It is not everyday a team faces an opponent that has won 82-straight games. However, if the challenge ever would arrive the opposing team better come prepared. Tupelo High School is off to a solid 5-1 start and they are looking to use their next match-up against South Panola High School as a measuring stick.
Tupelo’s quarterback and LSU commit Chris Garrett is fully aware of the Tigers’ most recent five state championships as well as its 82-game winning streak. The 6-foot-4, 222-pound gunslinger also understands as many eyes may be set on him as his opponents’ recent success.
“I think we have a good chance at winning this weekend,” Garrett claimed. “We’re just taking it as another game. I know a lot of people are hyping it up though.
“And I know some people are going to look at this game and see how I perform,” Garrett continued. “It’s a team game though. People are looking at me like I’ll be the only one out there performing.”
The rapid-fire quarterback recently broke his school’s all-time competitions record for a career. Those stats may look nice on paper, but Garrett is confident it will take more than that for his team to shock the nation on Friday night.
“I know South Panola won like 80-something games in a row,” Garrett stated. “And I know they’re ranked number ten in the country and they run the ball well and have a really good defense.
“I think it would be one hell of an accomplishment for my team if we could come out of this game with a win,” Garrett added. “The thing is, we know we can beat them.”
Garrett hopes his Tupelo squad can perform better than his LSU team did in Gainesville over this past weekend.
“I was over at a friends’ house and we watched the game,” Garrett informed. “It wasn’t too good. (Jarrett) Lee and (Andrew) Hatch are still learning and people need to realize that.
“I think they’ve both done a tremendous job so far this year in handling all of the pressure that has been put on them,” Garrett continued. “People need to give them a break. I mean they went into the Swamp for the first time ever playing at 7 o’clock at night. I’m looking forward to seeing them bounce back this weekend against South Carolina.”
Garrett is not as big of a recruiting guru as his future teammate Russell Shepard, but Garrett believes suffering a loss like that does not necessarily always create a negative impact.
“I think the LSU loss should create a positive impact on recruiting,” Garrett admitted. “It should show the recruits that there is a good chance they could come in a get early playing time especially if they’re confident they could do a better job.”
