LSU QB coach talks future under center with TR Radio

Tiger Rag Staff Report

With the start of spring football just over two weeks away, LSU quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe joined Jeff Palermo and Ben Love on Tiger Rag Radio Tuesday night.

Before Kragthorpe spoke about the future of LSU’s quarterback position, Jeff and Ben asked him to comment on what went wrong in the BCS Title Game as well as the statements made by departing offensive players.

“I think everybody’s disappointed,” Kragthorpe leveled. “I don’t think there’s anybody in that building that isn’t disappointed at the outcome of that game. It was a bad night. That’s about all we can say. It’s a night that we want to not forget because we want to get back to that game, but it’s a night that was very difficult for everybody … We’re disappointed that we didn’t play better in the game, so we want to get back to it and win it. No doubt.”

Moving forward, the Zach Mettenberger era is set to begin this fall, and Kragthorpe went into detail regarding what he’s expecting out of the Tigers’ next starting quarterback before he laces it up versus North Texas Sept. 1.

Behind him on the depth chart will be redshirt freshmen Stephen Rivers and Jerrard Randall as well as true freshman Jeremy Liggins. Kragthorpe previewed the competition for the backup spot between the trio, and he told us why the staff liked what the big, Mississippi native brought to the table in high school.

“Jeremy’s a big, strong physical player,” acknowledged Kragthorpe. “He’s a guy that can really throw the ball down the field. Had him at our camp, which is obviously a great evaluation tool for us, and we’re impressed with his physical attributes, his skill set. He comes from a winning program. He’s won 32 straight games and a starting quarterback, two state championships, so that’s pretty impressive when you’ve got a guy who led his team to 16 wins and a state championship back to back.”

I am very concerned about the role this offensive coaching situation had on the debacle in New Orleans; and whether it will hold us back in the future. Is Stud really an offensive coordinator? When Kragthorpe stepped down from that role, did he retain any of the duties of putting together a gameplan? Does Les Miles do it? It seems the gameplans were pretty simple and worked GREAT all year (just pound people’s face off)…but when faced with a situation that required something more imaginative, we had NOTHING. I love Miles for his loyalty to his coaches and their families; and I think that loyalty adds to the overall stability of our program. And who could dump on a man like Krag and his family when they are faced with the disease and all that goes with it? But does this mean we are resigned to having no real talented offensive coordinator to lead LSU’s offense? For how long?

It is an injustice for the “gag rule” to prevail when a coach or player talks to the press. We, the fans, deserve a full explanation of why we looked as if we had no preparation. We also looked as if we had no coaches running the game plan.

For Les Miles to say that “I would like to think that our coaches had our guys prepared for Alabama,” and leave it al that, is a total disgrace to the coaches, the team, and the fans. Just Les saying at the press conference that “it is all over and we are now moving forward,” does not put this subject to rest.

We, the fans, deserve more than the University has told us. We are still waiting!

I agree that we need to move on. What’s past is past. Learn from our mistakes and improve.

That total losing battle of LSU to Alabama in the BCS Championship game this past Jan 9th does not need to be the battle that lost the war for the LSU tigers. Like Napoleons Waterloo & Robert E Lees Gettysburg. No, Les Miles still has a football program that is developed enough with the right players at the right place LSU at the right time to do something about it.
I was never more disappointed with a head football coach that I was supporting, in all of my life.

The way the LSU offense could not function with some of the very best football players simply gave me one of the worst bad turns that I ever had. Any head coach worth his salt should have been able to at lease past the 50 yard line for a FG attempt. That never happened and we all simply lost the game and died a little along with the hopes and dreams of our brave LSU football players. Les Miles still has the right college football players that can makeup for that bitter memory.

He also still has the highly spirited LSU football fans willing to help him succeed. It is also very much up to him to lead us into that final LSU victory. These LSU fans and players can get there again with the right leader.
I am more fired up then before for heaven sakes. I must feel like perhaps this LSU football team have a better chance this next time.

We the fans have a 13 win SEC Championship team and that is what we deserve. What happens in that locker room, should stay in that locker room, in spite of what Jefferson, Blackwell, Peteren and some fans think. Win as a team and lose as a team. Mile, the players and the university no more “owe” the fans an “explanation” than a fan, say Ben, owes Miles, the players and LSU, an explanation of what goes on between his family behind closed doors. We cannot go back and relive the game that we shall not speak of. Our guys performed in admirable fashion all year long. It is just unfortunate that the worst showing of the year came in the biggest game of the year.

I agree with Ben. Our head coach is paid a heck of a lot of money to feed the fans and media this hogwash about what went down that night. The defination of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.

Belly up to the bar Coach and tell us really what was going on. We can handle it and I know he can to especially considering all of the flack he took a couple of years ago…I too am still waiting and like alot of other fans will keep on bringing this up until we get an explanation.

David….no, “the past is the past” is not the right way to handle this. That is the cheap way out. We as fans as well as future signees need to know instead of all the numerous rumors flying around.

Spoiled LSU fans- Just because we pay him a lot of money does not assure victory all of the time. MILES IS A GOOD MAN, I am proud to have him represent our school and our state.

He has his faults but he is loyal and a stand up guy, unlike Nicky.

Got something to say?
