FOOTBALL: Spring Practice Report - Wed. March 12
The LSU Tigers were back outside in shells for practice Wednesday afternoon.
There were two players missing from practice. Jared Mitchell will be playing in the baseball game tonight. Will Blackwell was absent for the second consecutive practice. Despite rumors of his possible return to practice today, Ryan Perrilloux was also not out there in the time the media was allowed to watch. Ricky Jean Francois was at practice again today and appears to possibly be done with track. Brett Helms was at practice and dressed out but skipped a few drills.

Charles Alexander was again at practice without pads. He did not participate in a drill that involved the entire defense sprinting to the ball carrier and breaking down on the sideline. Coach Miles did say earlier this week that he looks for Alexander to possibly start increasing his workouts and participation after spring break next week.
There was a lot of talking and coaching going on at most of the different positions, so I tried to spend more time watching the quarterbacks throw today.
They started off throwing skinny posts to the receivers. Andrew Hatch threw to the left side, which was Brandon Lafell, Terrance Toliver, and RJ Jackson. Jarrett Lee threw to the right side, which was Demetrius Byrd, Ricky Dixon, and Chris Mitchell. Both threw well behind the receiver on the first rep. Hatch was behind his receiver on the second rep as well. After this Coach Crowton told the receivers they were running to deep and needed to flatten their routes more, and once this adjustment was made both Lee and Hatch looked much more comfortable and in sync with the receivers.
Based on the little the media is allowed to see, Jarrett Lee appears to be well ahead of Andrew Hatch at this time. Lee has better mechanics, better footwork, a quicker release, a stronger and more accurate arm, and throws a better ball. Hatch probably has Lee on experience just because he got more reps last season.
Class of 2008 signees Matt Branch and Clay Spencer were both at today’s practice.
Tomorrow the Tigers will hold their 2nd scrimmage of the spring. The media will not be allowed to watch the scrimmage but we will have a report on Coach Miles post-scrimmage press conference tomorrow evening.
