It looks as if the Tigers should finish in the top five in recruiting for this year’s class, but one position the LSU staff would like to secure is at safety.
Craig Loston is atop of the Tigers’ wish list with a few other propsects close behind. One of the names in the mix is Darren Myles Jr. (6-2, 180, 4.5).
TigerRag.com caught up with the four-star safety for an update.
“School has been going good,” Myles expressed. “I’m used to the routine now, but it is still and has always been my first priority.
“Our season on the other hand started off a little rough,” Myles continued. “But, individually I think I’ve done OK. It’s kind of hard to say because no one has really thrown my way. I guess I’ve earned their respect.”
Technically someone has been throwing his way as he plays receiver for his Carver High School (Ga.) squad as well.
“I’ve also played a little offense this year,” Myles informed. I played quarterback and receiver. I lead my team in receiving yards and I’m the third leading rusher behind our two running backs.”
Myles’ ball-handling skills are so potent that some college coaches have actually approached the gifted Myles with an offer to play on offense at the next level.
“I prefer to play on defense, but some schools are looking at me as an offensive player,” Myles claimed. “They like me on offense because I bring the same aggressiveness with me to that side of the ball. I play the same as I do on defense. I get physical when I get the ball in my hands.”
However, LSU is not one of those schools. Coach Les Miles and his staff know where they would like to see Myles.
“I talk to coach Miles at least once a week,” Myles admitted. “He basically just reminds me that he wants me to be a part of their defense and a part of their team. He said he was ready to accept my commitment.
“And I told him he’ll find out on January 4th,” Myles said with a laugh.
LSU is one of many schools that will have to wait until January to discover if their recruiting class of 2009 will contain Myles’ signature.
“Recruiting has been picking up,” Myles stated. “It seems like I’m hearing from every school. Sometimes I get back-to-back phone calls from different schools. And sometimes I get calls from different schools at the same time. I’m hearing from everybody.
“I enjoy it though,” Myles concluded. “It shows me how blessed I really am and I’m grateful for it.”
