As if playing against Dollarway High School on national television was not enough, now the Bastrop Rams are set to face 5-1 Evangel High School putting their 40 plus game win streak on the line.
TigerRag.com caught up with LSU commit Joshua Downs (6′3, 267, 4.9) to discuss the key to his team’s success.
“I’ve just been working hard,” Downs stated. “Everybody has to do their own job. I think this season the game (against Evangel) will have a little more hype to it than last year and this is my senior year.
“I really do not have a prediction for the game,” Downs added. “I know it’s going to be a fast and physical game. I think our preparation is what keeps us focused and also knowing we have bullets on our backs every time we play.”
Downs will probably be facing bigger bullets when he advances to the next level as every team attempts to knock off the national champions or a team with the caliber of LSU. Downs claims no matter the number of bullet-holes the Tigers suffer this season that will not alter his decision.
“I didn’t get a chance to see the Florida vs. LSU game, but I heard about it,” Downs admitted. “I honestly did not think they’d lose. I thought it would be a tight game, but then LSU would find a way to pull it out.
“Them losing the game didn’t change my mind about going to school there,” Downs continued. “I can’t say the same for other recruits because everyone thinks differently, but it doesn’t make sense to me to let the outcome of a game change your decision. You should go to a school for its academics and its football program.”
Note: Last season Bastrop defeated Evangel 41-20.
