The LSU Tigers already have 13 commitments thus far in the 2009 recruiting class and 5-Star prospect Russell Shepard (6’2,185, 4.4) deserves much of the credit. TigerRag.com caught up with Shepard recently for an update on his relentless campaign to deliver LSU the top recruiting class for 2009.
“The summer has been going good so far,” Shepard expressed. “I took the first two weeks off to relax and to just be a kid and have some fun. And today is the last day of the first part of summer school for me. I got a nine-month course finished in six weeks. So now I’m going to have a ten day break until the second part of summer school starts up. It’s kind of different taking classes over the summer, but it’s going to be worth it in the end.
“On Tuesday I am going to start my workouts up again,” Shepard continued. “I’m going to wake up between 8:30a.m.-9:00a.m. and round up some of my teammates. Then we are all going to go hill climbing. We run up and down a hill with some back peddling that’s on a 45-degree incline. That usually lasts like 35-40 minutes and then we take a break for lunch. We’ll eat and then maybe take a nap or something.
“We meet up again around three o’clock at school and we work out as a team which will probably last from like 4:00p.m-6:00p.m, Shepard went on. “Then I’ll take the receivers outside and I’ll have them run some routes to work on their hand-eye coordination and stuff like that. We run every route and that will last until about 7:30p.m. That will pretty much be my daily workout routine until we start school again and our first game is on August 28th.”
Off of the practice field and outside of his studies, Shepard continues to press his future team (LSU) onto his fellow class of 2009 prospects. If there could be a Heisman trophy given out for recruiting, Shepard would undoubtedly be the front-runner.
“There is a big camp coming up for us (LSU) in July,” Shepard stated. “If you are being looked at by LSU then there is no doubt you will be receiving a phone call from me. I keep in touch with the LSU coaches and the guys they are recruiting all of the time.
“For example, the last few guys I’ve spoken to were Trent Richardson, Marlon Brown, Kraig Appleton, Xavier Nixon, Richard Wilson and Craig Loston,” Shepard added.
