Football scheduling czar talks Oregon addition, Arkansas shift

Many a decision on future Tiger football schedules is made at the desk of Verge Ausberry, pictured left.

Every week, Jeff Palermo and I do the Tiger Rag Radio Show live from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday nights. And pretty much every Wednesday - Friday that follows, I post audio clips from the best interviews from that week’s show.

All of them share timely, insightful information on LSU athletics from some of the most knowledgeable sources around, and, like you often hear parents say, we love them all equally.

Well, with all that said, today’s interview with Verge Ausberry, LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director who oversees football scheduling, is one every purple and gold fan needs to check out.

Ever wonder why LSU goes out and schedules the likes of Oregon or North Carolina to start a season instead of slating an eighth home game?

Or how about the reasons behind the Arkansas game bouncing back and forth from Friday to Saturday and back to Friday? Or why Mississippi State in 2011 is on a Thursday night?

Even something like how do series such as LSU-Oklahoma (coming to a stadium near you in 2018 and 2019) come to pass? Who calls whom? And how does that fit in with playing an-already rigorous SEC schedule?

For matters such as these, there’s no better authority than Ausberry, a former LSU linebacker from 1986-89.

In his chat with myself and Tiger Rag Radio co-host Jeff Palermo, the LSU athletic administrator is very candid on all of the subjects above, laying out in simple chapter and verse how these things happen and the motivations behind a wide array of scheduling moves.

Interviews such as this one with Ausberry and much more (this past week we also had LSU coaches Trent Johnson and Paul Mainieri as well as college/pro football analyst Mike Detillier and recruiting analyst Shea Dixon) can be heard weekly on Tiger Rag Radio.
