Coach Les Miles and LSU added yet another in-state product as Central High School safety Josh Johns informed the LSU coaches on Thursday afternoon he wanted to be a Tiger.
Johns earned Class 5A All-State honors while tallying 60 tackles and six interceptions. While standing at 6-foot-2, 210-pounds and running a 4.5 second 40-time it is unclear if Johns will serve as a safety or as a linebacker at the next level. It is also questionable as to whether Johns will be a member of the class of 2009 or will he be asked to gray-shirt until 2010.
What is not in question is Johns’ desire to be Tiger. Johns was quoted as saying, “It really just came to me always wanting to play at LSU,” Josh said. “It was always my dream and nothing could compare to that.”
Johns’ membership to the class of 2009 will be determined by the fate of the other prospects remaining open on the LSU recruiting board. If coach Miles adds the prospects he expects to add to this class then Johns will gray-shirt and his commitment will count towards the class of 2010.
Note: Gray-shirting - This is when a prospect signs his letter of intent in February, but does not enter college with his fellow class members in the fall. Instead, he usually waits until the following January. The bonus of a gray-shirt as compared to a red-shirt is the player is given a little more time to prepare for college. It is similar to a red-shirt, but a little delayed because his time in college does not begin to count until he becomes a full-time student.
