Danny Etling drafted by New England Patriots in the seventh round

Danny Etling will compete for the chance to back up Tom Brady.

The New England Patriots selected the LSU quarterback with the first pick of the seventh round in Saturday’s NFL Draft. Etling is the sixth Tiger off the board at No. 219 overall.

Etling, a surprise invite to the NFL Combine, wasn’t widely expected to be drafted at all by most analysts. Now he’ll join a quarterback room that includes Brady and Brian Hoyer.

The Purdue transfer took over as LSU’s starting quarterback two games into last season. He went 16-7 as a starter and threw 16 touchdowns against just two interceptions last season.

It’s not often that an LSU quarterback gets selected in the NFL Draft. Etling is only the second Tiger taken since 2008, joining Zach Mettenberger, who was drafted in 2014.

Now all Etling has to do is do his job, as the Patriot Way mandates.
