Like most kids growing up in America, Kevin Minter had a dream.
He wanted to be the best player on his high school team with hopes of his effort landing him a collegiate scholarship. The Peachtree High School product’s effort not only landed him a scholarship, but plenty of them. In fact, in the end Minter possessed so many offers that he was able to pick the university he wanted to attend instead of having to settle for just one.
However, having access to so many universities required thorough investigation and communication with various coaching staffs in order to select the perfect one. Luckily for Minter, he had a mentor on his side in his older brother, Murray Hollis. Together Hollis and Minter worked side-by-side in determining LSU was not only a good choice, but the best choice.
“He (Hollis) was a big influence on me,” Minter admitted. “He pretty much raised me when I was growing up, so if he didn’t like a school then I knew I probably wouldn’t like it either.”
During his senior campaign, Minter was usually too busy with school and football to keep up with recruiting or college football so Hollis’ feedback was vital to Minter’s recruitment.
“I think Kevin relied on me,” Hollis confirmed. “We would bounce stuff off of each other as far as what we were looking at in a school. We would really pay attention to the depth charts because we wanted to see what program gave him the best shot at early playing time. That was something that was very important to Kevin.
“The LSU coaches told us Kevin would have a legit shot at playing right away,” Hollis continued. “We decided to check them out and we fell in love with LSU once we stepped on the campus.”
Minter gave his verbal pledge to coach Les Miles on April 5th and on Saturday Minter arrived in Baton Rouge for the start of his first semester at LSU. His dream officially became a reality.
“I’m in Baton Rouge,” Minter stated with excitement on Sunday evening. “Actually me, Russell (Shepard) and Drayton (Calhoun) are getting our books right now. We have class in the morning and I know I can’t be late!
“Yesterday we met with the tutors and some people from the study hall,” Minter added. “Russell and Drayton seem like cool guys and right now we’re just trying to get know each other better.”
Minter claimed his first football practice as a Tiger will take place this Wednesday and he could not think of a better place to be.
“Yes sir,” Minter answered when asked if he was still happy with his college decision. “No doubt, this is the best place for me.”
