It is well known the LSU coaching staff is strongly pursuing Clemson commit Craig Loston. What is not mentioned nearly as much is LSU’s pursuit of arguably the other best safety in the country. Ironically, he is also a Clemson commit.
TigerRag.com caught up with 5-star prospect Devonte Holloman (6′2, 215, 4.5) for an update.
The South Pointe High School (SC) product committed to the Clemson Tigers in May of this year. Since then coach Tommy Bowden and his team have not lived up to their hype on the field this season and it may end up costing them in the recruiting game.
“I’m kind of scared about the coaching situation at Clemson,” Holloman stated on re-opening his recruiting file. “I’m not sure what coach is going to be there when I get there.”
Does he really believe Clemson would fire coach Bowden?
“I don’t know,” Holloman answered. “With a 3-3 start I really don’t know.”
With that said one of the other schools (LSU and Tennessee) Holloman is considering was just embarrassed by the Florida Gators on national television on Saturday night. What effect, if any, does he feel that kind of loss will have on LSU’s recruiting of himself and other prospects.
“I watched that game and I was expecting LSU to do better,” Holloman replied. “LSU is still a good school though and they’re always going to have talent. The effect the loss will have on recruiting just depends I guess.
“You never want to see a team you’re considering lose, but that is expected in the SEC,” Holloman continued. “Every game is always a tough game in the SEC.”
Holloman is the No. 6 ranked safety in the nation by Rivals.com and is No. 20 on ESPN.com’s Top 150. He is scheduled to take an official visit to Baton Rouge for LSU’s showdown with Georgia in two weeks. Before that visit Holloman will be taking a sneak peak at the Tigers as he will be in attendance for the LSU vs. South Carolina game this weekend.
“I’m going to the LSU/South Carolina game this weekend,” Holloman stated. “I expect to see a different LSU team and a hungry South Carolina team. I don’t know who is going to win. I can’t predict a score on that one. I just know it’s going to come down to the wire.”
Although Holloman was unable to predict a score, he was able to give a time-line on his final decision.
“I’m taking a trip to LSU to see what coach [Doug] Mallory and [Les] Miles are like,” Holloman explained. “I also want to see what LSU is about and if it would be a good fit for me.
“I know I will have to make my final decision soon because I plan on graduating and enrolling early,” Holloman concluded. “I’ll have my decision if I see a change in Clemson or if I feel the other school is a better fit.”
