yards in a 24-23 loss, coming out far under.
“He bet on himself to hit his overs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, police discovered,” Baton Rouge Advocate sports writer Reed Darcy said on Tiger Rag Radio Tuesday night. “So, that bet didn’t hit.”

Most of Boutte’s bets missed.
“In total, he lost probably $80,000 to $90,000,” said Darcy, whose detailed feature on Boutte appeared in the Baton Rouge Advocate last Monday.

“He acknowledges now that he had a really serious problem,” Darcy said.
Darcy said there are comparisons to former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, whom LSU tried to sign last January out of the transfer portal before he chose Texas Tech. Because of evidence of his gambling addiction, Sorsby was banned from college football and a supplemental draft for the 2026 season. He is not eligible for the draft until 2027.
Boutte’s gambling addiction did not come to light until he was already in the NFL. He was charged with felony computer fraud and a misdemeanor for gaming while under age 21. The charges were dropped when he entered a gambling awareness program. He caught 78 passes for 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns last season with the Patriots and caught 43 passes for 589 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 after playing sparingly as a rookie in 2023.
At LSU, Boutte, now 24, caught 131 passes for 1,781 yards and 16 touchdowns from 2020-22.
“He’s really come a long way,” Darcy said.
